Commons phenomenal contribution

737

You will remember times, not so long ago, when a successful Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in any competition, even against lower league opposition. Already this season we have achieved what until recently was regarded as beyond the club, won two games away from home without conceding.

Helsingborgs are not of the calibre of opponents Celtic can anticipate facing in the group stages of the Champions League (assuming no bizarre reversals), but they disposed of the Polish champions 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round and are as resourceful as Aalborg or Utrecht.

There was plenty to be pleased with in last night’s but the most striking element was the performance of Kris Commons. He scored goal and was credited with an assist, has scored both our league goals this season and had a further assist against Helsinki; an incredible return for a player who three weeks ago was drawing comment on the size of his shorts!

The funny thing is when I read the initial letter I thought John Royle might have been referring to ‘The Boys From the Old Brigade’!

I know I’m being a bit presumptious here but does anyone know the expected dates of the CL group matches or even the dates of last season’s fixtures as I think they follow a similar pattern each season.

Greaves Sports is pretty much the only genuine sports shop left in Glasgow.

Informed staff, good merchandise, and terrific service.

The rest are little more than trainers and jeans outlets staffed by kids (nice enough kids I’m sure).

Get your kit on at Greaves.

Well Ki has apparently gone to Swansea and we have a great chance of getting into the Champions league proper. My question is will this make Celtic splash some cash on a couple of new signings? H.H.

You seem to be convinced that the CL is a bridge too far for us.

Last season the eurpoa looked a bridge too far, but we done ok there, very unlucky not to progress.

If we get there, we will have done what hundreds of other teams couldn’t do, and trust me they all wanted to get there.

I very much doubt we will progress, but the experiance the players will gain is priceless, and the money into the clubs coffers will be a proper shot in the arm.

You also said that big Fraser probably wouldn’t do in the CL what he did last night, confused I am, why not ??? his positioning won’t change cos he is playing against CL players as opposed to SPL, europa players, his ability will be the same.

Better quality players will probably stick the chances away I grant you, but big Fraser will still be the same :>)

McCoist, Bomber, Ellis, Green- the new ‘Brand Brogue’

At the Brogues Superstore in Larkhall High Street the ‘Brand Brogue’ of the above mentioned personnel gathered to promote a new Ibrox club sponsored ‘Emergency’ brogue- it is a brogue specifically designed for sudden demanding and unforeseen marching.

“We wanted to design a comfortably fitting but marvelously robust brogue for the discerning Presbyterian…a sturdy walking shoe for the sensible Protestant. It still has a moderation of the traditional ornamental perforations normally associated with the brogue- and we like to emphasis ‘traditional’. But the difference is its stalwart character yet with a comfortable fitting, but not too comfortable. It has none of the excessive strumpetory of those jezebel like Catholic designs one often sees in modern footwear. None of that devilshness here. This is all about Calvinist functionality. The Emergency Brogue is the educated choice for those who read something unpalatable in one our nations many media outlets…then its merely a case of vigorously marching in relative snugness at the drop of a bowler hat in the safe knowledge that one can rely on refined Reformation cobblery…the Emergency Brogue is also designed to facilitate the stride and gait of the seasoned Orangeman, even if you are inexperienced in extreme marching, like someone such as Sandy Jardine who sets a wonderful pace…that is the marvel of the Emergency Brogue.” Said Emergency Brogue designer Campbell Munro Fergusson at the Larkhall promotion.

There was a sizeable turnout for the unveiling of the Emergency Brogue with club legneds Bomber Brown, Charles Green and David Leggat all doing a tap dance routine in front of the Brogue Superstore- the Krankies, Andy Cameron and Martie Pellow were all there to give out Orange balloons, Sevco pencils and blue emery boards. Billy Blue Nose the Clown, also known as Bomber, by the locals, simultaneously entertained and terrified the children, to the accompaniment of the Bellshill flute band playing traditional tunes.

“What we need for the Emergency Brogue to be successful is a brand loyalty…and we know we have a loyal, loyal follow followers of our brand…as Campbell Munro said this is for the extreme marcher…guys like Sandy and Bomber…so if you have a quandary, are at panic stations after seeing some mild innocuous perceived criticism, no matter how trivial, then you are in a crisis…will I or won’t I? You can be rest assured the Emergency Brogue will scrape the tarmac with the best of them as you stride like a psychotic gallant pioneer towards Hampden…personally I like to accessorize my brogues with mauve socks and a snakebelt…they are also available from the Brogue Superstore” commented Charles Green yesterday.

The Emergency Brogue is all sale at all good traditional stockists and the Brogue Superstore at Larkhall High Street- or they may also be stocked at your local lodge- check before arrival.

At the start of the season we would all have taken a 2 nil win away from home in the UCL play off round first leg, just getting to the group stages is success for us.

With a decent draw in the group stage we could realistically have a chance of last 16, on the flip side a “group of death” draw could see us struggling to avoid 6 pumpings!

Ultimately it is crucial for the development of the team and management, it will let them have a view of the cream of Europe and the standards that must be attained to be a success in the biggest competition of all. It can only be a good thing regardless of what happens.

It would help out if PL got the £££ out and invested some of it, last night proved how lacking we are at centre half at the top level, and we could do with another striker with pace that can genuinely worry the opposition centre halfs.

But great result and we should remember this if we get a hard draw and find ourselves struggling to compete, success for this young team was just getting there!

You are having a laugh with your eulogy to KC.

Great to see him take the goal so well and make it all look easy.

Terrible to see him going through the motions in the first half supporting AM in defence.

Any attack from H/Borg coming down their left had BK and SB going into Peter the Pointer mode and KC transforming himself into a mobile chicane that was all too easy to negotiate.

If the wide player came inside we were left with a right flank that had been torn open, a H/Borg player in a prairie worth of space and KC struggling to catch up.

He did some good stuff last night but all too often his RC attitude followed him into this game. He is now the new GS, a luxury player who will work a couple of class plays per game but little else.

I hope he gets his work and team ethic back.

His problem is that when his goal streak stops he will have little else to offer.

  25. The SportsDirect.Com/newR@ngers deal is interesting.

According to JJB Sports their 10 year deal with RFCia ended because of the clubs administration. It is normal for such a contract to have a bankruptcy clause.

SevCo would then have the opportunity to take the merchandising of NewCo strips and retail operations they own the trademarks of OldCo.

A JV with a retailer rather than a sponsorship with a Sports manufacturer seems an odd decision.
