CL millions floating across Glasgow

363

Tonight, we see the conclusion of the first of two ties that don’t involve Celtic but have a significant bearing on our income and domestic competitive stance.  Union Saint-Gilloise take a 2-0 lead to Ibrox, a result that in earlier times brought an 80% success rate.  Without the away goals rule, the advantage is reduced, Union also lost heavily at the weekend.  Newco will be rightfully confident of progress.

Qualification for the Champions League play-off round is worth over £5m in prize and gate money.  Celtic stand to earn an extra £3m if Newco are eliminated at this round or the next; that money would otherwise float across Glasgow to become part of Newco’s European bounty.  More importantly, our casino-football addicted rivals would be denied expensive chips to place before the transfer window closes.  No apologies for watching CL qualification closely this year.

Just a year ago, Celtic were eliminated from the Champions League the second qualification round by Midtjylland.  The transformation between then and now could scarcely be imagined.  A year ago, it was significantly more unlikely for Newco to reach the Europa League final.  We cannot underestimate them, or the significance a Champions League windfall would have.

On Sunday Celtic face Kilmarnock, the team that was promoted from the Championship at the end of last season, yet DAVID66 is complaining about us being given “another hard game”.

Surely the much maligned fixture computer could have given us Albion Rovers this weekend.

    Paranoia gone mad.

  2. Former referee Des Roache believes Moritz Jenz should have received a second booking for his celebration after the Celtic defender netted in Saturday’s 3-1 at Ross County. (Express)

From BBC Scotland football gossip page.

Funny how old Des was eagle eyed with this but completely fails to mention the straight leg, studs up, attempted leg breaker on Greg Taylor?

It’s all part of that ‘see what the Old Firm get away with’ routine, while completely ignoring the reality of dozens of dodgy decisions going for Sevco, part of the old ‘they even themselves out over the season’ which of course they won’t and never have.

  3. What I noticed last night watching Sevco (i know),was a real lack of movement to assist the guy in possession ……compared to what we are currently watching….

  4. Mmm sometimes you just have to say what u think ..

On what we know there is little chance of the rotten mob getting past psv .

However look how that worked last year !

I don’t know If they are just naturally lucky in Europe or their belief some how causes the balances to change somehow .

I thought this out before saying it … there is as much chance in my opinion of sevco beating psv in next tie as there is of them stealing our title back this year ! On all known information what i say is certainly true but let’s hope any upsets in the balance of luck and fairness extend to only Europe!

    Have a great day !

  5. 5Live sports presenter finishes his report on sevco game by saying they play PSV at home next week, here’s Charlie Adams, “ sevco can’t afford to be two down at PSV next week.” You’ve got to laugh.

  6. Disappointment last night for us, can’t comment on the game because I don’t watch them that often. I think it’s to PSV’s advantage that the first leg is at Ibrox next week.

PSV probably favourites but no one would be surprised to see the huns make it.

I can see your point but I don`t think it is paranoia. Whether people care to admit it or not, the Media DOES have an effect on how we think. In Scotland, that means that many Celtic supporters are still nervous about nearly every game we play. Even, for example, if we had St Mirren at Home, we would know we are almost certain to win but then become worried that defeat could come when we least expect it!

FWIW I believe we will beat Killie but I will still feel nervous until all doubt has been removed. Such is life for this Celtic supporter:-)

PS We don`t necessarily need to read, watch or listen to the MSSM for it to have an influence. Others do and spread the `news` by word of mouth or via CQNet al.

  8. I dont give a rats ass how the media report on us, them, biases, favouritism etc etc etc.

They influence fluck all, they are to be laughed at and mocked.

Look how shite they are at doing it, they couldnt save their club, and now they tell lies to cover it up.

    It is what it is.

    Celtic are champions.

If you get it for daily news , watch the telly (any channel) radio (any station)it’s still the same pish …

For the crosswords ? Buy yourself a crossword solver book , loads of places sell them …

Football news ? Ask a hun neighbour , the views will roughly be the same…

You like a read with your morning coffee / tea break , get yourself a book loads of good Celtic ones available , go to the library . ( don’t read their copy , you’ll only be pulled in again )😂

Racing ? Don’t gamble , it’s bad 🙈 but if you have to , go to the bookies , you can read form and hear all the latest news/ gossip from other punters .

    Seriously ,don’t buy it

  11. I genuinely wish that some people would engage their brain before they start typing.

It’s getting to a stage where there is almost no point in coming on here. The stuff yesterday

about gaelic – jeezo is there not a gaelic quick news somewhere? or a political site that some of

us could go to. This is meant to be about Celtic and as far as I know we are all from the same stable

so could we try to give up the name calling and baiting please? Cue name calling and baiting…..

Think we need to focus on some facts, firstly the great European run. The huns played 21 games in Europe last year and won seven to reach a final. They climbed out a poor EL group on seven points.

The team they have just beaten lost their manager and have sold a good whack of last seasons players.

You’ll not read that in the Scottish media😕

    HOT SMOKED

I made no mention of the reasons behind some supporters’ paranoia.

I too will be nervous before Sunday’s game, as I will be before every leavue game. It’s all part of what makes us Celtic supporters.

My point was about a poster implying that facing the newly promoted team in our third league game of the season was a deliberate ploy to make it hard for us. If I wanted to make it as hard as possible for Celtic, I’d send them to Ibrox, Pittodrie, Tynecastle or Easter Road. Not Rugby Park.

What has all that got to do with how we are reported in the media?

  14. BOGNORBHOY on 10TH AUGUST 2022 10:51 AM

i haven’t bought a newspaper in years. I use BBC/RTE and newspapers send me links to stories on FB which i read if free and don’t if chargeable

The only thing i miss from papers was the music reviews/gig guides etc
