CL millions floating across Glasgow

363

Tonight, we see the conclusion of the first of two ties that don’t involve Celtic but have a significant bearing on our income and domestic competitive stance.  Union Saint-Gilloise take a 2-0 lead to Ibrox, a result that in earlier times brought an 80% success rate.  Without the away goals rule, the advantage is reduced, Union also lost heavily at the weekend.  Newco will be rightfully confident of progress.

Qualification for the Champions League play-off round is worth over £5m in prize and gate money.  Celtic stand to earn an extra £3m if Newco are eliminated at this round or the next; that money would otherwise float across Glasgow to become part of Newco’s European bounty.  More importantly, our casino-football addicted rivals would be denied expensive chips to place before the transfer window closes.  No apologies for watching CL qualification closely this year.

Just a year ago, Celtic were eliminated from the Champions League the second qualification round by Midtjylland.  The transformation between then and now could scarcely be imagined.  A year ago, it was significantly more unlikely for Newco to reach the Europa League final.  We cannot underestimate them, or the significance a Champions League windfall would have.

I said I hear it was dodgy pen.

I was told it was going out the park with no danger and the defender bizarrely stuck his hand up.

Maybe it was different I haven’t seen it.

    Well done Shamrock Rovers

  9. Tiny Tim, I didn’t ridicule you in fact I was very complimentary to you,

I said as I said last year, I have never met you, all that I heard about you was good but yes you are a pessimist.

I also said I’d give the Huns a 40/60 chance of beating the Belgians but I expect the winners of PSV/Monaco to beat them.

I still believe that, if I’m wrong I’m wrong.

Last year when you were wrong about League result, I didn’t slag you , I was just happy we won,

Have no idea where this outburst came from , I’m prepared to cut you some slack in that like myself you are disappointed with the result and felt the need to lash out.

  10. SPFL Trust Trophy

    Reigart Stadium, Coatbridge

    Tuesday, August 9, 2022

    ALBION ROVERS… 2

    (Fagan 1, Corr og 26)

    CELTIC… 3

    (Vata 32, Lawal 39, Moffat 50)

The Celtic B team produced a superb performance to beat League Two side, Albion Rovers in the first round of the SPFL Trust Trophy.

The Hoops came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, and the margin of victory could have been even higher, given Celtic’s dominance in the second-half.

The young Celtic side actually got off to the worst possible start against their League Two opponents when Albion Rovers captain, Sean Fagan, slotted the ball home inside the first minute.

And the home side came close minutes later, but a free-kick from the edge of the area was put over the bar.

However, the Hoops slowly began to work their way into the game, and Owen Moffat found Johnny Kenny in a dangerous area inside the box, but his effort was saved by the Rovers keeper.

And Celtic’s Irish striker had another chance soon after that after being set up by Rocco Vata, but this time the home defence blocked his shot.

Vata was causing the League two side problems on the flank, and he had a chance in the 21st minute following good play from Moffat but, again, goalkeeper Chris Smith dealt well with the effort.

And just five minutes later, the home side doubled their lead. Amaury Testa delivered a cross into the Celtic box which was unfortunately turned into his own net.

The young Hoops refused to let that second goal unsettle them, and Vata reduced the deficit on 32 minutes when he produced a good finish.

Tobi Oluyawemi saved well from a Charlie Reilly shot two minutes later, while Albion Rovers had another effort soon after that went wide of the post.

But on 39 minutes, it was 2-2 when Bosun Lawal converted a Moffat corner.

And that comeback drove Celtic on after the break, with Moffat smashing the ball home on 50 minutes after good play from Matthew Anderson, the Celtic captain cutting the ball back for the winger to score.

The Hoops were playing with confidence and Lawal had a shot from just outside the area which was saved by the Rovers keeper, while Johnny Kenny made a strong run down the left-hand side but his strike was also well-saved.

On 71 minutes, Celtic had another great chance as Moffat’s long-range effort flew just over the crossbar.

The home side had been on the back foot for much of the half but they pushed forward in the last 10 minutes. However, Oluwayemi dealt well with anything that came into his area and the Hoops saw out the match for an impressive and well-deserved 3-2 victory over their League Two opponents.

The victory sets up a home tie against Livingston B in the next round of the SPFL Trust Trophy while, before then, there is a Lowland League game away to Gretna this Saturday.

ALBION ROVERS: Smith, Fernie, Malcolm, McColl, Fagan, Leslie, Wilson, Duncan, Testa, Wright, Reilly.

