Continually learning Gordon Strachan

956

I remember Scotland-England games being huge events.  They were proper derby games, fired up by a balance – a vastly more resourceful England were in the ascendancy, but Scotland had more wins in the history books.  Despite the odd hiding we thought we could take them.

The Home International Championships probably ended at the right time, just before Scotland lunged into mediocrity.  No derby remains attractive if one side dreads the game coming round, while the other considers it a formality, but our former manager has given us reason for hope.

Gordon Strachan took time off from the game to invest in his stock of knowledge before becoming Celtic manager.  Despite an, erm, memorable opening week, Gordon blitzed Scottish football as Celtic manager.  He filled the boots of legend Martin O’Neill, and within 18 months eclipsed him by reaching what we used to refer to as ‘the next level in the Champions League’.

Despite going on to reach the knock-out stage of the Champions League again, and becoming our third manager to win three-in-a-row, Gordon stopped progressing.  His time at Celtic petered out, while the entire Middlesbrough episode was a nightmare.

Gordon, like Martin before him, looked as though the game had passed him by.  His resurgence at Scotland is evidence of his outstanding attribute – he’s a student of the game who continually learns.

Roy Hodgson has by far the better players, but never bet against Gordon.

Shaun’s goal on Friday

31 years ago in Sarawak, Malaysia, a midwife, Beatrice Lo, assisted in the delivery of a boy born to a Scottish family who lived in her community.  Beatrice got in touch with a common friend after wee Shaun’s goal on Friday, very proud of the kid she brought into the world.

  1. Some amount of nonsense talked about the referendum on here, not for the first time.

Those of us who voted No did so because we judged being in the union as best for Scotland. I don’t want to rehash all of the old arguments but bear in mind one new fact – the SNP’s economic case was predicated on oil revenues and forecast a minimum price over the next few years of $100 per barrel. The latest price is around $80 and still falling. An independent Scotland would have therefore had an even bigger deficit than was originally forecast, meaning massive cuts or tax rises.

Not only Yes voters support the Scotland team. Nationalism isn’t the only form of patriotism. And those of us who voted no did indeed support Scotland and not England last night. It shouldn’t need to be said, but apparently it does.

Tony , as far as I can see it and I certainly may be wrong is this…….

Ashley has lent Sevco £3m currently.

This is secured against the world famous car park & the equally world famous Edmunston house .

Therefore he is guaranteed his money when it goes tits up.

Next request for money will be secured against The Bigot dome and the training ground.

MA then owns all the property.

They then default and he leases these assets back to thems for mega money each year

  3. Did you know that Nicky Campbell’s father was in the IRA?

He was adopted and was brought up in Edinburgh. He watched the 1967 European Cup Final with his adopted father and fell in love with Celtic. The wee boy’s bedroom walls were filled with green and white posters.

Of course that didn’t go down well with the Edinburgh public school establishment and he was discouraged from supporting those Fenians – and sadly for him instead supported Hearts.

He traced his natural parents and had more in common with his father than his mother, who was a Protestant so couldn’t be seen to having a child to a Catholic.

His father explained to Campbell why he joined the IRA.

His radio show this morning stank of intolerance and blind bigotry – seething from their calls. The lies about our club, the lies about our support, the lies about Irish history.

  4. burgh bhoy,

what was funny last night was the current newco club chairman in the interview last night getting his edminston car par and albion houses mixed up he even said

    or whatever its called.

  5. My friends in Celtic,

Really did we expect anything more from the England support. It is the same repertoire of songs we have heard for years.

Many of these people, not all, by any manner are vile.

Ok, we want to quote the songs that should be covered by “offensive behaviour”. Let us not jump on the moral high ground and answer Billy Bhoy’s question @ 21.23hrs.

Yes it was chants about Jimmy Saville, the same vile chants we have heard at Celtic Park at domestic games, probably from the same supporters.

As Celtic supporters we pride ourselves in our morals and ethics. Most of us have a core value of justice / equality and chants such as this are equally repugnant.

Possibly, as a prominent poster pointed out “If the Tartan Army had not been as ineffective as the team” then we would have drowned out the English in our own back yard.

