Covering Emilio, Ledley returns

507

Delighted Joe Ledley got on the score sheet twice yesterday.  As well as missing the influence of Wanyama, and Scott Brown on Champions League duty, Joe’s absence through injury has been felt.  He has been back a few weeks now but Neil Lennon has used him sparingly, putting a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of Beram Kayal and Charlie Mulgrew.  For me, Joe’s composure and running deserves place in the team.

Ross County have dropped like a stone recently, even when you consider their abandoned matches, but they successfully pressed high up the field for long periods of the game.  When Celtic do this in Europe we are always concerned about opposing teams passing through us with speed.  It was a bit concerning that we could not do the same to County.

The most pleasing aspect of the game was the performance of Emilio Izaguirre.  Neil Lennon went on record in the summer to say he needed cover for left back, which is still the case, but at the time ‘cover’ was interpreted in places for an admission that Emilio’s form was not what it once was.

We are incredibly strong at right back, with internationals Adam Matthews and Mikel Lustig vying for the position, while Nigeria’s right back, Efe Ambrose, occupies a different position at Celtic, but Emilio has no obvious left-footed cover.

Following the loss of St John Doyle, George Ryan, Lennybhoy sent £1534.30 on your behalf to the Mini St John Doyle Fund, now officially launched as Sean’s Trust.  George’s wife, Linda, responded with this message:

“George’s fantastic friends at Celtic Quick News have this evening donated £1,534.30 into the account for our charity Sean’s Trust. This money has been raised since George’s death on 5 October. Also they paid for 4 seats at Celtic Park for the family to attend the Ajax game, and sent beautiful floral tributes.

“Most of the supporters on CQN had never met George in person. Paul Brennan from CQN visited me after George’s death and he said ‘It takes a lifetime to make a Celtic Man like George’ What a beautiful tribute. We are grateful for the immense effort you have all made in memory of George. We will never forget you x.”

There are never any real compensations on occasions of such loss, but your efforts connected with, and supported, a family, at a time when that was as much as anyone could do for them.

Thank you to everyone who participated, especially Lennybhoy, for picking up the ball.

I remember taking a young lady to Celtic Park on a cold November night in the late 80’s to see us playing Dundee.

We stood on the terracing– and technically she was my employee! I thought a wee night out at the fitba would be good for her — but almost 25 years later she still doesn’t really get it when me and all the kids head off to Celtic Park.

Anyway, the following day I was accosted in the nicest possible terms by a Sheriff Clerk called Neil McGinley at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

” Jim!” says the bold Neil ” A quiet word to the wise! Yon wee Lassie looked frozen on the terracing last night! You could at least have given her a hug!”

    A hug?

Seeing we were a secret item at the time she would have slapped me!

If I tried it today– she would still slap me!

Amsterdam – The Battle for the Truth

Lazy Journalism. The accusation levelled against the MSM by Celtic Quick News just under 10 years ago when Paul Brennan set up the blog. After Celtic fans were attacked in Amsterdam these very same journalists couldn’t help themselves – Jackson on the radio equating the trouble in Amsterdam to riots in Manchester when Rangers fans went on the rampage. Spiers on Twitter condemning the Celtic fans as the trouble-makers before he was aware of any facts. As the truth emerged on social media and on blogs like CQN it seemed that none of these lazy journalists had the stomach to come out and state exactly what had happened. CQN decided if they wouldn’t tell the story of what really happened in Amsterdam then we would spend some time ourselves finding out. Not just stating our opinion – as Spiers and Jackson had done – but carry out some good old fashioned proper journalism. Here is what actually happened in Amsterdam…(see CQN Magazine out Tuesday)

Can someone confirm for me that Ledley was booked after his second goal on Saturday but the Ross County player, who ran up to and then past the Celtic support, wasn’t?

I ended up putting on a tammie – the one my dad wore to Milan FFS- and she grabbed it off me saying I was giving her a showing up. And then sat on the damn thing for the rest of the match. No coarse comments at the back there.

