Creating and taking chances

1634

I watched Hull batter Leicester City on TV last night without putting the ball in the net.  The sheer volume and quality of chances entitled Hull fans to some consolation in the valid football adage, ‘these days happen’.  Those absent from Celtic Park on Saturday are likely to assume we similarly battered Ross County, but they would be wrong.  County defended throughout but were never under anything close to intense pressure.

This is one of the right times of the season to have a performance like that, they are of little use in the first week in February, when the transfer window is closed.  Clues abound as to where we need to strengthen, most pointing to the forward line.  John Guidetti’s drop in form over the last month has dropped like a stone, but he’s still comfortably holding onto the striker position.  Neither Stokes, Griffiths nor Scepovic are putting pressure on a young off-form player.

There is also the playmaker position, which appears to be on the bench.  Kris Commons has been dropped before in his Celtic career, often for important games in Europe, where more industrious, but less talented, players were chosen.  I spent most of Saturday’s game waiting on Kris coming on, but if his general level of fitness counts against him for a starting position, his lack of 90 minute outings since his injury earlier in the season means that his late-game cameos look even less industrious.

As I’ve been saying since July, we only have one playmaker and if he’s not playing or off form, we’ll struggle.  With a match-fit Commons on from the start yesterday, we would have won comfortably.  I’m happy to accept we need a playmaker who’ll cover 15k in 90 minutes, so sign one, but if we’re going to let Commons go, or wither on the bench, sign two, before we end up dependent on one man again.

We need transparency on the reasons why the CEO position (not PL as the occupier) is remunerated at the level it is.

There has to be a core pay element to make the job attractive to folk with the necessary skill set.

There has to be a co relation between on field success and prudent spending in order to justify bonuses.

Two targets: financial and football with the latter reducing the former if not achieved.

Such a structure will protect any future post holder from personal attacks ( well it won’t but it will give us something concrete to argue about once we know the terms).

On the football front I agree that there has to be more Scots brought in. Not developed but bought after at least one season playing at first team level in the SPFL top tier (perhaps the one below if outstanding there).

    This means

a)we have a player who has proven himself at first team level against our opponents.

    b) The money is kept in Scottish football and if we make the CL is an acceptable way of spreading that wealth around our game.

    c) Such players will not be as likely to see Celtic as a one season stepping stone to England. Take Broonie as an example of a player being happy to stay at Celtic.

Become Scotland ‘ s Atletico Bilboa in a more limited sense.

On top of that sell ST’s as Family purchases with different prices for 1,2, 3, 4 person tickets.

Let families book their seats on line before games having already paid up front.

Finally summer football. Improves CL qualifying chances, more light, possibly not so cold and more conducive to a family day or night out.

A group proposing to invest in Rangers have become the club’s biggest shareholders.

Members of the “Three Bears” consortium have bought out Laxey Partners’ entire 16.32% shareholding in Rangers International Football Club plc, with over 13 million shares changing hands at 20p on Wednesday morning.

The group behind the purchase consists of George Letham, Douglas Park and George Taylor.

They recently offered a £6.5m cash bail-out in return for shares and board representation, making their offer based on a proposed issue of 40,739,000 new shares to existing shareholders, which was due to take place in January.

However the three have now made an unexpected power grab ahead of that issue, with the Rangers board yet to decide whether to accept their initial offer.

Combined with Taylor’s existing shareholding in the club, the group now hold at least 19.48 per cent of the shares in the company.

The move doesn’t provide any immediate cash injection to Rangers, with the proceeds from the sale going entirely to the seller.

STV understands Laxey Partners made the decision to sell in the hope the group would provide strong opposition to Mike Ashley, who was recently thwarted by the Scottish FA in his attempt to increase his shareholding to 29.9%.

The governing body’s rules regarding dual interests in club led to the move being voted down by their board.

Rangers have publicly stated their need to raise £8m in fresh capital to be able to fund their operating costs in 2015.

Letham had previously loaned Rangers £1m in March to plug a short-term funding gap.

the 3 hairy huns use 2.6m buying up laxleys share holding,so by my reckoning, Ashley is still owed his 3 big ones and the wages for next month are still to be found, 20m needed to sort out snake mountain, no scouting system in place, losing 800 grand a month,a fool and his money right enough,of course the hun hordes will tell ye different..

The plc has no interest in keeping the money within Scottish football. As I posted two days ago. Spending the money abroad results in less scrutiny and more scope for creative accounting.

    Just scrolling back.

Debate on whether it would be a good thing for Aberdeen/Dundee Utd to win the SPL this year.

    Somebody is having a giraffe.

Given the increased money involved in the Champions League this year with the BT link up (that’s not Blantyre btw) it is an absolute necessity that we win the SPL to have some sort of finance for our future development.

    ######################################################################

Winning the SPL is something I’m confident about despite this season’s hiccups.

Getting our hands on that BT money is a whole different kettle of fish however as at least two of the teams we have to get past will be significantly better than anything we will meet domestically. Will the board speculate to accumulate by strengthening the team to get us through the qualifiers?

I’ve not given this a great deal of thought so don’t shoot me down too quickly!!

I’ve noticed a few times recently that you’ve said that the way to go is to offer incentives etc to bring families etc to Celtic.

It strikes me though that the highest attendances in Scottish football were in an age where the game was still predominantly, though not exclusively, watched by men.

Is your idea that it would increase crowd numbers?

  20. Like most normal folk I don’t really understand why some sad folk would bother coming on to a blog and utter nothing but negative utterances about a club they claim to have once supported. ……..

Loads of folk seem to. Not just the one exceptional irritant being singled out today.

I don’t get it myself but maybe it is cheaper than therapy to hurl abuse at those in charge of our football club.

Of course there will be.Just what form is anyones guess. The buy out of shares helps them not a jot.Laxey,if them, have taken all the money.Nothing going into the huns at all. They have not pulled back from the brink. What they have now is a replacement for whoever sold the shares, nothing more.No fresh finance for the clubThey still need the £8-10 million to keep going.

Turkeybhoy. If they get 6.5 million plus 1 million from the transfer of McLeod and I believe they have an offer on the table for Law they are going to have around 9 million surely that will help ? If things are so bad why are folk prepared to buy shares and inject there cash ? As I said I just dont understand it. H.H.
