Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

You watch yourself mhate, and lay off KK he’s a Celtic gent like yourself.HH

  2. I think too many people get mixed up with a 1 goal every 2 games striker……and a 1 goal every 2 games average striker. To my mind Gary Hooper comes into the latter category. Granted, he scored some important goals….but there were also a lot of IMPORTANT games I think he was posted missing. Lets sell him and get a real 1 goal every 2 games striker. Or even better….

There will be no empty seats at Cliftonville on Wednesday night but await the smsm best supporters in the world? Cannot even fill blah blah blah spin.

No doubt they will put a negative spin on it. Personally it is a little disappointing that we couldn’t sell our own allocation given that it is a relatively quick journey to Belfast.

No fearty dobbers I hope :-)

  4. It would appear that some of our Scottish based fans like to sing about the Troubles, but when given the opportunity to sample an Ulster fry, they don’t have the stomach for it.

  5. To explain….if I score 30 goals over a 60 game season I average 1 goal every 2 games…..ie….Gary Hooper…….but if 10 of those goals come over 3 games in the early rounds of domestic cups then, I’m sorry, to my mind that does not equate to a 1 goal every 2 games striker……embdy know what ahm talkin bout…..cos even ahm loast wi this???

Cleater Moor Celtic are playing Blantyre Celtic in a friendly on Saturday is the OHG going down to the game?

  7. Oglach, you can’t blame people for putting safety first, personally i’d love to be going, it will be great craic and remind me of the old days when i went into a well fortified pub in the Ardoyne to watch a match against the dead team, can’t remember the name of it and met many good lads there. Hopefully many good celtic fans in Belfast will enjoy the occasion and lack of travel to be talked about for years. Will still sell out imo

Frankly i’m amazed on three counts

1 That uefa did not switch the game away from belfast especially at this time of year

2 That Celtic didn’t ask uefa to do so

3 That celtic agreed to the switch of dates

I have Celtic supporting friends who frequently sing IRA songs.

Some travel Euro continent each season to watch the Hoops.

I still have a spare ticket in my wallet.

    I couldn’t give it away.

Some have legitimate reasons for missing this tie.

Two of them told me that they didn’t fancy it because they felt it was potentially dangerous.

I find it ironic that they will be chanting about armalites,Sam missiles ,etc, and glorifying the bravest of the brave.

Yet shit their pants at the thought of Loyalist objectors.

Whilst our Ulster Tims face up to this ( and much much worse) daily.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for our Ulster Tims.

I would share their concerns if they were ever going to be in any real danger. The areas where there is any chance of trouble can easily be avoided. In the main the Cliftonville road is safe. Solitude itself being the length of one street away from the Bone and Ardoyne and the heart of Nationalist North Belfast (via Oldpark Avenue) The only real danger most will be in is from alcohol poisoning

Anyway I hope all who travel stay safe and have a great time

  21. Cliftonville 0-4 Celtic

Plucky Cliftonville held out for 24 minutes before Scott Browns lob over their heroic keeper put the SPL Champions and last seasons Champions League last sixteen heros in command. Celtic settled somewhat after this superb goal and where never in any danger. Further goals from Samaras (2) and Lustig rubber stamped their obvious superiority. At the final whistle both sets of fans conducted a stadium huddle while exchanging phone numbers to arrange meet ups for the return leg in Presbyterian Glasgow.