  13. Joe Ledley appears to be managing his career well. He came to Celtic on a Bosman, probably with a healthy signing on fee, without incurring the wrath of the Cardiff fans who still appear to have a lot of time for him. He has now put himself in a position to make another financially lucrative Bosman move, probably to the Premiership, having served Celtic well. I for one would wish him well if he does decide to move on.

  17. I was sitting at the Cafe table tapping my fingers anxiously, feeling excited yet apprehensive. The moderate Lanarkshire breeze didn’t seem to calm me down one bit. As I sat gazing at the edge of the pavement, where the stank meets the rain, I felt a stir at the table. It was you, J*******. My heart was thumping so fast….. My ears and cheeks were flushing red, I believe. You just smiled at me and with the sweetest voice of the heavens said “Hi!” I smiled back sheepishly, and thanked you for coming.

The crystal clear Carmyle Clyde yards away from us, it couldn’t match the innocent look in your big blue eyes. I was a bag of nerves at that time when you suggested flipping through the menu. I agreed readily, with relief. You were dressed casually that day, but it did not undermine your beauty one bit. You were wearing a white t-shirt with the words Rod the Mod in bold red.

A matching ‘Wrangler’ jacket and tight fit jeans. You had no idea how cute you were! My heart was leaping with joy when you said I looked smart with my Celtic Away top. I mentioned that I really like the way your nice blonde hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail with that simple black clip and you beamed with that lovely look on your face. I was certainly at the right place at the right time, with the right girl of my life. We ordered our chips from the friendly waitress and the day seemed so perfect that I could feel my heart wanting to burst into a song as I slowly eased into comfort of being with you.

I’ll never forget how your face fell, when I said we were at home, and McGarvey was fit as I showed you two tickets for Celtic v St Mirren.

  18. BRT&H @ 08:15,

    Thanks –

“So the whole thing is moving, and all the football clubs and associations should be very much aware of that and the opportunities it offers such as the recent SPFL deal for China.”

Very true, with our diaspora you must feel that Celtic are in a prime position to take advantage.

Will catch Micheal Grant’s piece and Winning Captain’s expose on Amsterdam.

“…. the only problem I have with BT Sport is I enjoy this free with Virgin XL package, I suspect this may well end soon now they have revenue to generate and something attractive to offer. Still, its a price to pay to break the BSkyB stranglehold.”

It will be interesting how the packages will turn out – Virgin Media are direct competitors of BT in the Broadband, Telephony market, I’m sure you are right BT Sports are not going to offer their UEFA package free through Virgin however the SKY Sports is quite an expensive add-on, even with a XL package.

Breaking the BSkyB Monopoly has got to be good.

    Parkheadcumsalford @ 08:49,

“I noticed that comment on the BBC news on Saturday evening. Typical BBC arrogance. Why can’t Scottish viewers demand that their BBC give proportionately as much money to the SPFL??”

This is a huge bug-bear of mine, with the exception of Saturday afternoon results show (I’m convinced BBC Scotland get this to ensure the limited time available to Final Score is not “wasted” reporting Scottish Football) and Sportscene tucked away on a Sunday Evening with the briefest of highlights and minimal analysis, there is little scheduled Scottish Football on BBC Scotland.

We have Football Focus which purports to cover British Football but is 80% + is Premiership.

The various MOTD programmes don’t even pretend not to be Premiership Programmes yet provides by far the most scheduled hours of Football coverage each week on BBC Scotland – ridiculous.

    Hail Hail

  19. CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever on

I lazed about yesterday watching hours of football – EPL in the afternoon – SPFL in the evening.

Celtic basically need to get out of Scottish football. This league is a sentence – no wonder folk leave at first opportunity. I forgive Lenny, the Board, the players for all disappointments in Europe – how the hell they get there is a mystery, given the standard they are expected to play week in week out.

I know folk have strong feelings about The Resolution, etc but to be honest – all I want to hear from Lawwell is what he has been doing, what he is doing and what he intends to do to get us out of Scottish football.

