CQN 11 Knocking it out the park

1030

Where to start on last night’s CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner?  We knocked it out the park.  Hundreds came, thousands of pounds were raised, enough to help Mary’s Meals build a kitchen for a thousand more school kids in Malawi, and a £5,000 donation to Lisa Hague’s 30k Challenge for Marie Curie Challenge for Cancer Care.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along and made the night so special, especially those who stepped forward and helped Mary’s Meals and Lisa’s Challenge.  The night could not have happened without Phil Agnew’s experience, work and charm.  He is a credit to everything good about the Celtic support.

Special thanks to Tom Boyd, John Hughes, Joe Miller and Tommy Coyne, who added range to the night at the Q&A session.  Thanks to Stuart Armstrong, who dropped in to spend an hour with us, and share some of his undisguised joy at being a Celtic player.

Archie Macpherson spoke about the world Jock Stein blew apart when he arrived at Celtic 50 years ago this week.  Archie’s range on Scottish football is peerless.  He became a friend and confidant of Jock, and gave us an insight into the extraordinary man.

No St Patrick’s Night would be complete without great music and for that our thanks to Patricia Ferns and Liam McGrandles, and a special mention those who put their shoulder to the wheel on the night, especially Geo from Biglens and the great hospitality staff at Celtic.

I’ve many people to catch up with but I’m planning to sleep for the next several days.  Cup Final apart.

If all weekends were like this weekend………
If all gatherings were like Celtic gatherings……….

Gretna F.C. 2008 (commonly referred to as Gretna 2008 and colloquially as Gretna) is a football club from the town of Gretna. It was founded in 2008 after the bankruptcy and demise of Gretna F.C., which had existed since 1946. Gretna 2008 is not a direct continuation of the old club, being under a completely different management and set-up;[1] the club trades under the name Gretna FC 2008 Ltd to avoid confusion with the old Gretna.

    Record-breaking promotion successes

Backed by multi-millionaire businessman Brooks Milseon – Gretna’s very own ‘mini-Abramovich’ – the side re-wrote the history books en route to the Third Division championship in 2004/05.

Under the tutorship of manager Rowan Alexander, the club broke Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s winning run of 11 by two victories and striker Kenny Deuchar – who would prove to be an integral player in side’s rise – hit an incredible 41 goals that season to smash the previous record.

Having scored 130 goals – just one short of the British league record – the side romped to the earliest promotion the League had witnessed, with a win against Cowdenbeath on 5th March. Thanks to the cash of Mr Mileson, players of Premier League quality strutted their stuff at Raydale Park as Gretna won the League at a canter with 98 points.

The following season, things just got better for the Black and Whites as they took the Second Division by storm. The side secured their second successive Championship and took more records, claiming the fastest promotion from the Division once more as they finished 18 points clear of second place Morton.

However, the 2005/06 season will be remembered most fondly for Gretna’s fantastic Tennent’s Scottish Cup run. The side who had been playing non-league football in England just four seasons earlier walked out in the Cup final in front of over 51,000 people at Hampden Park to face Premier League outfit Hearts.

The first ever Second Division side to reach the final equalised to level the score at 1-1 but the Edinburgh side eventually won 4-2 on penalties. But all was not lost for Gretna as Hearts’ Champions league qualification saw them through to the UEFA Cup.

The incredible journey for the Borders club saw their first ever European tie end in disappointment as Derry City went through in the Second Qualifying round 7-3 on aggregate. Nevertheless, the 2006/07 proved to be a landmark season for Gretna, as they became the first British club to achieve three successive promotions.

A fantastic season ended in joy as on the final day of the season Gretna edged out rivals St Johnstone to win the title. The Black and Whites i

The United fans will be having a minutes applause in the third minute to remember Frank Kopel and to both highlight and bring about a change in the way dementia sufferers are cared for in Scotland. Younger Dementia sufferers are excluded from much of the help available to older folk.

The action has been organised by the fan community group United for All, who will unfurl a banner on Sunday at Hampden urging action from the Scottish Government who’ve so far failed to deliver changes to the law.

    ——————–

I hope someone will “bump” this every page or so.

  11. Good morning and a Happy Mothers’ Day – I wish mine was still here !

Looking forward to seeing Kris playing on Sunday, although I detest going to Hampden (it looked better as an athletics arena).

Not so chuffed to see Scott Brown starting, although he has an enormous influence on our team.

I am not being ‘holier than thou’, however the state of him, lying on the ground, outside a strip club in the early hours of Thursday morning is mind-boggling.

Yes of course everyone is due some private time – but at this stage of the season, with so many important games coming one after another, our captain and highest-paid player should be having just that – private time.

I wonder what the parents of the little boy/girl mascot who walks out on to the Hampden pitch holding his hand will be thinking.

Scott Brown is not a wee boy, he is a mature sportsman earning by all accounts, over £1 million per year – surely he can find more discreet ways of spending his free time – others do!

Ronny has ‘nailed his colours to the mast’ with regard to fitness, eating habits (this must include drinking) and personal discipline. He says he wants a 24 hour athlete, and it must be said that the fitness of the team is a credit to him. He dropped Stokes for two matches for returning late for training, after a break in Ireland, without concern for the consequences of it on the team’s performance.

