Cutting the cord: Sky are fostering their own downfall

583

Last week we discussed a Bloomberg article on the increasing availability of premium quality, pirated, broadcast content, made possible by set-top boxes.  In short, products are available to make any amount of premium sports or movie content available to users without subscription, with little the law can do about it.

Quite apart from pirate viewing, subscription broadcast numbers are under pressure from legal streaming services, such as Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, a drift known as Cutting the Cord.  A survey published this week reports that 8.2% of US broadcast subscribers ditched their service in 2014 in favour of streaming.  More significantly, 45.2% of US subscribers report they cut back on content they paid their broadcast supplier for.

UK satellite and cable TV subscribers pay some of the top prices in the world for sports and other premium content.  A dysfunctional market has emerged due to the controlling position of two players:

BSkyB, who dominate subscription TV supply in the UK
The FA Premier League, who own the key content for the UK market

Within this market there are winners and losers.  The winners are English and Welsh football clubs who earn enormous revenues from the FA Premier League TV deal, and subsequent trickle-down monies.  The losers are UK subscribers, who paid a fortune to keep the BskyB-FA Premier League contract in funds, and, of course, Scottish football clubs, who are excluded from the England and Wales league system.

Scotland is 8% of BskyB’s business, significant enough to make a dent in its revenues, but more importantly, if a US-style drift from expensive subscriptions is fostered in Scotland, it will move south soon enough.

I’ve been looking into this since we discussed it last week and will report back.

Shocked and stunned to read in the Daily Mail that Dave King met Sports Direct on the morning of his club’s EGM, as reported by Phil MacGiollaBhain a week ago.  That will explain the lack of denial, I suppose.  The interesting question is: Who gave the Daily Mail the story?  Dave King, or through his PR company?

I find it shocking that anyone connected with this site should actually be be subscribing to Sky, let alone talking about giving it up.

    ===============================================

Sorry for shocking you, but I (reluctantly) subscribe to Sky because it’s the only way I can watch Celtic without resorting to dodgy streams

On this one I am extreme to the point of crankiness.

I would never willingly or knowingly give Rupert Murdoch one terribly thin dime.

Ashley went to court to, inter alia, prevent the details of the merchandising contracts being divulged – it seems to me that it should have been King that should have been protecting the onerous detail.

By whipping-up the resentment against Ashley and producing a boycott of SD kit by the Follow Follow brigade, he (King) has ensured that he will be delivered of a massive ‘buy back’ bill for unsold goods.

To body-swerve an EGM where his resolutions are being voted on, is quite frankly astonishing.

To meet Ashley on his own, without apparently the knowledge of the rest of his board, is mind-boggling.

Why has he gone out of his way to pick a fight with Ashley, telling him that he would not pay back the loan and raising a resolution stymie the EGM, originally called by Ashley to address the maladministration and de-listing from the London Stock Exchange?

King must be looking for some kind of an exit strategy – no one in the Scottish media dares saying a cheep – it’s fingers in the ears and whistling in the dark.

Green was a con artist, but at least he shared a cup of tea with the season-ticket buying gullibles, and although GASL has launched a similar sales pitch, he seems to be hiding away.

Warburton has talked about exploiting the ‘loan market’ – isn’t that what they have been doing since their creation in 2012?

What hotel was the convention in this year ?

And is it the same Hotel planned for 2017 ?

Been told I’m going to it, my brother in law who lives in Missisauga has a special birthday, as does another we are attending with, so a fair bit of celebrating :-))

  17. The “buy-back” clause does appear awful for Sevco. The club will be left with the bill for the clubs boycott.

However, even if they accumulate more debt to MA, will they ever pay it back? Over their dead (holding company of course) body.

A minute’s applause for St Kessog’s P/S in Balloch, which is now closed.

As the very proud father of three of its former pupils, who have all gone on to become very successful and well rounded young adults, the solid start they got at St Kessog’s was very important; as are the numerous friends they made who are a great credit to the school, and their teachers.

Just a quick question. I am thinking of subscribing to celtic tv to watch the preseason friendlies. Is the only difference between the premium UK service and the online UK service the bandwidth or do you get anything else.

I will most likely want to watch it through an iPad using an apple tv box linked to my TV. Has anyone watched matches using this method and if so is the picture clear on a TV.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  22. Looks to me that it is only Celtic fans that are up for some kind of action against SKY and BT.

This is because the ‘kick-back’ we get is derisory in terms of our stature and turnover; however, to the other eleven Premiership clubs, this money, as it is, is vital to their survival.

Any action by us would be attacked and portrayed as putting the whole game in Scotland at risk.

What is the alternative to the ‘big two’?

Remember the fiasco surrounding the proposed SPL football channel?

The ideal scenario would be for us to ‘go it alone’ – that of course lead to us being sacked from the SPFL.

Scottish football matters little to SKY/BT, in their great scheme of things – they would not ‘bat an eyelid’ in dropping us – it would have only a minuscule effect on a sliver of their operations.

It was held in the Westgate Hotel, used to be the Hilton on Paradise road believe it or not, lol.

Lovely hotel, I think it the same one for 2017, and that will be a biggy, as it’s the 50th anniversary of Lisbon, and they are expecting a very big crowd.

I was at the 40th with the Bramalea Bhoys, up in the Exec box :-)) it was also a special birthday for Brother in law, stayed in Riviera for that one, sure there was over 3000 at that one

Also stayed in the MGM Grand Signature for another of the conventions

So planning on the next one, with my family from Canada and quite a few from Bonnie Scotland, looks like a few days in Toronto, down to Convention, then onto Florida

Will look at the Hotel – Thanks

  29. I don’t think it’s fair to assume that all Scottish subscribers paid for Sky exclusively for Scottish football. They want to see Spanish, English and Champions League as well.

Add to that the pressure of the kids wanting cartoons and movies.
