Continually learning Gordon Strachan

956

I remember Scotland-England games being huge events.  They were proper derby games, fired up by a balance – a vastly more resourceful England were in the ascendancy, but Scotland had more wins in the history books.  Despite the odd hiding we thought we could take them.

The Home International Championships probably ended at the right time, just before Scotland lunged into mediocrity.  No derby remains attractive if one side dreads the game coming round, while the other considers it a formality, but our former manager has given us reason for hope.

Gordon Strachan took time off from the game to invest in his stock of knowledge before becoming Celtic manager.  Despite an, erm, memorable opening week, Gordon blitzed Scottish football as Celtic manager.  He filled the boots of legend Martin O’Neill, and within 18 months eclipsed him by reaching what we used to refer to as ‘the next level in the Champions League’.

Despite going on to reach the knock-out stage of the Champions League again, and becoming our third manager to win three-in-a-row, Gordon stopped progressing.  His time at Celtic petered out, while the entire Middlesbrough episode was a nightmare.

Gordon, like Martin before him, looked as though the game had passed him by.  His resurgence at Scotland is evidence of his outstanding attribute – he’s a student of the game who continually learns.

Roy Hodgson has by far the better players, but never bet against Gordon.

Shaun’s goal on Friday

31 years ago in Sarawak, Malaysia, a midwife, Beatrice Lo, assisted in the delivery of a boy born to a Scottish family who lived in her community.  Beatrice got in touch with a common friend after wee Shaun’s goal on Friday, very proud of the kid she brought into the world.

  1. Huddle.

Seriously. Without pace he would b lost in the Premiership. His other failings are covered up by pace . WGS recommend him. Pace is the first requirement . The rest can be coached or learned by experience.

    Probably ‘Made In Essex’

    Lahnden boys are mainly ok

Tho’ so are some Essex tbh!

  3. I thought early on that England were the more ambitious team in terms of passing up the middle. This could be a hefty defeat if Hodgson doesn’t disrupt their line up soon.

I thought Hanley was more at fault than Robertson. When Milner picked the ball up he had 2 yards on Ox;ade-Chamberlain. He ended up back pedaling lazily and the Eng;and player was 3 yards ahead of him.

  4. No problem. we’ll disagree. Sure he’s no slouch that’s obvious but he isn’t quick you can see that.

England move as a whole unit. We move like by sending one or two men forward or feck up a simple pass in midfield. England look bigger and fitter. Scott brown our best player.

  6. Emu .

same here. He seems to have pace down outside but once turned onto his right(wrong) foot ……move is over and he has to pass back. Don’t believe the hype.

Martin and Naismith are coming to deep. WIth Maloney and Anya on the pich it is leaving us exposed. I would bring Dorran and Fletcher on for Martin and Mulgrew and leave Naismith up front. At the moment we have nobody upfront and all our play is going backwards.

  10. Very hard working England team, rushing to close Scots players down as soon as they get possession especially in mid field. This means either they get dispossessed or have to pass back or rush a forward pass.

Means only spasmodic possession and interplay therefore no flow.

Its a pity Whitiker and Martin are statues!

  11. Worth repeating, methinks:

From the well-respected “establishment” Scottish Legal News:

“BDO, the liquidators of former football club Glasgow Rangers FC, have banked £24 million for the defunct club’s creditors.”

C’Mon Gordon Strachan and his Scots warriors, still time to win this against the AE (auld enemy) !!!

  12. Hate games like this.

    Feel terrible for months after.

No one else seems to care.

Like when celtic went to USA and played man uto in an attempt to promote the club and build on our seemingly untapped potential support and the whole thing turned into a disaster.

The stadium’s including the one in Boston were bursting at the seams with people roaring on Man-U.

    Talk about cringeworthy.

Needless to say they walloped us each time.

Took me months to get over it.

Didn’t give a monkey’s about the champions league at the time, I took it so bad.

Just couldn’t get over the embarrassment of losing those meaningless games by such margins.

Hate games like tonight’s against them.

  13. the glorious balance sheet on

When is someone going investigate how much money the parasite that is Minty Moonbeams has leeched off the taxpayers of the UK?

At the time of the banking crash his various companies owed HBOS £800 million. As far as I`m aware none of that money has been paid back and HBOS of course were bailed out by the taxpayer so thats £800 million that creep has taken from you and I for starters.

Then there are his dealings with Ticketus. Ticketus are run by Octopus Investments. They are run as an Enterprise Investment Scheme. That is a scheme that gives venture capitalists tax reliefs from HMRC on funds that they provide to other businesses. The idea being that this stimulates the economy, creates jobs etc.

Whyte obtained £24 million from Ticketus when giving Minty his £1, but Rangers had secured around £10 million in funds from Ticketus in the 3 years before that. If we assume that the tax relief is 20% (just a guess on my part) then that is another £6.8 million that the taxpayer has coughed up to bankroll Minty and the Huns.

And then there are the very fortunate land deals that Minty just happened upon at a time when he needed money most.

    a) Making £4.725 million profit on land bought for only £375,000 3 years beforehand ahead of the Commonwealth Games

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-16411195

    b) Securing a shopping mall in the heart of Edinburgh valued at £50 million for 40p

    http://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/top-stories/sir-david-murray-set-to-buy-50m-princes-mall-for-only-40p-1-2197787

The main political parties talk of welfare scroungers, of the undeserving poor etc. But if there`s a bigger scrounger and sponge of public funds than Sir Skinty in all of the UK then I would be amazed.

  14. After the chants coming from the English “support”, does anyone else think the undead might be leading their choir?

England are a far superior team. Can’t say I have been too impressed with any of the Scots, including Anya (who seems only to have pace, imo) and Anderson. Shaun Maloney seems to be the only one who has any imagination.

  15. This is a poor imitation of the titanic clashes of the 70’s & 80’s.

There’s not one world class player on show and in Scotland’s case most of them are barely “international” class.

It was same on Friday, despite the strange out pouring for Charlie on here. Poor game with only Maloney looking like he’d improve Celtic, and unfortunately we all know he can’t stay fit.