Subs: Dolan, McGrath, Greenwood, Leighfield, Devine, Taylor

CELTIC: Oluwayemi, Murphy, Corr, Lawal, Anderson, Otoo, Letsosa, Summers (Davidson 68), Vata (Thomson 90+1), Moffat (Carse 74), Kenny.

Subs: Luyeye, Morrison, Mackenzie, Quinn, Kelly, Agbaire

  11. The returnof weeron on

    I have to say…well, I don’t have to say it, but I will….

Some odd chat on here about the other mob. This team or that team will knock them out of Europe some say. How many times was that said last season? I know that it is just wishful thinking, so don’t dress it up as some kind of thoughtful analysis.

Our rivals have a strong team. Many don’t want to admit it, and perhaps there are younger Celtic supporters who are not used seeing two strong teams duking it out. Don’t get me wrong, I hope that they lose every game this season and that we win all of our games. However, that won’t happen, and I would not be surprised if the league is another close run affair. I’ll go further and say that I would not be surprised if they go further in Europe than us. Again, it is not what I hope for, but they did negotiate around some decent teams in Europe last year.

And yes, TinyTim had every right to say that that he thought that derhun would win on aggregate. It was not an outrageous thing to say, and it was probably a more thoughtful comment than a great many I have read over the last few days.

    H.H.

  13. Loving all the chat about the support forming a circular firing squad and handing Hertz 2nd place — I fear it hasn’t been thought through.

If there is a large scale / successful season ticket boycott then the board will live of the surplus they are now always trying to generate and then they will play a waiting game.

From recent exploits the board will always have a star player or two wanting away — they are then sold with nobody to replace them — so they can survive a lack of season ticket cash.

Where are we now — season tickets / free pie seats = £30mill pa — paid in instalments.

Successful manager to take the heat of the board — but where would this all leave him?

Squad that is developing and getting better — let them stagnate?

    That dog don’t hunt.

Consequently it would be a Lent sized sacrifice that I think few would have the stomach for it — file under rent-a-gob nonsense.

There is a reason why Trots / Swingers / Ten bob rockets / amateur Oil traders don’t have the public support to be left in charge of a hamster.

  19. No surprise Sevco overturned the inexperienced Belgians at fortress Ibrox, it is a cauldron of hate, poison cascades from the stands as 50,000 anti-scots shame themselves waving union flags, if PSV wants to get through the qualifier how they cope at ipox will be key, our win in the league April this year was a huge step in going on to take the SPFL title.

  21. Democracy ? Just who will elect the most powerful politician in the UK ?

The Telegraph publishing a story in January stating that: “Individuals without the right to vote in a general election and potentially with no ties to Britain could be able to choose the next prime minister”.

New concerns are being raised online about the Conservative Party’s membership rules, as the party’s final two leadership candidates prepare to canvass members.

It has been highlighted that the Conservative Party does not require members to be UK citizens, nor for members to be registered to vote in this country.

Under the ‘frequently asked questions’ on the Conservative website, the party states that “Overseas residents are invited to join Conservatives Abroad and will be entitled to all the benefits of party membership. Your membership will be administered by Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association”.

On attempting to join the Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association, its website states explicitly that: “You do not have to be eligible to vote in the UK to join the Conservative Party or Conservatives Abroad”.

It only cites the fact that donors giving £500 or more to the party must be on the UK electoral register.

“As an overseas member, you are entitled to all the benefits of party membership, including participation in the Conservative Policy Forum, attendance at party conferences and a vote in the election of the party leader,” the website adds.

The terms and conditions of membership state that: “Application for membership of the Conservative Party is subject to review by the party and its constituency associations before final approval”.

However, minimal information is requested from prospective members (just a name, address and bank details). Given the party’s liberal rules on foreign membership, it, therefore, seems unlikely that someone would see their membership rejected on the grounds of nationality (Russian nationality, for example) – and there are seemingly few ways for the party to detect influence from malign foreign actors, given the lack of information requested.

Byline Times has approached the Conservative Party to ask what safeguards are in place to ensure that foreign actors are not able to join the party en masse, in an attempt to influence internal party processes – including a Conservative leadership election.

Individuals who have been members for at least three months immediately prior to the close of the leadership ballot are entitled to vote in the contest – meaning that only current members who joined on or before 3 June will receive a ballot, with a new party leader and Prime Minister set to be announced at the start of September.

However, the predicament of foreign party membership has been a concern for some time, with The Telegraph publishing a story in January stating that: “Individuals without the right to vote in a general election and potentially with no ties to Britain could be able to choose the next prime minister”.