Leave the Huns to SPFL in a couple of years time. I want away from Scottish football – we dont need it, they don’t want us. We are an top EPL standard club. We are Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Man Utd much more than we are Motherwell, Hibs, Partick Thistle or the Huns.

So all I want to hear is strategy for getting out.

  23. Nice to see the Sevco share price starting to nose dive (45.5p this moring, 54p a month ago).

    Meanwhile…

The chairman of a brand new Glasgow football club had the task of hiring a CEO.

After sorting through a stack of resumes he found four people who were equally qualified. He decided to call the four in and ask them just one question. Their answer would determine which of them would get the job.

The day came and as the four sat around the boardroom table, the chairman asked, ‘What is the fastest thing you know of?’

The first candidate replied, ‘A thought.’ It just pops into your head. There’s no warning.’

‘That’s very good!’ replied the chairman. ‘And, now you sir?’, he asked the second candidate.

‘Hmmm…let me see ‘A blink! It comes and goes and you don’t know that it ever happened. A blink is the fastest thing I know of.’

‘Excellent!’ said the chairman. ‘The blink of an eye, that’s a very popular cliché for speed.’ He then turned to the third candidate, who was contemplating his reply.

‘Well, when I step out of the house, on the wall there’s a light switch. When I flip that switch, the light on the garage comes on in less than an instant. ‘Aye, turning on a lght is the fastest thing I can think of’.

The chairman was very impressed with the third answer and thought he had found his man. ‘It’s hard to beat the speed of light,’ he said.

Turning to Bamber, the fourth and final candidate, the chairman posed the same question.

Bamber replied, ‘After hearing the previous three answers, it’s obvious to me that the fastest thing is dia-, diar-, eh, liquidation.’

‘WHAT!?’ said the chairman, stunned to hear that word in the boardroom.

‘It’s obvious’ said Bamber. ‘You see, the other night I was out and I must’ve had a really bad curry or something. Anyway next morning I wasn’t feeling so good, and I ran to the bathroom, but before I could think, blink, or turn on the light, the damage was done: aye, liquidation must be the fastest thing!’

  24. Chatted to my brother ( Gordon ) over the weekend about his experience in Amsterdam, have read all the reports I can plus inevitably watched all the youtube clips.

This very short story has nothing to do with the above but is rather a commentary on the difference in passion generated for Celtic Football Club compared to others. Years of living in London ought to have softened my amazement at overhearing a simple conversation in a restaurant in Coventry Garden last night.

Two clearly out of town couples sitting immediately behind me fell into conversation after their respective meals. Perfectly ordinary folk having a perfectly ordinary about their weekend in London. How it has changed, the price of property, theatre etc. They spent a lot of time discussing dog ownership and passing smart phone photographs of their dogs across to one another. Then the conversation turned to football.

I could hear the two wives/partners collectively sigh. One wife to the other- my man is a Manchester United fanatic. He just loves the club. The other husband/partner then asked if he had seen the game this afternoon ( Man U v Arsenal ). He replied that he had not then , at least for me jaw droppingly, asked who Man U were playing- and only when told it was Arsenal asked the result.

I simply could not imagine similar circumstances involving a Celtic man described by his wife/ partner as a fanatic. Arguably that game might prove to be pivotal in Man Us season but my man was completely unaware. It does amuse and irk me in equal proportion.

Whilst I am on a run and on subject then a week ago I was at a dinner party in Marylebone and the conversation turned to football. It was a real mixed group including some Aussies but the most knowledgable ( and most vocal ) Englishman, a Lloyd’s broker, advised the table how he had a soft spot for Celtic but if they gained entry to the EPL he saw them as a Crystal Palace level.

Back at Celtic I thought a reasonable article today from Michael Grant but suspect the real story has yet to emerge. The trouble was clearly seized upon gleefully by the people who hate all things Celtic but as the story ( so far ) has unfolded the observations are being diluted to the point where serious littering is now on the agenda.
