Creating and taking chances

1634

I watched Hull batter Leicester City on TV last night without putting the ball in the net.  The sheer volume and quality of chances entitled Hull fans to some consolation in the valid football adage, ‘these days happen’.  Those absent from Celtic Park on Saturday are likely to assume we similarly battered Ross County, but they would be wrong.  County defended throughout but were never under anything close to intense pressure.

This is one of the right times of the season to have a performance like that, they are of little use in the first week in February, when the transfer window is closed.  Clues abound as to where we need to strengthen, most pointing to the forward line.  John Guidetti’s drop in form over the last month has dropped like a stone, but he’s still comfortably holding onto the striker position.  Neither Stokes, Griffiths nor Scepovic are putting pressure on a young off-form player.

There is also the playmaker position, which appears to be on the bench.  Kris Commons has been dropped before in his Celtic career, often for important games in Europe, where more industrious, but less talented, players were chosen.  I spent most of Saturday’s game waiting on Kris coming on, but if his general level of fitness counts against him for a starting position, his lack of 90 minute outings since his injury earlier in the season means that his late-game cameos look even less industrious.

As I’ve been saying since July, we only have one playmaker and if he’s not playing or off form, we’ll struggle.  With a match-fit Commons on from the start yesterday, we would have won comfortably.  I’m happy to accept we need a playmaker who’ll cover 15k in 90 minutes, so sign one, but if we’re going to let Commons go, or wither on the bench, sign two, before we end up dependent on one man again.

  1. Peternomics – the club gets poorer Lawwell gets richer.

We need to sort that one out in 2015.

I’m still of the view we need :

33 man squad comprising of 3 players for each position made up of a First 11, a reserve 11 and a under 20 11 from our youth ranks.

Under 20 team on a flat rate of £1500/ week

    Reserve 11 on £3k/ week

First 11 should have 5 top players on £50k/ week

With the remaining 8 players on £10k/week

    £279,500 / week total.

Giving a player wage bill of around £13.5m

It creates internal competition for moving up the wage ladder and incentivises players and should allow us to have at least 5 decent players which the fans will pay to watch.

We should be offering £500k a year for managers job. This will ensure decent applicants.

CEO should be paid £600k / year – that should get rid of Peternomics.

Average season ticket should be £300….we should aim to shift 50,000.

We are then on break even all further merchandising, sponsorship, player sales profit is there to strengthen the team going forward.

There should be a policy of promoting at least 1 youth per year and buying 1 proven SPFL player per year to give the fans players they can relate to.

    No more Peternomics!!!

While I agree that we should win the league comfortably this season, I think that it’s too dismissive to say that nobody else is improving.

Dundee Utd and Aberdeen – debt free – are in a position to offer decent first contracts that will hold onto their young players for another season or two. It will make a big difference. Not to the extent that they become European forces as in the 80’s – but significant enough that they will cause us a bit more bother in the next few years.

If you lob a debt free Hearts and Hibs into the equation, maybe the better sides in the SPL do become English Championship standard. Is that just not feasible or even desirable for some? – or are people still hoping and waiting for some magic wand that moves us into a different league structure?

That could be a long wait…

    Are you a lazy journalist?

    5 – 8 hours a day?

    Where did that come from?

    Whats the motivation?

Celtic dont exist anymore but, what is presently passed-off as Celtic is the plastic imitation created by Fergus – once he removed all the rebels.

Plastic Celtic has been rescued on occasion – like, the Wim season and, The MO’N years, maybe also, Neils first couple of years – apart for that…the only Celticness in evidence about the place comes from the magnificent bhoys and ghirls of the Green Brigade. ok.

    Kev J,

Yeah, you have a point. I think I know which post you are referring to. Had that been made by an unfashionable poster, the PC brigade would be indignant. Not taking sides, just an observation.

  8. I speculate but could we be watching a Fergus moment with RIFC?

    From tsfm

If its “Rangers men” who are finally stepping up to the plate it can only be because without their intervention it’s flats or Tesco at Ibrox.

When the boat is shipping water faster than it can be baled out then the oars get abandoned, the destination forgotten and it’s all hands to the pumps.

Staying afloat might be the main driver. Don’t forget it’s the lack of “Rangers men” that has driven support away as much as footballing factors.

Get them back on board and gates rise.

It worked in the past so why not again?

Will the new guys try and run a football club properly spending only what they earn?

Domestic FFP would encourage them and give them an excuse for not having a war chest.

Watch for the messages coming from smsm. Any mentioning war chest and not domestic FFP should be howled down for stupidity. (But does that have any impact on the already stupid? )

  15. Just scrolling back.

Debate on whether it would be a good thing for Aberdeen/Dundee Utd to win the SPL this year.

    Somebody is having a giraffe.

Given the increased money involved in the Champions League this year with the BT link up (that’s not Blantyre btw) it is an absolute necessity that we win the SPL to have some sort of finance for our future development.

Participation in the Champions League also helps to provide a different stimulus from the week in/out fare of the SPL which many on here are becoming disillusioned with. Another reason to welcome a challenge from the aforementioned Old Firm (see what I did there) but there is only one team ,that I as a Celtic supporter, want to win it.

For the avoidance of doubt I want Celtic to win every match and competition that they enter not because of the riches on offer (although I will take that as collateral damage) but because it’s the team that I love.

  17. I have a strong feeling we will see how much of a “Yes man”RD is in this window.I cannot see him being fobbed off with players he does not want.He has a plan, and no matter what some may call him,its not even out of the starting blocks yet.

His vision is unshakeable. His comments this morning about the treble, show how single minded he is.

I also have a strong feeling that PL will back him in this window. We could be in for some surprises

People forget just how knowledgeable he is.He has studied at Ajax,Dortmund, etc. He has a wide range of contacts, and players. We will see.Its a long road getting a Scottish team, playing in this league up to a level of competing in Europe regularly.

He is worth the chance. He might well fail, but what are the alternatives?.