Finally to all the point scoring political analysists quoting the number 45 as if its some equation to the Jacobite uprising of 1745, get a life and ask yourself “If you know your history”

    HH and Jacobites forever.

Yeah bud , I saw that PMSL .

The fabled car park and Edminston House have had mair tick secured on them than a clock!!!!

    Real funny stuff

  7. burghbhoy

Oh yes I get that, I know that mate, but you missing my point here have the one who guaranteed him those securities in a position to do so that’s my point, if they are then, my point is he must have seen the deeds? No?

  8. Police Scotland are hypocrites. They can’t hear 5,000 clearly chanting F*** the IRA yet a CQN’ers son has a Court appearance because a wolf eared Focus guy could swear he was definitely singing Roll of Honour even though he was somewhere between 50/100 yards away.It was always the same one law for the Establishment and one for the Fenians. What they fail to realise is that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.

Faith of our Father’s living still in spite of dungeon, fire & sword.

  9. Didn’t see the game last night – the scoreline was just the right side of acceptable.

England are in a different league to us.

What has been obvious recently is that, we as Celtic supporters, have been blessed in “modren” times to have had mangers such as Martin, WGS and Neil.

    BlessedAreTheCelts CSC.

  10. tonydonnelly67

    Fair point.

Cannot imagine Ashley speculating any money without cast iron guarantees.

Therefore, I can only imagine he has seen the deeds and got authorisation from the owner.

If I remember correctly Sevco must own the the world famous house and car park as were they not bought from the share issue of 2012 funds?

The Bigot done & The training ground…… Who the hell knows who owns them?

    My guess is John Brown

  11. Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon @ 09.58 hrs.

Absolutely spot on, but you should never let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

    HH.

  12. ive never really got what the value of the car park is, other than match days its a piece of ground surrounded by a number of other plots.

same with edminston house, its worth zilch really in the commercial market.

  13. St Stivs

I reckon they are so keen on the car park as I’ve been told there are untold mineral reserves underneath.

While I respect Ashley for the ruthless and successful businessman he is,he is not infallible.

He has made some serious losing bets in his time, including,as I’ve said before,£300m on HBOS.

Apparently if they do not own the car park then the club deck can;t be opened. Something to do with the Club Deck punters parking there. Either that or someone can charge Sevco for use of the car park on match days and that could soct them a fortune. I think it is vastly over rated though. Do Celtic have a multi million pound valuation on the old bus park or the environs around Celtic Park?

Edimston House is nothing more than a building. No more or less in value than the old London Road school. They have been using these ‘assets’ to gain loans for the last year or two but in reality they are worthless much like their squad. The penny is beginning to drop though with the authorities. The net is closing in and the Whyte Knight is on his way to clear up some things. I hope he is staying in Judas’s old bunker at Murray mansions because he is going to be needing round the clock protection.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far…

Postmatch stuff after Italy 1– Albania 0 featured a rant from Conte re the decline of the Italian national team , the causes of that decline and the difficulty of doing his job when nobody gives a fig..Looks like the man is regretting accepting the gig.

Off oot to collect the money earned from forecasting that an EPL team would beat a Championship team .The odds on an England win increased when Scotland beat Ireland .Thanks !

  19. KevJungle – Walk-on in the Jungle is magic, just magic

While I think you get a lot right and certainly your post this morning has some very good points if you put half the energy into positivity for Celtic we would be celebrating our 2nd European Cup win soon!

Are you part of any group who actively engage with the board?

I think ranting is not really giving you much closure. I suggest you put all your points together and fire them off to Mr Lawwell and ask for a face to face meeting. I think you may just get some of the answers you are looking for.

  20. After watching both international matches it was interesting to note that Scottish supporters did not boo the Irish anthem but roundly booed the playing of God Save The Queen which as an Ireland fan was good to see. England were really up for last night’s game probably were fresher after a fairly cushy qualification match while Scotland found it difficult to raise their game after that tough physical encounter against the Republic a few nights previously.

Got the feeling he was apologising for th ‘cheer up Gordon Strachan’ song as much as anything else.
