Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

  2. Could be a case of backs-to-the-wall in Cliftonville on Wednesday night!

    :-)

  3. I’ve decided to wear my lucky golf pants when watchin the game on Wednesday…..there’s 18 holes in them……very handy for emergencies…

  4. What ya think about Lennoxtown now bada bing. personally I don’t feel it’s sent a stream of yuff through to CP. Trouble is, the price of footballers now is so immense that one player per five years (JF for instance) might justify it financially (I’m just guessing ).

  5. If Cha Mul Grew

has had both his haircuts in time……

    …….he’ll score.

  6. In sure those knuckle draggers who’ve been plastered over the news of late will undoubtedly have a reception committee for the travelling support on Wednesday.

Hope and pray our Bhoys stay safe.

Be in your guard and don’t ever forget that scum absolutely despise us , it is the very essence of their being , if indeed the be at all!

48 hours to go..and I’m still no closer to deciding what the score will be. I’ll plump for a 2 1 hoops and the same again in the return, simply cos that makes it 4 2. I like 4 2.

  12. So match fixing is ok if it’s in Italy but the Greeks and Turks get banned somebody’s got to sue the arse of UEFA sometime soon shirly

  13. Anyone else worried about getting to Solitude get in touch with Hamiltontin, and arrange a pickup point.Room for another 3.Get to match, pick up after, then pint time.

Trouble in ol Scotia Major again this evening, blastbombs, petrol bombs the orange order of the day.The embers of empire. Not ideal a couple of days before we are due to play over there but I have faith that our supporters will be in good company, will be looked after and looked out for. Guessing that Hoops will not play now, or never in the old green hoops again. For those with black’n’white tellies there could be some consolation if Gary goes to play for Harry in the er hoops. Highest bidder the destination now, and Hoops as a Harlow boy is really a London exile. Will make it harder to make the England squad, but Harry will talk him up make no mistake. Leaves us weaker though when he goes though, but not that much weaker that we will not get past Clftonville over two legs. Which is the priority now!

More tickets for Cliftonville v Celtic on sale tomorrow from Sean Graham bookmakers in Castle St Belfast @ 10am. 1st come basis 2 per person

  16. 31003 @ 21 24……..I see you’re in prolific mood to-night and oozing confidence for the big match on Wednesday night against our good Belfast friends.

Glad to see you also have Georgios The Greek getting a couple of his now typical European scores – who needs Hooper. Then Solitude will rock with both sets of fans doing the Celtic Huddle. C’mon the HOOPS.

Thanks I’m looking into it just now.

Just read your post at 21:00, thanks, it’s a very kind offer. I’m over in Glasgow, and would rather travel with a supporters club. Belfast doesn’t seem to be a place for a sole traveller just now.

  19. This match may be our first real game but it’s Cliftonville’s……….

    Final.

We need to right, right from the off.

Have all the doomsayers gone to their beds to worry about something other than Celtic- earlier today was like a gathering of Jonesie’s all shouting “dont panic, dont panic captain Manwairing” while panicking like feck. Wednesday will be a tight game- as all Euro away games are generally tight, and we will do them at home- but not by too many. Then everyone goes away happy- apart from the fleg/ marching angry mob

  21. Twists–see you had a good day at Hamilton.Everytime I’m in Scotland the meetings are clashing with family stuff.I think Celtic will win 3-0.Cliftonville are no mugs. They pass and keep the ball well, and are clever near goal.Any of the guys coming over will have a great time.KTF!

The next time you are in Scotland and have spare time, let me know and I’ll definitely travel up.

  23. Was at the European Cup -now Champs Lge- game between Celtic and Shamrock Rovers in Dublin back in 1985 and 25,000 crammed into Shamrocks Milltown stadium. A fantastic atmosphere with both teams getting a tremendous ear-shattering reception before the match. Murdo McCleod scored the winner to give Celts an away victory. Wonderful occasion.

  24. watched our german tour . dire dire stuff . pre season or not , we should have put in better displays than that . with victor away . and hooper about to follow it leaves us a lot weaker than last season . I hope to god john parks has something special waiting to don the hoops . If not it could be a long season and a short European adventure .
