Clowns falsifying the Rules

423

As recently as December, Sky Sports contributor and very, very, lapsed Celtic fan, Neil McCann, accused John Guidetti of cheating while simultaneously acknowledging that the player didn’t claim for the penalty McCann thought he didn’t deserve. The mental contortions required to allow McCann to accuse a Celtic player of cheating, while not cheating, was worthy of awe.

Yesterday the same open sore was evident. Craig Gordon fouled Jackson Irvine 23 yards off his line, to the side of the field. Virgil van Dijk was back inside the six yard line with other Celtic players storming back.

McCann waxed lyrical that the Celtic goalkeeper should have been ordered off, claiming “The new rules are simple. Is the Ross County player being denied a goal scoring opportunity?”

He’s half right, the Rules of the Game are clear, they note three sending off offenses for fouls:

Serious foul play
Violent conduct
Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity

Referee guidance on the third offense is crystal clear; denying a possible goal scoring opportunity is not a sending off offense. Referees are only allowed to show the red card when an obvious opportunity has been denied.

Jackson Irvine could get an early shot off with his left foot (he’s right footed) but it would need to be a spectacular effort from a tight angle. The potential chance was never an obvious goal scoring opportunity. The yellow card decision was correct. These are the Rules of the Game and the guidance referees are given.

The only thing you need to know about yesterday is that if you have a career in the football media, and before you cite the Rules of the Game, you’d better read them. Otherwise you might appear to be a bitter clown who falsifies the rules to suit an agenda.

Extract from Phil’s interview with Jim Spence …… why are the bhuns allowed to behave like this, with impunity ….??

“Q: What was your low point at the ‘Beeb’?

    JS:

The now well-known farrago concerning a remark about Rangers during the old club, new club debate. I’d been tipped off by a source at Ibrox that John McLelland would be returning as chairman. I ran the story and a couple of nights later posed a question to two guests on Sportsound, which many other football fans in Scotland were asking.

Referring to the McLelland return I said “John McLelland who was chairman of the old club, some people will tell you the club, well the club that died, possibly coming back in terms of the new chairman”.

It wasn’t the most graceful effort at flowing prose, granted, but in a live unscripted radio discussion, that isn’t uncommon.

There were 400 complaints from Rangers fans that my comments were inaccurate and misleading and the BBC Trust became involved. The situation dragged on for a long while before they ruled that there had been no breach of editorial guidelines.

There was a sustained campaign of pretty vicious abuse on social media with threats directed at my family and myself. On one occasion I was verbally abused while out with my wife. I did offer that individual the opportunity to settle the issue in time honoured fashion, but his bark proved worse than his bite and he declined in a somewhat anxious state before making a hasty getaway. That probably summed up most of the keyboard warriors who were involved in the anonymous abuse.

The upside was the unbelievable support which I Received from fans of other clubs in Scotland.

A petition in support of me with over a thousand signatures was signed by supporters of other clubs and that was very welcome and heartening. In particular the Aberdeen fans were terrific in their backing with their ‘We are all Jim Spence’ banner, which they unveiled at an away game at Firhill and at BBC PQ in Glasgow. It was very welcome backing and to this day I’m greatly appreciative of the support of them and other fans in Scotland at a time which was pretty fraught. The aim of the campaign was intimidation and to get me sacked: They failed.

Q: You have stated, on more than one occasion on Twitter, that there was a campaign to have you sacked from the BBC. Can you explain that?

    JS:

As outlined above, I’m in no doubt that the aim was my removal from the BBC. It was an attempt to silence anyone who posed questions which some fans of Rangers did not want asked. Other Scottish journalists have been subjected to similar abuse. It has been and still is a blatant attempt to coerce and ultimately take journalists livelihoods away from them.

Q: How did you deal with that situation?

    JS:

I’d be a liar if I said it was easy. My wife wanted me to pack it in and I came very close. The biggest problem was that as a BBC employee I could not respond the way I wanted to. My hands were tied behind my back and that was enormously frustrating. Privately many folk in the industry sent me messages of support but given the threats and intimidation around at the time it would have been unwise and very dangerous to do so publicly.”

  4. Jimmynotpaul Mrs Hebcelt and I did the tour yesterday, absolutely fascinating. Like you had been meaning to do it for years, easily the best way to see any city. My favourite has been New York, great characters in that city. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  5. Interesting IV with Jim Spence on Phil’s site. Sad to see confirmed the intimidation practised by both the Ibrox clubs and their supporters. Also sad that people in the industry felt only able to offer private support, when they should have been shouting their outrage from the rooftops.

Pretty damning indictment of our wee country.

As for BBC resources… not sure why he says Scotland is considered a “region” rather than a “nation”. I don’t think such a distinction exists. In commissioning terms there are “nations and regions” quotas – ie a certain percentage of work must be sourced outside London. But in terms of in-house sports budgets I don’t think this distinction means anything.

Devolved broadcasting risks doing to the BBC what they’ve done to the Police. And independence would mean the end of the BBC anyway (clue is in the name).

Seems like a decent chap though. Good luck to him.

Re the new blog format : Personally I see no issues, and congratulations to all concerned for a professional new look. Any change will be initially resisted. As with life we must embrace change, even if its perceived to be outside our comfort zone.

A towering figure from the past once stated ” A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty”

  20. For BT Sport Pundits (sic) like Neil McCann and Ross County players and officials who DON’T know the rules, let’s clear up the decision not send Craig Gordon off. The FIFA Laws of the Game Law 12 – Fouls and Misconduct states that a player shall be sent off if he is guilty of “denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick”. Jackson Irvine was moving wide and AWAY from the Celtic goal, not towards it and it wasn’t an OBVIOUS goalscoring opportunity. Therefore the Ref was right to award a yellow card, not a red one.

  21. I’m not knowledgeable enough to comment on the technology involved in the new format but it certainly, for now at least, takes longer to ‘turn’ pages and navigate in general.

    Baws….

It maybe an interesting article but it is irrelevant as few will actually listen to what the man ACTUALLY says as most will be put off by his idiosyncratic style and appearance. Sad but that’s the modern world.

That’s why Mr C winning would be bad news for Labour and the few remaining Socialists whether red in tooth and claw or ‘lite’.

It’s not the stated message but the perception.
