Commons phenomenal contribution

You will remember times, not so long ago, when a successful Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in any competition, even against lower league opposition. Already this season we have achieved what until recently was regarded as beyond the club, won two games away from home without conceding.

Helsingborgs are not of the calibre of opponents Celtic can anticipate facing in the group stages of the Champions League (assuming no bizarre reversals), but they disposed of the Polish champions 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round and are as resourceful as Aalborg or Utrecht.

There was plenty to be pleased with in last night’s but the most striking element was the performance of Kris Commons. He scored goal and was credited with an assist, has scored both our league goals this season and had a further assist against Helsinki; an incredible return for a player who three weeks ago was drawing comment on the size of his shorts!

  2. Hi Ghuys, I’m looking for a bit of help here. The youngest son, Celtic daft, has been accepted to do a course at Aberdeen college. He is up there with the wife at the moment. He has lived in Germany most of his life, but is desperate to go to Aberdeen. They are having real problems trying to find him accommodation. Do any Aberdeen based Celts know of any “safe” digs or suitable accommodation available in Aberdeen? He doesn’t drive so somewhere not too far out would be required. Any help/ advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

  10. Response to an Orc on Scotzine:

Any other team in Scotland that was in a similar situation to The Rangers* would be experiencing resentment and banter- its called rivalry- but instead those with an unhealthy mindset call it ‘bigotry’. What you have to remember is that The Rangers* cheated the public purse out of valuable tax revenue for the blind pursuit of football glory- that has put the country’s back up. People are sick of people like you whingeing about being treated badly. You have to understand this, as your constant snarling and caterwauling is not good PR for you new club. Along with the issue of Tax avoidance ( I know, I know, you didn’t do it), the illegal use of EBT’s ( yes them- but they haven’t been proved I hear you say) and the undeclared double contracts…so there is a public perception of a corrupt soon to be former institution and systemic cheating. That is the way it is. And most of it is The Rangers* self-inflicted strategic errors that marked their doom. Not Lawell, not a Tim conspiracy or the BBC or Daily Rhebel or UFO’s…The Rangers* overstretched themselves until they began to tear and fall apart at the seams. What’s more during those ‘glory days’ under Murray The Rangers* made few friends with their superiority complex. All big clubs are reviled wherever they play, the same is true of Rangers as it is of Celtic, its a chance for the little people to dance around the bloated body of an arrogant and contentious Goliath- this is the natural order of things. Rangers are merely reaping what they sowed in the Murray years; I didn’t see many Rangers fans question anything when they were winning. Its time to man up and take the Karma.

The SFA/SPL you say vociferously denigrate and accuse of victimizing The Rangers* have in reality bent over in Yogic contortions to accommodate your Club- you are just too hurt and angry to see that. They knew they had to suspend your licence for not paying PAYE under Craig Whyte ( the last messiah since the last one). But they chickened out. Instead settling on a transfer embargo, hoping that would satisfy your club. But it didn’t. You couldn’t see they were doing you a favour. Your club decided to jeopardize the whole of Scottish football in the eyes of FIFA by going to a civil court to contest that official favour. The SFA then had no chance but to enforce embargo once the boomerang came back to hit them in the napper. But as a caveat they gave your club until September the 1st to sign players- another favour. But you can’t see that for bitterness. The SFA/SPL even threatened every member club just to assist the smooth installation of The Rangers* into the SPL- but fan power put a stop to that. This is democracy brother. Listen, The Rangers* are not a special case, they are the same as every other club. No special treatment. Those days are over. Get used to that. This is democracy.

The ten point deduction was an automatic penalty activated by adminstration. Self-inflicted. Yes you had a measly £160-000 fine. Didn’t agree with that. But the September 1st deadline still allows your club to assemble a team on exorbitant wages. Since you are the same club will you pay back the 270 creditors you owed money to? Even your ‘relegation’ to Div3 is in actuality a fast-track PROMOTION for a new club that doesn’t possess the required 3 YEARS of accounts. That again is a FAVOUR. Preferential treatment by the establishment, if you will. But then they’re all out to get you. Does that mean UEFA are out to get The Rangers* because your new club is ineligible from competing in Europe for three years? No, of course not. That would just be silly. All they are doing is what the SFA are too weak to properly do- they are enforcing the rules: a new club cannot play in Europe until it has 3 YEARS of audited accounts.

