Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

  1. JoeFillipisHaircut , thats all it is. I would hope that NL & PL have buttons to press on first second & third choices at this stage. I think we have enough in the tank to beat Cliftonville over two legs , we should be much fitter & more experienced. In a one off match i’d be more concerned (like the CL its loaded in favour of bigger clubs). We have to at least qualify for Europa League group stage to keep the fans interest over the season, and i hope we have some good players coming in if we haven’t then we may struggle to reach CL group stage and after last years success it would be a big disappointment.

    – For me, N’Guemo is too small, and at 28 will be unlikely to be sold on for any kind of profit. We want a big mobile destroyer who is young, and will attract interest from other leagues. Rabiu at Evian is one, but I would far rather we go for kara Mbodj at Racing Genk. he is massive (far bigger than wanyama) but lean and fast, as well as being physically very robust. He has attracted a lot of epl interest previously, but went to genk after arsenal etc cooled off. genk really know their stuff and have 2 or 3 bodies that could really add to our squad. their Directeur Sportif should be a target for us if J park is ever poached.

I also notice that Lens have just sold Samba Sow to karabukspor. Lens have a history of producing wanyama type players, and this guy could have been an option (24, Malian internartional, 6ft1 and secured a move to Karabukspor… I’m sure Celtic would have been more attractive). Sevilla have a superb player in the Wanyama role, but they paid approx 3million for him a year ago, and he is now (unsurprisingly) attracting attention from Arsenal etc. France U20 international, ex-Lens, 6’3″ and very strong. I am pretty sure he is the reason they didn’t show any interest in Wanyama – this guy has even more potential and is only 20. Kondogbia is his name – I am sure he will be a huge star (already dooing the biz at Sevilla).

kara Mbodj, Mohammed rabiu or perhaps this Congolese guy at Le havre (i forget his name) we have been linked with, would be my thoughts on who we might go for.

  4. LuxCelt – Thanks- Some interesting shouts there will have a look at them. I just hope JP is still on his game. I also hope that we follow up on PL’s statement that if a £4-5m player comes up and he’s right then we buy him and that this was not rhetoric to buy season books.

  5. My 2 bob on the Mc Geady rumour, I would love him to return ,cracking player and CL type we need in the final third!! agree that out wide was a waste, id have him tucked in behind the front two! oh and that daft saying many are spouting about not working the 2nd time is mainly down to the fact the players return too old and a shadow off their former self i.e Charlie and Frank Mac, Aiden hasn’t reached his prime yet, would love to see him back but wouldn’t be surprised to see him down in epl with Everton the likely destination!!

    Ah am stretchin’, here…

Neil, mebbe wiz working oan bringing in Billy Sharp.. Independent of the Victor Deal.

The fact that Billy is oan Southhampton’s

Neil, needs a Couple Strikers.. Fast.

We may squeak past The Irish.. but it is a Lead Pipe cinch that we need a loat Mair Firepower, than we hiv Presently..noo, that Hoops is More or less oota It.

And Neil, must act oan this.. Sooner than Soon.

He messed up by bringing in Balde. as a possible First Teamer.

Balde,in Ma Opinion is not much mair Advanced in his Fitbaing Skills.. at this time in his Career..than say… Atajic..

Tony Watt, is Much more further advanced in his Fitba Apprenticeship than Balde

Na..Say whit ye like it wiz quite ridiculous fur us tae expect.. Balde tae walk intae oor Team..

    He could come good..

    But in Ma opinion..

We wull hiv tae wait a Few Months before Balde could Be considered a First Team Regular..

    Like Ah said..

It beggars belief that Neil and Co.. would consider Balde tae be ready fur Prime Time..

  10. Luxcelt – Like the look of kara Mbodj , if we could get a similar player to vic and do the same again we would be sorted. Genk are not in need of our cash though, they are very profitable and have group stage experice in EL & CL

  11. The height of our forwards has never been a concern to me in my years watching the Bhoys from lennox, dixie, maccari, dalgleish to larsson .macavennie.joe miller.maghee an hooper to name a few i’ve seen as long as we play football on the deck a small quick forward of those qualities will always be my preference before a tall forward anyday h.h

  12. Would want aiden back either he and sammy slowed down too many promising attacks due to not releasing the ball early enough when they played together,it done my head in watching them keep the ball too long when it was easier to pass and move only my hummble oppinion tho

  13. All the vibes coming from the club and support indicate to me we have a right potential banana skin on Wednesday night.

Hard to know what CQN is,..or indeed what it should be.

Is it a gathering of people who are obsessed by the club that Br. Walfrid created & who share his vision ?

Or is it a platform for people who believe that we should do what is best for ourselves ,…& to Hell with the struggling masses ?

Apparently, those who advocate the latter option are becoming the majority on these pages.

Maybe they are the New Celtic.

    Let’s hope not.

Burghbhoy. I think Wednesday nights game will be a very stiff test for us Cliftonville will see this as there Barcelona moment by claiming a big scalp.I dont care what any one says but after loseing 5 games on the trot it will not be easy to lift ourselves for this match. We dont have a settled defence and we lost goals for fun in Germany that coupled by injuries and players leaving has left us looking fragile. H.H.

  21. Thats why a like hooper..solid upper body for his size..mullgrew,joe and kelvin need that in their locker. Too easily pushed around and dispossessed..i like our taller guys to be men on the ball not faireys

  22. Found this interesting description of VW’s former club Beerschot AC on STV website.

Beerschot AC went out of business this year, although a phoenix club has emerged in their place.

The new team may be entitled to claim for the money but, regardless, the Royal Belgian FA are entitled to the cash and could retain it themselves to put back into youth development in the country.

    Talking aboot Lintys..

Ah hid used that expression which Ah hiv jist used… fur Donkeys years.

and only Last Year.. Ah found oot that a Linty wiz a Boid!

Ah really didnae connect that Name. Linty wi being a Bird.

Linty being the Scottish woid fur.. A Linnet.

Fur.. Ye wouldn’t expect a Bird tae be a Fast Runner..

Although, there is a Bird over Here in Nevada Who kin soitenly Motor..

    Ah call him.. Killer.

and. .he sure is.. a Killer..

Ah hiv watched him run across the Parking Area. Underneath and Around the Parked

Vehicles.. chasing down a Plump Pigeon..

and When he catches One. he Promptly Grasps it’s Neck In his beak.. and takes off

running wi his Prize… at the gallop for the Tall and Uncut.. Nearby Woods.

There he wull Bury the Pigeon.. were it wull.. Hopefully.. Rot.

which he will then eat.. when he reckons it is ripe.

for.. Road Runners do not Eat Fresh Meat..

they only eat Carrion.. like a Vulture.

They are quite Big Birds.. an I have never seen one Fly.. they kin Flutter a wee bit aff the Gru..but Ah hiv never seen…Ma Killer actually fly.

They are Quite Fearless.. Ah widnae want tae starte one down…that’s fur sure.

All this talk of Aiden Mc Geady. Please please no. It was torture enough for 90% of the time as he slowed down attacks lost the ball or disappeared up his latest blind alley. The rest of the time he was magic but I’m afraid Celtic cannot afford a player who produces only 10% of the time.
