Continually learning Gordon Strachan

956

I remember Scotland-England games being huge events.  They were proper derby games, fired up by a balance – a vastly more resourceful England were in the ascendancy, but Scotland had more wins in the history books.  Despite the odd hiding we thought we could take them.

The Home International Championships probably ended at the right time, just before Scotland lunged into mediocrity.  No derby remains attractive if one side dreads the game coming round, while the other considers it a formality, but our former manager has given us reason for hope.

Gordon Strachan took time off from the game to invest in his stock of knowledge before becoming Celtic manager.  Despite an, erm, memorable opening week, Gordon blitzed Scottish football as Celtic manager.  He filled the boots of legend Martin O’Neill, and within 18 months eclipsed him by reaching what we used to refer to as ‘the next level in the Champions League’.

Despite going on to reach the knock-out stage of the Champions League again, and becoming our third manager to win three-in-a-row, Gordon stopped progressing.  His time at Celtic petered out, while the entire Middlesbrough episode was a nightmare.

Gordon, like Martin before him, looked as though the game had passed him by.  His resurgence at Scotland is evidence of his outstanding attribute – he’s a student of the game who continually learns.

Roy Hodgson has by far the better players, but never bet against Gordon.

Shaun’s goal on Friday

31 years ago in Sarawak, Malaysia, a midwife, Beatrice Lo, assisted in the delivery of a boy born to a Scottish family who lived in her community.  Beatrice got in touch with a common friend after wee Shaun’s goal on Friday, very proud of the kid she brought into the world.

  6. Looking at the crowd this evening at CP, I asked myself why are we told we must sit during games. If we do not then we can be removed by police orr stewards. This evening thousands were standing throughout the game and no action ws taken. Were FOCUS not there and what happened to the cameras. Surely the police must have deemed it possible that someone in the crowd was worth watching. Or have I got it all wrong. Perhaps OB does not apply to internationals.

Scotland was beaten by a better team, physically at least. We played some nice football but were let down by a couple of moments of panic. Sometimes we were cool in possession but suddenly we would over reach, rush or panic. There were 2 great goals, the last 2. In saying that, Scotland is now a football team. A real football team, one that goes for goals, wins, glory but has it own limitations that hold it back. I love the way we are trying to play. Still impressed by the keepers, R.Martin, Mulgrew, Maloney, Anya and especially by Robertson ( what a goal!) and Morrison ( what amazing quick feet). I also liked how May made himself noticed.

I apologise to all non Scotland fans for using we!

I see the seeds of what Ronny is trying to achieve is Scotland’s improvement. We are heading the same way and quicker than I thought was possible.

I took my mate who is a Hibbee and I think he was going more mental than me when Charlie scored. Well… Mibbe not.

The Irish Soldier Laddie was started in the Main Stand which we had a part of and spread right round the Celtic End.

    Great memory!

I posted here a while back about the wages some of the Spanish teams pay, Granada for example, I know one of their directors, he drinks in the same bar that I frequent in the village, anyways, about 1000 euros a week would be their average, he also reckoned that they were paying the norm apart from a handful, forget Barca and Real they are on a different planet.

I have no clue about the championship down south.

    The rest I agree 100%

Wouldnt take any of them at Celtic

  15. That’s why I know what I’m talking about and yous pure dinny :-)

Fletcher in particular would be the rock if or midfield with broony and johanson playing off him. Makes the mouth water so it does

  16. dr ramesh and the love potion on

Robertson is Celtic class but Izzy is back to his best and won’t be dislodged. Other than the keepers, who are all very decent, the only other players I’d take from the Scotland team would be Morrison, Maloney and possibly Anya. The Fletchers are good but have fitness problems.

    From the Telegraph:

    5. England supporters let themselves down

An incessant chant of “f— the IRA” rang around Celtic Park for a few minutes in the first half from the England fans. It was not coming from just a handful of them. It was even accompanied by the England band – and with a drum beating along to the unsavoury chanting – and is surely a matter for the Football Association to address. Presumably the supporters were directing their chant at Celtic and not Scotland fans. It was all distasteful and unnecessary. What were they thinking? It temporarily soured a superb atmosphere and was completely uncalled for.

  20. I would just like to say how proud I am of my son, travelling overnight from Aberdeen to London on a student bus, to attend the Free Education Demo in London tomorrow, then back up again on the same bus tomorrow night.

Chris Martin is made for Celtic. I discovered that fact two years ago. He is a cross of Sutton & Hartson. From a family of Tims too. :)
