CQN 11 Knocking it out the park

1030

Where to start on last night’s CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner?  We knocked it out the park.  Hundreds came, thousands of pounds were raised, enough to help Mary’s Meals build a kitchen for a thousand more school kids in Malawi, and a £5,000 donation to Lisa Hague’s 30k Challenge for Marie Curie Challenge for Cancer Care.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along and made the night so special, especially those who stepped forward and helped Mary’s Meals and Lisa’s Challenge.  The night could not have happened without Phil Agnew’s experience, work and charm.  He is a credit to everything good about the Celtic support.

Special thanks to Tom Boyd, John Hughes, Joe Miller and Tommy Coyne, who added range to the night at the Q&A session.  Thanks to Stuart Armstrong, who dropped in to spend an hour with us, and share some of his undisguised joy at being a Celtic player.

Archie Macpherson spoke about the world Jock Stein blew apart when he arrived at Celtic 50 years ago this week.  Archie’s range on Scottish football is peerless.  He became a friend and confidant of Jock, and gave us an insight into the extraordinary man.

No St Patrick’s Night would be complete without great music and for that our thanks to Patricia Ferns and Liam McGrandles, and a special mention those who put their shoulder to the wheel on the night, especially Geo from Biglens and the great hospitality staff at Celtic.

I’ve many people to catch up with but I’m planning to sleep for the next several days.  Cup Final apart.

If all weekends were like this weekend………
If all gatherings were like Celtic gatherings……….

  1. Would love to just see the game today never mind be getting ready to head to it

Safe journey everyone esp those travelling from afar.. make some noise and back the bhoys.

Celtic celtic thats the team for me

  2. Anybody get to the ABC (think thats what its called ) and see damien dempsey and the wakes playing ?

Would have been a great concert..anyone who hasnt seen damo live try and do. Amazing performer.. modern day luke kelly and blasts a few Luke classics.

  3. Happy Mother’s Day to all CQN mothers and to all those who like my own will be celebrating it in the Eternal Paradise. You are still the most important people in our lives.

Hope for a great day at Hampden to add to the many times since the 1950s that I have celebrated winning cups there. HH

  4. By my reckoning United will miss Cifti too much.

He has really impressed me and i thought he was immense for them in the Scottish Cup tie.

What a ‘shift he’ put in.

I think our defence will have a much easier time without having to try to cope with him!

Would definitely like to see him follow his 2 former teamates down here.

  5. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Ronny and John are building a young team with lots of stamina to play high tempo pressing football. Why then would we be interested in a 34 year old on loan for part of next season ? Steven Gerrard is building his pension pot and is way past his best keep the money Celtic and use it on young talent we dont need Gerrard . H.H.

  6. Happy Mothers Day to my auld Ma who is in New York and will be for the next few days.

Her fella – a Hibee – said we’ll find a pub to watch the final in as I drove them to the airport at 4am yesterday. Knowing they had pre-booked some touristy stuff today I had to break the bad news that EST was 4 hours behind and that the game would be kicking off when he was on a ferry :) There was a long silence and then a burst of anger from my old dear…. still lucky buggers got an upgrade for their flight so I think that made up for it.

Anyway can’t wait to take my wee Bhoy to his 2nd League Cup Final. Fingers crossed it’s nothing like the last one against Killie!

Looking forward to seeing Broonie lead the team out and lift the trophy. One of the fittest and most athletic players so the fact he had a few sherberts 4 nights ago is of no consequence. Heaven forbid a young man has a few drinks and then enjoys a pre-planned day off before going to training the next day. In doing so he broke no club rules and therefore has not been publicly or privately disciplined. Other cases are different, returning late from a planned break is of course a breach of club rules. The fact that one sanctamonius bore isn’t able to discern the difference is beside the point.

To all going to Hampdump, enjoy, to all watching on TV around the world enjoy and here’s to the first part of a treble. We are a special football club win lose or draw

Keep the Faith and Hail Hail

  7. Good morning CQN…

Posted somethings on the last thread about CQN11 but want to record my thoughts on the CQN11 thread.

Paul67 my thanks are not enough but thank you.

I had a fantastic night, thank you to each and everyone of you, you made me happy by coming along and supporting Mary’s Meals in Malawi. As well as supporting Lisa’s Marie Curie’s Cancer challenge.

You are too many to mention but you know who you are, Legends each and every one of you.

I am not superstitious but Friday 13th March 2015 will live in my memory forever.

I carried on the festivities in the KOSC Coatbridge and then to Bed at 22:00, missed Sipsini’s phone call, sorry mate.

What a weekend, soon to be topped off with lifting the Cup.

Thank you and God Bless you all.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  8. Today I will attend my 9th league cup final.

Not had a great record so far in finals that I’ve attended personally – just 3 wins.

    1969-70: beat St Johnstone 1 – 0 (73,067)

    1970–71: lost to Rangers 1 – 0 (106,263)

    1971–72: lost to Partick Thistle 4 – 1 (62,740)

    1972–73: beat Hibs 2 – 1 (71,696)

    1973–74: lost to Dundee 1 – 0 (27,924)

1994–95: lost to Raith Rovers on penalties after a 2 – 2 (AET) draw. (45,384 at Ibrox)

    2000–01: beat Kilmarnock 3 – 0 (48,830)

    2011–12: lost to Kilmarnock 1 – 0 (49,572)

  9. Jobo that’s pretty similar to our record overall….lost far too many finals.

    I have been to

    1997-98: Beat Dundee Utd 3-0

    1999-00: Beat Aberdeen 2-0

    2000-01: Beat Kilmarnock 3-0

    2002-03: Lost to Huns 2-1

2005-06: Jinky final beat Pars 3-0, was with my Da so a special one for me

2011-12: Lost to Killie 1-0 – my sons first final

so 4-2 for me on the win/loss ratio

  10. Thought I would have a quick look across on Wallow Wallow to see how the horde were taking yet another drop of points.

