Crimean clubs crossing, Bayern banner ban

750

We’ve been trailing the Ukraine-Russia Joint League plans, which was due to commence early next year, since they were first mooted in 2012.  Political will, met commercial money, and a football desire to put the merger of two large national leagues into the schedule.

Needless to say, these plans are off the agenda, although it’s easy to look back now and see why the political will was so forthcoming.  Note to Westminster, if you want to indulge in a bit of togetherness, put your shoulder behind building a relevant nationwide sporting infrastructure.

Instead of a Joint League, what the football authorities in Russia, Ukraine and Zurich are left with is a bit of a mess.  Crimean clubs, Sevastopli and Tavriya are midway through a season in the Ukrainian Premier League.  Russian minister for Sport, Vitaly Mutko, said, “From the beginning of next season Sevastopol and Tavria wiil join the Russian Premier League”, which will expand to accommodate them.

He told Russian media he had received assurances from Fifa that they would accommodate the change, adding, “We want a friendly relationship with Ukraine and do not want to disrupt their current championship.  When the season finishes in May we will be back in discussions to formulate the way forward.”

The Russian media report that Ukrainian FA are less interested in maintaining friendly relations with their eastern neighbours and have written to Fifa and Uefa asking them to ban Russian football if they take clubs from the Ukrainian FA without permission.  This claim has not been mentioned in the Ukrainian press, or on the Ukraine FA website – despite this being cited as the source in Russia, so it cannot be verified.

Clubs moving between national associations is a common occurrence, happening every year somewhere in the world, but I’m unaware of it happening without the approval of both FAs.  Notwithstanding that, there is zero chance Uefa or Fifa will block this transfer.  Two member clubs are in a problematic situation, they have a league which wants to take them. Uefa will approve.

Conspiracy theorists everywhere were confounded this morning when one of Europe’s most connected clubs, Bayern Munich, were issued with a partial stadium closure for their home Champions League quarter final against Manchester United, after fans displayed an offensive banner against Arsenal in the last round.  Homophobia was their offence of choice.

Seville – The Celtic Movement:

“After the game I asked a policeman the way to the station and he just pointed ahead…walked on to find myself in Porto Bus area…walked back – asked another Policeman and he pointed other way”.

  1. So if we win the title this week, who do we send away for an early break? Or, put another way, what would we imagine our basic team to be after securing the title?

Oh, and will the BBC refer to us as `Champions` as often as they do with the Third tier Divisional winners?

There is merit in that, especially Barca. Though Real have a more cynical type of defender.

Our back five “collectively” not individually is arguably the best in Celtic history IMHO

What do you know about Pope Pius XII and the X Report? Not trying to be smart or to put you on the spot, just wondering if you’d ever heard about it, or if anybody had heard about it for that matter.

I am guessing but as long as Gazprom is sponsoring UEFA, and whoever else, then there has been no crime in Crimea, or at least none to worry Michel or Sepp unduly. Puts paid to the Ukraine-Russia model mind you. Then again borders in that part of the world have a habit of moving, in this or that direction, and that includes both the German and Polish borders, over two hundred miles of them. Could go to extra time before it is all over!

I have been surprised that the state of Scottish football under independent governance has not been used by the Better Together campaigners to suggest this is what happens when a small population is restricted ( by choice) from joining with a larger population and market right on its doorstep, for the benefit for all.

Of course the problem the Better Together campaign has is that staying together does absolutely nothing to help those trapped in the independent football nation state in Scotland that already exists.

Now that could be addressed by Better Together supporters saying that the anomaly of an independent football nation state within an otherwise united market will be addressed by a UK government post referendum, if the vote is to remain a United Kingdom.

The fact that the deterioration in Scottish football and the link to its independent government has not been made a political football ( see what I did there) by Better Together fills me with no more confidence at continuing rule from Westminster than does the prospect of a national Scottish Government whose advocates thought the Offensive Behaviour at Football legislation was a good thing.

So on the politics a plague on both their houses.

On self interest I am part of the ageing Scottish demographic as anyone 55 years and over will be in 10 years when I understand that, unless there is a few right bad winters, (black humour), the number of codgers requiring support will be greater than now. So no thanks.

On a Celtic level we would be doomed to be a big plant in a small pot with insufficient nourishment to reach our higher potential and aspirations if Scottish Government, like the SFA became independent.

Philosophically I think the idea of independence is an illusion anyway. We all depend on each other at some point or other and we either have cooperation or conflict. Separation encourages the illusion of independence and makes conflict more likely than cooperation, especially if the divorce is not amicable.

You will have show me that in context. Also I stand by what I said. Aiden was born brought up in Glasgow and he is Scottish, therefore IMHO he should play for Scotland. It would be different if he wasn’t getting that opportunity but I don’t think that was the case.

No one will convince me otherwise and I don’t see why I should be castigated for my Scottishness. Particularly when most of are Scottish

Aiden saw himself as Irish that’s what matters.

No offence but what right have you or anyone else got to dictate to any individual what ethnic group they feel they belong to?

    ———

OK, let’s not have any rewriting of history where Aiden is concerned. The reason he chose to play for Ireland is quite simple.

When playing for Celtic boys club he was not allowed to play for his school team. The SFA had a policy at that time to only pick boys for the Scottish schoolboys team if they actually played for their school. So Aiden was not selected.

Ireland did not have such a policy and as he was eligible, they did pick Aiden.

When it came time to decide whether to play for the senior Scottish team or the Irish team he chose the team that chose him.

Also, Aiden does have deep connections with Ireland having spent many summer holidays there with his family and Scottish friends.