Have you looked at the RangersMedia & FF fans sites and the constant referencing to ‘taigs’, Roman Catholics ( with a peculiar fixation for the Irish variety), child-abuse etc? This is endemic among a delinquent hardcore of your clubs sectarian dragoons (but what about Celtic…I hear you say). So don’t go pointing fingers at other clubs or their fans until your club and its fans get its house in order- Rangers are the most hated club in Scotland because of this attitude of ‘its everybody else’s fault’…the constant harping of your martyr/persecution complex, the mass paranoia, the lack of remorse of an unrepentant support, the turning to threats at the blink of an eye and bullyboy tactics of the no surrender siege mentality- everyone in Scotland is sick of it. It was McCoist’s lynchmob tactic of demanding to know the names of the independent judicial panel members. In one reckless act of intimidation completely snapped any threads of support the club had from traditional allies in Scotland. It was cowardly and unforgivable. But unfortunately this is the psychology the likes of opportunists such as Green pander to in the lowest common denominator of The Rangers* fan base- act like a demented thug making threats, spouting conspiracy theories and you are immediately canonised as some sort of hero figure by a very gullible support who have had all their critical faculties blunted by hurt pride and blind anger.

It is interesting that the Guardian printed the letter you referred to. Interesting in the sense that the original letter, as published, did not name the song itself.

“So Pussy Riot get two years for singing a song disapproved by the authorities in a church. In Scotland recently, the SNP regime passed a law allowing for five years imprisonment for singing a traditional song disapproved by the authorities at a football match. So two years is really lenient.”

Now, of course every chance that the initial letter was edited, but as I say, as published no song was named. If it wasn’t edited how did the Guardian know that John Royle was referring to the ‘Billy Boys’ and print a follow-up letter quoting it? Or does John Royle really believe that the ‘Billy Boys’ is a “traditional song”?

“Celtic face Helsingborg in the first leg of their Champions league qualifier and they are 9/5 to get the campaign off to a winning start according to our latest football odds. Gary Cooper is the key man and Hills are 7/2 that he scores and Celtic win on Tuesday night.”

Wilson was not chosen as a first team pick last night based on shin splits.

For me that does not make him the ideal solution to what we definitely need for our up and coming CL campaign. The boy will always get my 100% support when he plays or represents Celtic. I.e on off the pitch. His merits on whether he is the solution for our weakness in my opinion is no. Kelvin done very well when he came on last night and if the club thinks he is the solution he gets my backing. I will not lie to myself though and say that I think he can plug this gap in so short a time. It is also a basic fact that a fresh player coming on after an hour has a fitness advantage that is just common sense.

No criticisms of how the squad is managed or rotated.

agree with everything you say up until saying these players we sold. Off course we did but we have not replaced any or addressed any obvious deficiencies and the basis of my gripe is that if we dont strengthen then I think the UL would be more beneficial. I cant see Fraser Forster doing what he did last night with CL quality teams. An expensive proven quality centre back would promote Chaz and Vic to play where they would be more effective and that costs also but the shot in the arm that Lenny would get from a quality centre back preferably experienced having dealt with Thompson, Loovens, Hooiveld won the SPL, qualified for UL, sold Ki removed 10 ?? players from the wage bill, conducted himself impeccably … under incredible pressure.

  25. Forgive me, I’m about to get ahead of myself….,,.just a little

My mind is wandering to the CL Groups…I know , I know but it’s unavoidable, so good was last nights result

What or more accurately , who , is occupying my thoughts is Charlie Mulgrew. Any Celtic supporter who doesn’t love what Charlie has achieved either is missing a soul or has no pulse

None the less, Charlie is a dilemma. Neil wants to play with 2 advanced full backs . In Matthews and Izzy we have 2 who can play that role. The problem with this system is you need a midfield which rarely loses possession and 2 Centre Backs with pace. Real pace in at least one if them

Think Barca levels of ball retention and Puyol pace at the back and you get how you need to play for this system to work .Charlie doesn’t tick that box , yet he is one of our best players.

In my view we either sign a Puyol style player to partner Charlie or we look at a midfield anchor role , Busquets, for him

This is only necessary for Europe, Charlie can stroll through the SPL with ease

Not an easy one for Neil and John Park

I’ve just today taken up the Guardian after a 30 years+ hiatus – I just couldn’t stomach the the Herald’s pro-rankers guff any more.

Anyway, when I read that letter (without benefit of your post) I actually wondered about the editing. Maybe today’s correspondent knew something we didn’t, or maybe he’s just a rabid Tim with a fertile imagination. Whatever, I’m going to try the old Guardian for a while. Mrs Bee liked the crossword, so I’m sorted.