Saw a thread about rumours of Steven Gerard joining us in the MLS close season. Amongst the usual bile comments there was this gem –

“I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to play in a league where the champions are crowned on the first day of the season.’

Took a lot of self control to stop myself getting banned by posting that he could join Rangers where there would never ever be such a worry.

    Morning hoops.

    Happy mothers/cup final day..

A brilliant illustration of why basing your voting intentions on your choice of football team is a path fraught with difficulty.

    From Renfrewshire24

SNP Renfrewshire South candidate under pressure to quit after rants

The SNP candidate who will stand against Douglas Alexander in the upcoming General Elections has came under fire after she has been seen in a video saying she would like to “put the nut” on Labour Councillors.

Politics student Mhairi Black is on course to take shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander’s seat as MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South according to latest polls.

She also condemned No voters as “gullible”, “selfish” and called Celtic fans “scum” and said “I f*****g hate Celtic” at a rally.

    Mhari Black

She made the series of controversial remarks at the Hope Over Fear rally held in George Square after the referendum vote showed Scots backed the Union.

Footage of the rally, on the 12th October after Scotland voted to stay in the Union, Black said she had wanted to headbutt Labour opponents when she learned the Yes side had lost.

She said: “I was actually at the count in Renfrewshire with my dad and as the vote was coming in, the way the hall was laid out we had to walk past all these fat cat Labour councillors goading us, clapping sarcastically, saying ‘better luck next time’ or ‘hard lines’.

“It took everything, every fibre in my being, not to put the nut in one of them.”

Black was recently selected as the SNP candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire South.

Speaking on her Facebook page Mhairi said she was “Absolutely honoured to have been selected as the SNP candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire South.

“Thank you for all the support and kind words that have been offered throughout the selection process. You can be rest assured I will give this my all – Let’s do it!”

So far declared for the Paisley and Renfrewshire South seat are Douglas Alexander (Labour), Mhairi Black (SNP), Sandra Webster (Scottish Socialist)

    Tenth final for me,four wins.

Started wi Thistle in 1971. My first ever time watching Celtic lose,in my fifth season. I still take every defeat as a personal insult.

  21. Mass at 10 in the Sacred Heart Cowie, where I will light a wee candle for all Mothers, then Pop up to visit my own

Will be watching on the tele, cause I ain’t giving the SFA a penny – my choice

So to all Tims, let’s enjoy our Day

Jobo – this is the day, this is the day, that the Lord has made . . . .

We will rejoice and be glad in it

    Hail Hail

  22. Looking forward to a victory today as we chase a treble.

Exciting end to the season coming up.

On a negative note. Alfie you are a troll.

Seriously, who gives a hoot what Murdoch’s rag says. Everyone with a brain cell knows it done to create a bit of negativity on cup final week and yet on cup final morning you bring it up again.

Let’s enjoy the occasion and hope for a Celtic victory. It’s 2.0 to the hoops for me with Virgil and Broonie scoring.

  23. bmcuwp

THAT 71 Final was my 1st as well.

Only 4 years old yet it is etched in my mind.

  24. Today will be my 16th LC final, only 6 victories in the previous 15 I’ve been to. Been to every once since we lost 2-1 to Aberdeen (which cost us a treble) in 76-77

  25. Skyislandfill I do agree that, generally, basing your voting intentions on supporting a football team is silly. I say generally because in Scotland its a little different. And I used to believe that celtic was more of a cause than a football club. I say used to because that sadly is changing(and not for the better).

I’m not in the least bit surprised about those comments from an SNP candidate. Scotland is a racist country and the racists want to rule thei own we backwater in the way they see fit.

But perhaps the single most disappointing aspect of the post referendum scotland is the bullying contempt that yes voters have both to democracy and to those who voted no. This contempt is based on attempting to scare no voters to vote yes the next time. It’s a tactic used in different parts of the world. I’m just surprised that (as yet) no violence has accompanied it.

And of course, buried deep in that approach are the seeds of the nationalists downfall. Not a single bit of soul searching or analysis of why the vote was lost has been done. So the same mistakes will be made again. The belief that bullying and intimidation will will win is all it takes they seem to think.

In the meantime the scottish government appears emboldened by their defeat and is now redoubling their efforts to criminalise it’s citizens at every turn. I was listening to Clyde yesterday and every second advert is from the scottish government or some quasi NGOS. My favourite yesterday was the one threatening to arrest you for leaving your car engine on. Is that really what we are about.

The SNPs sneering contempt for its citizens is laid out everywhere. The police are out of control and share that contempt.

Smear campaigns against any labour politician are everywhere.

The election will be what it will be, by returning a majority of SNP government we will see the morningside curtain twitchers attack the rest of scottish society. And all this guff about a fairer Scottish society? Well then raise the taxes both council and income tax and then we shall see.

Anyway I guess we get what we deserve, in the end.

I imagine it’s all been said about CQN11 such was the night, it’s actually quite difficult to put into words.

The only thing you can do is say thanks to the brilliant organisers that got you in, all the special Celtic supporters that were there, on a scale of Jobo Baldie to Lisa Hague.

The atmosphere was electric, but when the Celtic supporters where bidding for charity it was my humbling highlight.

A certain person on stage said ‘that since we joined Celtic we have become better people’.

Brother Walfrid would have been so proud of CQN.