Stoke’s case could have been dealt with quietly and kept ‘in house’ – but it wasn’t, Ronny was OK to comment on it publicly.

So why, apparently, is the Scott Brown fiasco different – no comment, and no exclusion from the team?

Not to discipline Brown will mean one of the following for Ronny:

    1) Winning the League Cup and discarding of his publicly stated principles.

    2) Losing the League Cup and discarding of his publicly stated principles.

I believe that Ronny will lose his authority and the respect of other players at the club, now and in future – first in line will surely be Anthony Stokes.

He will in effect be saying to the players – ” you must be 24 hour athletes BUT you can get drunk and make an exhibition of yourself and the club, one night a week.

Those Celtic fans, and the majority on here, who are attempting to ‘defend the indefensible’ seem to be blaming the “rotten Sun” – I have no respect for that newspaper, however why manufacture ‘bullets’ for it to ‘fire’.

Brown’s attitude is much to be worried about – he seems to be totally self-obsessed. During the Barcelona CL game, we were holding our own at 0-0, when he chose to ‘kick-out’ at Neymar on the ground, knowing that there would be around six cameras focussed on the incident – that effectively ruined our chances in that game, which we lost narrowly 1-0, and the subsequent two games when he was banned.

I await the ‘shrieking clique’ descending upon me and calling me a hun – however I have given my honest opinion.

Winning at any cost, whether that be religious discrimination, or, cheating the tax man, is what the residents of Ibrox do, and have always done – let’s not go down that road – discipline Scott Brown and leave him out the team.

  12. Gerryfaethebrig on

Scott Brown will be man of the match today and hopefully we all have a Morhers Day to remember

Had a quick read back and see a few mentions of Dublin hosting CQN12, it was difficult enough me being allowed to get to Kerrydale Street but more importantly, is Lennybhoy going to run a bus or just charter a plane ?

Would love to see the Ronny Roar today, not being too cocky but I think we just might, away back to ma kip as I woke up thinking I had just headered the winning goal from Izzy’s cross, back to sleep to see if I got a 2nd, take care & Hail Hail

    Alfie

I respect your view, and that it is heart felt, but I would not be punishing any player on the say so of a tabloid, especially one as sordid as the sun.

If Broony has broken any club rules, and that has still to be decided, then I’m confident it will be dealt with internally.

Why should our club be assisting the gutter press with their headlines ?

As for Anthony, I have no knowledge of how this became public, but again would have preferred it was dealt with in house.

On the general point of footballers and alcohol, I agree that it would be better for them if they abstained, or at the very least limited their consumption. I have seen some brilliant careers cut short by the booze.

Ronny is doing so many things right, and I have confidence that if anyone transgresses on a regular basis, then they would be moved on, no matter who they were.

For Ronny believes it is all about the team.

I hope you enjoy the game today, and that we get the result we all want. Me I’ve been wakened since 3 am just thinking about it and will probably sleep through the game today

I’m in the lower south stand, single letter seat, and always worry when going to Hampden about the view more than our performance. It really isn’t that good a national stadium.

  15. Alfie for what it is worth you are entitled to your opinion. Not sure what you are trying to achieve as the seem to influence me in the opposite direction of the majority of your posts. Are you in North Britain. If so what are you doing up at this time , posting a big ol wind up, when most folks are sleeping. Scott Brown is human, with human weaknesses but super human captaincy skills. I’ll take the latter. He will lift the Cup and do the Broony. Seriously everyone in my family, I mean everyone over 15 has had a sit down. Normal stuff, real life, real person. The victimisation of our captain is an attack on our club, our identity, every one of us. Anyone apologising for this must , in my opinion, be a serious candidate for a hunfiltrator. So not calling you a hun but your acting like one. Hail Hail Alfie. enjoy the first of three trophies tomorrow. Just enjoy it mate.

Safe journey to our great support.

    God bless you all.

    Time to depart.

  19. Seen as it’s quiet, here’s a non story I picket up fro Twittersphere

Steven Gerrard could be a Celtic player next season – after a report linked him with a loan move to the Scottish champions.

The Liverpool legend will move to LA Galaxy in the summer after announcing he is calling an end to his time at Anfield.

Gerrard has already confirmed that he would never play for another English club – ruling out a potential return to the country on loan like ex-international team-mate Frank Lampard did.

Lampard left Chelsea last summer for a move to New York City FC, but signed for affiliate club Manchester City on a short-term deal which has now turned into a season-long loan.

That has soured the opinions of some Chelsea fans on the Blues legend and Gerrard is keen to avoid doing the same.

And, according to The Mirror, Celtic believe they could snap Gerrard up on loan during the MLS off-season in early 2016.

It would be a stunning move for Ronny Deila’s men, but one which looks unlikely given Gerrard will be 35-years-old by then.

But the former England captain should be a valuable asset to Galaxy and could still compete at a high standard if fit.

The Mirror story suggests Celtic chiefs have already discussed the possibility of bringing Gerrard to the club.

They could look to emulate successful loan spells like Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and Lampard among others have all had at British clubs from the MLS
