Culpable defence, but that’s not all

824

The most pleasing aspect about last night was the manager’s reaction afterwards: “Yet another soft goal”. “We don’t defend a basic ball into the box”.  But, before Cristian Gamboa and Craig Gordon pick up the tab for a bad night in Lithuania, more went wrong.  Much more.

Goals change games and you can be sure games will change when Celtic are defending the way they are right now.  Gamboa losing his man for the goal was in keeping with what we should expect.  Cristian is good going forward but is not the most diligent at the back.  We need a backup, backup, right back.  Right?

Despite all that’s going wrong in defence, I am just as concerned about how the midfield is operating.  Our passing was again poor.  Olivier Ntcham opened the scoring after two minutes and opened the Suduva defence late in the game for Moussa Dembele to shoot wide, but for the rest of the game his passing was as inaccurate as it was against AEK and Rosenborg away.

Callum McGregor, so often a key to unlock packed defences, was ineffective.  I would like to see him play the deep lying playmaker roll over our next three games.  There he can dictate the pace and accuracy of our passing, leaving space for Rogic to play in front of him.

Moussa Dembele is our best striker, but the shape of the team left him isolated and looking just as out of sorts as Odsonne Edouard did at home to AEK.  We have potent strikers who see little of the ball.

On the positive side, Suduva were as poor a team as I can remember playing in recent seasons – and I include the Gibraltareños (as they will be known after March) in that.  We will reach the Europa League group stage.  How effectively we compete there will be determined by the arrivals over the next seven days.

The point about a solid, experienced CH is a good one, and we do need one in this week.

it may be fair to say the Brendan hasn’t prioritised the defence, it’s hardly fair to say it’s a blind spot… Now then of that squa , some have moved on, some have improved some are still WIP. Considering our starting position our defence has improved. You don’t have an invincible season, win every domestic trophy get to the UCL with a bad defence.

Brendan seen problems at the back from day one, that’s why he brought in Toure. Sure we were well exposed at the back verses Man City, PSG and the like but in general we did ok…

It was obviously a priority this window, especially with three defenders at the world cup while UCL qualifiers took place. Brendan wanted quality defenders in early doors and didn’t get them.

His analysis was spot on… hardly a blind spot.

    Hail Hail

  8. Mulgrew, Odea, dear god are we not in enough trouble . We need a right back of quality urgently . We glaringly need not one , but two towering no nonsense centre half’s urgently . And a tough as teak enforcer in midfield to help oor captain marvel , he is now being challenged by boot merchants ,who would have stayed well out of his road a couple of seasons ago , and that too is urgently . The cash should be there , we have a few players to bargain with , so get it done . if not we need new suits in our boardroom , and that too would be urgently .

  9. Gary 67,

you say Christie is not a replacement for Armstrong,as he is an attacking midfielder.Sorry,is that notvwhat Armstrong was.

Christie when we signed him,was the Mc Ginn of the time.He was a success at Aberdeen,so bringing him back this season, and selling Armstrong, looks like a replacement to me.Do I think he is good enough. No,but many on here like him.

No matter what Mullet says,Morgan and Arzani are excellent replacements for Paddy.Plus the emergence of Johnston.

  10. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bournesouprecipe, Tesco on Dalmarnock Road will be my pre match stop tomorrow. Pre match pint(s) no more .

  11. TURKEYBHOY on 25TH AUGUST 2018 12:19 PM

For the most part Armstrong played alongside Brown in the 2, occasionally he played further forward. Christie can’t play that deep, he’s a forward, at ICT and Aberdeen he either played behind the striker (like Rogic does for us) or off the wing. Christie is not a replacement for Armstrong, McGinn was to be his replacement but we know what happened there.

I would think that Morgan was replacement for Roberts in the squad. Arzani is just part of our strange relationship with City to help them around FFP. Johnston looks a bonus, a young bhoy who is coming through the ranks and looks like he could make it with us.

  12. Heading to Singapore ( sentosa island ) troops. Any info on venues to watch the hoops tomorrow would be appreciated.

    HH

  13. I see turkeybhoy is desperately trying to plan blame on Brendan Rodgers for what is fast becoming a calamity.

He has a blind spot when it comes to defence.

Well sadly for turkeybhoy and for paul67 when you can drag him away from his prawn sandwiches and freebies the inconvenient truth is that Rodgers gave mr lawwell his targets and mr lawwell screwed it up.

So it’s not the managers fault he didn’t get who he asked for it’s lawwell and the parsimonious board.

Even after all this mess the board and lawwell are hiding and there is absolutely no,sign of movement in the transfer market.

It’s unforgivable unless you are of course turkeybhoy who would hail anything the board do or don’t as success.

This absolute car crash is made in the board room. They have pissed of Rodgers, alienated the supporters (not that they care) and ensured that the Huns get momentum.

    And still it’s rodgers fault.

When the accounts come out the board will try and lord it up. They will find that the vast majority of those who care about Celtic will be absolutely disgusted.

