Covering Emilio, Ledley returns

507

Delighted Joe Ledley got on the score sheet twice yesterday.  As well as missing the influence of Wanyama, and Scott Brown on Champions League duty, Joe’s absence through injury has been felt.  He has been back a few weeks now but Neil Lennon has used him sparingly, putting a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of Beram Kayal and Charlie Mulgrew.  For me, Joe’s composure and running deserves place in the team.

Ross County have dropped like a stone recently, even when you consider their abandoned matches, but they successfully pressed high up the field for long periods of the game.  When Celtic do this in Europe we are always concerned about opposing teams passing through us with speed.  It was a bit concerning that we could not do the same to County.

The most pleasing aspect of the game was the performance of Emilio Izaguirre.  Neil Lennon went on record in the summer to say he needed cover for left back, which is still the case, but at the time ‘cover’ was interpreted in places for an admission that Emilio’s form was not what it once was.

We are incredibly strong at right back, with internationals Adam Matthews and Mikel Lustig vying for the position, while Nigeria’s right back, Efe Ambrose, occupies a different position at Celtic, but Emilio has no obvious left-footed cover.

Following the loss of St John Doyle, George Ryan, Lennybhoy sent £1534.30 on your behalf to the Mini St John Doyle Fund, now officially launched as Sean’s Trust.  George’s wife, Linda, responded with this message:

“George’s fantastic friends at Celtic Quick News have this evening donated £1,534.30 into the account for our charity Sean’s Trust. This money has been raised since George’s death on 5 October. Also they paid for 4 seats at Celtic Park for the family to attend the Ajax game, and sent beautiful floral tributes.

“Most of the supporters on CQN had never met George in person. Paul Brennan from CQN visited me after George’s death and he said ‘It takes a lifetime to make a Celtic Man like George’ What a beautiful tribute. We are grateful for the immense effort you have all made in memory of George. We will never forget you x.”

There are never any real compensations on occasions of such loss, but your efforts connected with, and supported, a family, at a time when that was as much as anyone could do for them.

Thank you to everyone who participated, especially Lennybhoy, for picking up the ball.

  2. Buongiorno !

Just watched all of yesterday’s Chievo 0 ————Milan 0

Milan were dire . I can’t remember there being a worse Milan team..

This morning’s media is full of Milan in crisis stories. They are in deep doo on and off the pitch. Yesterday saw the 3 k strong away support booing them constantly for the last 10 minutes. Some pundits are claiming that Allegri has offered to walk..

They are there for the taking !

  3. SFTB,

Sorry but your answers to my post about a striker, are ones I just cant let go.You mention a lot of things.”We negotiated 3 very tricky qualifiers. An Irish part time team,Elfsborg, real minnows, and a team that we really should have murdered,Karagandy. You mention “Our kids inheritance”We nearly threw that away by struggling to qualify for the CL this season, through bad planning and transfer buisness. We still had time to sign a striker after it was blatantly obvious in the Elfsborg game that we were lacking. We did not.We went into the CL without a regular goalscorer.

You say Finnbogason is playing in a minnows league!!!!!The Eredivisie? If thats minnows, god help us.At the moment Alfie has scored 14 in 15 starts. The Ajax guy has scored 6 in 16 starts.Last year Alfie scored41 in 32 starts.Dont think it would be a giant leap of faith to think playing in our league with us he would do much worse.

You say we are doing very well this season. In almost every game we have been quite poor.We are winning, but by god we should be.We struggle to score goals most weeks.Even on Saturday oour strikers again failed to score.

The “Going rate for Finnbogason was £5 million.A pittance for a guy with his record over the past 3 years. If other teams prefer to spend £20 million plus on strikers, that is no concern of ours. They spend that on CHs yet we picked up VVD for a song.

Our “Very good season”could go down in flames shortly. We may not even make the Europa. Now signing a striker may not have altered this fact, but it would certainly have improved our chances of doing so.

With the CL money being increased to almost double in 2015,I would expect, even demand our board make sure that we are fully prepared in future. No half assed panic signings a week before our first game.We have the basis of a very good team.Lets give it a cutting edge and stop all this penny pinching. We have the greatest chance in our history to build a dynasty, instead of which we are gambling with it.

I hear similar stuff all the time in England… Whilst watching a Celtic game in O’Neils I overheard a Chelsea “fan” in a Chelsea top moaning about Chec wearing that “ridiculous hat thing” only to be informed it was because he had fractured his skull..

  5. Regarding the james mcclean story

He had written the ones you expect most from always the ones that let you down ..

Then day later wrote something like we all know what today is and thanks for your support, my stance is the same as last year and always will be.

