Continually learning Gordon Strachan

956

I remember Scotland-England games being huge events.  They were proper derby games, fired up by a balance – a vastly more resourceful England were in the ascendancy, but Scotland had more wins in the history books.  Despite the odd hiding we thought we could take them.

The Home International Championships probably ended at the right time, just before Scotland lunged into mediocrity.  No derby remains attractive if one side dreads the game coming round, while the other considers it a formality, but our former manager has given us reason for hope.

Gordon Strachan took time off from the game to invest in his stock of knowledge before becoming Celtic manager.  Despite an, erm, memorable opening week, Gordon blitzed Scottish football as Celtic manager.  He filled the boots of legend Martin O’Neill, and within 18 months eclipsed him by reaching what we used to refer to as ‘the next level in the Champions League’.

Despite going on to reach the knock-out stage of the Champions League again, and becoming our third manager to win three-in-a-row, Gordon stopped progressing.  His time at Celtic petered out, while the entire Middlesbrough episode was a nightmare.

Gordon, like Martin before him, looked as though the game had passed him by.  His resurgence at Scotland is evidence of his outstanding attribute – he’s a student of the game who continually learns.

Roy Hodgson has by far the better players, but never bet against Gordon.

Shaun’s goal on Friday

31 years ago in Sarawak, Malaysia, a midwife, Beatrice Lo, assisted in the delivery of a boy born to a Scottish family who lived in her community.  Beatrice got in touch with a common friend after wee Shaun’s goal on Friday, very proud of the kid she brought into the world.

A lot of comment in the political demographic of the Scotland support ……informed comment or baseless BS ??

  4. i hope there’s no more scoring,

3 is high end of a respectable beating..

4 is that start of gubbed territory

    TET

Paddy Power offered an enhanced bet of 6/4 for both teams to score …nice price

  6. I’d just like all the Celtic players to return fully fit. All the Celtic (and ex) players have played well over the 2 games, which is very pleasing.

It was noticable Charlie moved to left CH, I’m sure Ronny knows enough about all the Celtic players.

I also think that Jason (like many have said) could be an Edgar Davids type in Central midfield, I don’t know though, as perhaps Man City agreed to the loan as long as he was played as a CH.

IMHO, we should save money and operate a boys club rather than Academy up to 19/20, and then try to pick up the Snodgrass’ , Fletchers, and dare I say it Naismith’s when they are 20/21 and have 40 / 50 first team appearances.

*we almost had the latter…the deid club were pink lint…we then came to an agreement with kilmasonic…then mcsleekit went doon tae Ayrshire and told him to hold on until Christmas and they’d be back….kilmasonic wurnae best pleased as they could have done with the money.

  8. Scotland were physically and mentally not at this game.

    Reason?

They’re not as good as England and the tactics were not right.

Think WGS got a bit carried away with recent very decent performances but his set up IMO played into the opponents hands.

This isi what happens when you think you are better than you are. Tonight should have been about spoling. Attempting to take the game to them in the first half after Friday was just plain daft. We should have let them come on to us and then in the Second half stepped it up. Once they saw how toothless we really are they just went through the motions.

Aye that was a good bet.

I lumped on england, all the hype etc, no chance scotland were going to win, imo obviously.

    Had they not won, that would have been my last ever bet, I emptied the pot on them, but someone is telling me it’s no over yet >}

Jude, the record from Coles is a lot more than 12 , I’ll try and dig it out from an old Celtic view but the buses were lined up back to the time capsule ( before it existed obviously!)

  12. Andrew Robertson looks like a Celtic full back. Great offensively, poor defensively. The Southampton full back Cline is immense. Well deserved win for the English. Beat us all over the park.

  13. It did hurt to hear the English fans taunting us with the little ditty “You’re British ’til you die”. Fair play to them for nailing it though. That is the choice we made.

Given England have ten times the population of Scotland I would suggest their record v Scotland in overall internationals is relatively poor.