  14. No sooner has Brendan Rodgers put the lid on the Scott McKenna bid, SMSM have Celtic back in for the player, plus ca change. Writing and saying the opposite of what Celtic say, is for Celtic supporters to digest with the morning cornflakes, and nowadays all day long on smartphones, every twenty minutes.

Nothing new though, its as old as Celtic. We didn’t get primary targets, so they have us in ‘meltdown’ we’ve too chose manager or board? Classic Scotland, classic anti Celtic dogma widely predicted weeks ago and driven Rainjurz and Sevco.

Entrenched anti agenda’s will always be a part of Celtic the internet and social media is just making the problem more visible, instant clickbait updates in your hand provide too much information, fake news especially when the transfer window is open.

Seems from ticket sales we’re not convinced though, for the snowflakes on the internet it seems it was so simple for Rainjurz to ‘buy’ a team and appoint an unproven youth coach doubled up with a failed manager guaranteed to undermine, the stability and unsurpassed dominance created at Celtic, peaked by Brendan Rodgers in his second season.

Sevco could only improve, it wouldn’t matter who they signed, it really wouldn’t. The new club bottomed out at Celtic Park when we won 5 nil, going on 10, and in BR’s after match comments he regretted not having scored many more. A landmark for Sevco, with the only way upwards, they ‘escaped’ with a 5-0 and they knew it.

If the extent of Sevco ambition is Kyle Lafferty, Celtic fans should be ashamed of themselves questioning our club or the fees we are willing to pay, for players that agree to sign for us. With people ‘working very hard behind the scenes’ to get our own enhancements in the next six days will be frought.

We should be satisfied in our conscience that for Celtic fans of the present, and the long term future, we will continue to triumph at our miraculous club, because we’re spending our own money.

    Hail Hail

  15. FAVOURITE UNCLE on

Even after all this mess the board and lawwell are hiding and there is absolutely no,sign of movement in the transfer market.

well said NEGGY.i want transfers in last week with time to bed in.next friday is just not good enough.someone turning up at the end of the week to sit in the stand to watch the OLD FIRM DERBY is a no go for me.

    Re Arzani

As a current melbourne city season ticket holder I got to watch him last year. He has the ability and trickery to go past Spl level defenders with ease (roberts and mcgeady tricks rather than Forrest pace) and could be an important player when we are looking for a goal against 11 men defences.

A-league is only 18 games (ish) long and he didn’t play all season so he will be a good bit off what Brendan expects.

He looks like he has a chip on his shoulder (some class as much needed winger confidence or gallus)

So attitude may be an issue.

I would rather have him in the team than Hayes and if given a chance will get fans off their seats.

He will have to learn to defend and tackle though to fit in.

    Hail hail

  17. GIVEHIMTHEMONEYPETERCSC on 25TH AUGUST 2018 12:44 PM

Does he play more on right or left wing?

Is he 2 footed (like Morgan) or does he prefer to go to his stronger foot (like Roberts did)?

  18. GIVEHIMTHEMONEYPETERCSC

    Arzani:

So he’s a one trick pony an a smacked erse to boot. Add in lazy an doesnt like getting his shorts dirty.

    I can hardly wait! ;-)

    Gary67

He can play on both sides ….he was More on right at city but can play both (played on left at World Cup)

THe a league to Spl is a step up though but he was putting some experienced defenders on their arse

A strange loan with Forrest,Hayes,Sinclair,Morgan and Johnson and I thought one of these would go

  20. Had a wee glance in the supermarket this morning. There it was front page , The scouser proclaiming WE WONT BE BULLIED EVER AGAIN . that’s for you broonie , the rest of our midfield , could be a worry for them .

  21. GIVEHIMTHEMONEYPETERCSC on 25TH AUGUST 2018 12:54 PM

    Cheers.

BR has already said not to expect to see him anytime soon. Maybe he’ll get some games second half of the season and we will offload one of our many wide players in January.

  22. Off to watch the juniors, Pollok v Kirkintilloch Rob Roy. The first of a possible 7 games in 9 days I’ll be going to ?

  23. Can’t really get caught up in the media pish about us being back in for McKenna, especially after Brendan said interest was ended.

    But. If we were…..?

I suspect it would involve an increased fee and a strong possibility of Hayes and Christie moving back to Pittodrie. Neither of those two will feature very much for us in the coming season, and in fairness to them, they should be given the chance to move on. Problem for Aberdeen would be getting anywhere close to the wage that Celtic will be paying them. McKenna is injured for the next month, so Aberdeen won’t miss him before that, but they would be ‘cash rich’ and be able to go out and buy a replacement, who would probably be local boy John Soutar of Hearts. Whether Hearts would be willing to sell, given the injury to Berra, is another question, but we know Hearts aren’t really interested in the money, otherwise why would they ‘sell’ Lafferty to the huns for a fee so ridiculously low ( or on favourable payment terms for Sevco…..£100 a month for the next 50 years ).

Don’t think they would sell Soutar to Celtic, which is a pity because he’s a better prospect than McKenna, in my humble but irrelevant opinion. ?

    Back Brendan. Back the Team.