Wigan chairman dave whelan was one who came up with the minute silence idea for thatcher. Be interesting to see what devlops here.

Fair play to james mcclean, just wish others would show him bit of support.

  6. Enjoyed our performance at the weekend, they kept a high tempo and never stood still which i’d like to see more of.we should be battering teams like this most weeks comprehensively..not sure about one striker but horses for courses..the attitude of just turning up and going through the motions is an insult to our paying support..keep it going lenny hh

  7. My view on ross county game

I thought we were awful in the first half and the team selection was very poor.. Biton mulgrew and ledley in my view isn’t great formula. I thought izzy was very poor first half.. Especially his crossing.

Rogic should have started ahead of mulgrew .

Pukki did decent but could have done with a striker beside him or even rogic closer to him from the start.

Fisher looks great player which is why we will listen to offers for either matthews or lustig in the summer. Dont know why neil has never given matthews a run of games at left back after his barca disply and izzys up an down form.

  8. Turkeysbhoy

totally agreed on your points..through by the skin of our teeth..what a disaster it would have been if we didnt make the groups..players up for sale to cover a mistake that shouldnt have occured..i hope they learn from this hh

It’s all academic as we never put the bid in but I genuinely don’t believe that Finnbogasson would have come. He’s clearly destined for one the ‘big leagues’ probably next season. So why would he take what many would consider to be a backwards move in terms of the league?

Yes he’d have got a chance to show his form in the CL, however that may have worked to his detriment if he was starved of service.

Performing as he is in the The Netherlands will be catching more eyes than a similar, or better performance in the SPFL.

Once we had our bid in, I’m fairly certain we’d have had our feelers out as to whether it was worth raising it.

As I said it’s academic but I think the cost of VvD @ £2.6M, which is more than we’ve spent on a defender for quite a while, shows we are willing to up the bar for the right target.

    I’m astounded at those comments.

Biton will need games and looked good to me. Ledley scored two goals.

Rogic ahead of Mulgrew? Charlie has been one of our most consistent performers this season.

Matthews at Left Back? The Bhoy is never fit. I can’t remember any player in our history who has the physio treating them more than Matthews. The Bhoy has to get fit first.

You did see we won 4-1 right?

SFTB & TurkeyBhoy, good to see 2 passionate Celtic fans “keyboard jousting”. Both have very good points buy I agree we should have bought Alfie and could still if we were paying up front. Heerenveen are now mid table and he is still scoring so they might be happy to cash in come Jan who knows! He lived in Edinburgh so knows Scotland…

We imo showed a lack of ambition when it came to signing a striker of note (good stats) have we not learned that this is an area where we shouldn’t be scrimping on, you get what you pay for and Pukki & Balde would have gone a long way to paying for him.

  12. Proudbhoy

you must have been watching a different game from me..celtic pushed and moved the ball better than i’ve seen for weeks..even better in the second half..ross co. are a hard team to break down at home,we’ve had better teams on the park and got heehaw..lenny called it perfect for this one imho hh

The money available to each competing club is set to more than double under the new terms.

Who knows, maybe we’ll be in a position to sign a striker if it happens.

  19. I am assuming that Finbogasson`s team don`t face packed defences every week. I haven`t got a clue as to whether or not he would be so prolific with us. I leave that to the Celtic management/Scouting team to decide. They are in a far better position to make an accurate judgement tham I am.

From what I can gather, the TV money for each competing team would double.

  21. Cut & Paste of the significant parts of Matt Lawton and Charles Sale’s article in this morning’s Mail Online:

The £897 million deal that saw BT Sport snatch the Champions League from Sky and ITV will change the landscape of the game.

With the money for competing in the Champions League set to double to around £20m per club per season from 2015, never will it have been more important to finish in the top four of the Barclays Premier League.

But for the first time, qualification for the Europa League will also come with significant financial rewards……….

‘It’s a mindblowing deal,’ said Simon Johnson, former director of corporate affairs at the FA and now a sports rights specialist and consultant to law firm Charles Russell.

‘The money involved obviously makes it all the more important to qualify for the Champions League.

But the really interesting bit for me is the fact that clubs are going to earn proper income from the Europa League. It won’t compare to the Champions League money but for the first time it will actually be financially worthwhile.’

BT promised to promote the Europa League on Champions League nights and to make the final of both tournaments free-to-air across all platforms, as well as one game involving each English club (assume Scotland also)

First team players have been given 2 days off.

Milan are 10th in Serie A / one of a group of 4 teams with 13 points, 19 points off top spot and 4 points off a relegation spot.. Milan have played 6 Serie A away games. They have yet to win one, 3 draws, 3 defeats..Their defence is dire.
