Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

  1. We all remember Celtic winning the Wembley Cup after beating really serious opposition and the disastrous season that followed. My main concern is reading the amount of injuries sustained by many of the players after the recent pre-season games.

Watching Spain in the recent Confederations Cup and the many Barcelona players in action, it crossed my mind how these lads can keep going for such a long hard season without injury problems – it’s always the same guys , Xavi, Iniesta. Pedro, Villa etc who seem to play in every game. Is it the sheer skill factor that enables these great players to avoid the cloggers and injury.

Seriously ? I’m off work this week and never even considered that a ticket would have been available. Can they still be had in Glasgow ? Anyone got a seat in a car or supporter’s bus ?

As soon as I heard the name Billy Sharp the second name to pop into my head was Kojo. Its been a time but who knows?

Have to disagree re McGeady. It took 2 or 3 opponents to shepherd Aidan into those “blind alleys”. Failure to capitalise was down more to the management and team mates in my opinion.

  5. Yip, on BBC NI tonight, 500 tickets returned to Cliftonville. Details re sale will be on the reds’ website to ight

They can RUN….. as they always do.

    But they CAN NOT hide.

    Although they will always TRY.

  8. Bhoys all this talk about your length

    ( height )doesn’t matter a jot.

It’s all about what you do when in front of that big ……(goal).

  9. Kilbowie Kelt.

Can you explain your dig at my inability to get to work and how it should prevent me from sitting about doing nothing all day?

  10. ” it’s always the same guys , Xavi, Iniesta. Pedro, Villa etc who seem to play in every game. Is it the sheer skill factor that enables these great players to avoid the cloggers and injury.”

I think they have the skill and brains to amble around and pass the ball instead of chasing it box to box.

I believe they still cover a lot of ground but its jogging rather than sprints all over the place.

It’s a broad church right enough but, personally, I see them as the antithesis of what Celtic stands for; green hun entrists.

We are, sadly, disproportionately affected on this site…

If Hoops goes, medical evidence notwithstanding, Austin ‘yes’, Sharp ‘no’. Stats are not determinative with strikers but they are a central factor…

  13. Just got sight of the Eire go Bragh banner supporting the Green Brigade on Facebook

    Cracker!

Apart from the big ugly mush holding it.

My my what a job the custodians and manager have done on a lot of the support. Talk of extra time, difficult game and selling our best players is now apparently the norm down Celtic park way…………and the best part is so many fans agree!!!!!

    Where’s ma wine!

“Wee snippet from today’s Financial Times……

That’s interesting, after the article in the Economist.

The Economist and FT are in the same stable – Pearson PLC

The FT articles that I’ve read have been pro-NewCo PLC up to and including the Green myths being repeated almost verbatim.

Aidan was such a talent his tricks and exquisite skill were worth the admission alone. Like you I was disappointed with his contribution in the end. The fancy stuff left his game and he looked a sad frustrated figure in the end.

It’s difficult to gauge the current team and their suitability for dovetailing with a talent like McGeady. For example is Balde a footballer or target man ?

  20. masty is neil lennon on

funny thing these returned tickets??/I called the TO on Friday and was told all tickets had been sold on the first day…

  21. Kilbowie Kelt on

    Blantyre Tim,

I thought I was funning with you about your podium successes.

I was obviously aware that you had a serious injury.

I apologise if you saw some jibe in my attempt at humour.

I promise never to repeat my insensitive indiscretion.

    Good Luck.

  22. I think you may find extra tickets have become avaiable for Wednseday’s

tie due to an extra temporary stand being installed.

    Seen this on Twitter

Modular seating at Solitude nearly completed.

  23. UEFA dismiss Fenerbahce appeal – banned though they may go to CAS.

Beziktas also had their appeal for match-fixing thrown out.

Appears 4th place Bursaspor will be in Friday’s draw.

  24. Maestro – looks well hope they sell it out and make as much money to break the stranglehold others have had in the league. I’d say after this alot of celtic fans will have a soft spot for Cliftonville.

With the new stand up they should try and get a friendly against some uk team to make full use of the effort even more money kerching!!

  25. Maestro it is Celtic that have sent back the 500 tickets. I am quite shocked that is why I asked the question do you think it has anything to do with the orange shower.

  26. I can only assume the reason that 500 tickets have been returned by Celtic for the game on Wednesday is down to the Rio like carnival the blood of our blood have been putting on for the past few days. To those travelling to the game rest assured apart from a wee bit of route planning to avoid ‘them’ and you’ll have a great time.

A bit disappointed Celtic supporters didn’t take up their full allocation.

I hope we’re not asking the same question as we contemplate where we’re sending him on loan this time next year?

Raw he certainly is. Whether he’s a talent will remain to be seen. You tube offers some hope but we’ll see. I’ll be rooting for him and hoping for the best.

To answer the question for me he’s not a target man.
