Dave Cormack’s empty words

489

“We have been doing local pilots on mental health and wellbeing in Aberdeen which are working.

“The days of booze and betting sponsorships doesn’t really tie in with healthy living and being at the heart of our communities.

“Football can be a magnet for people, healthy living and mental health, so we need to be at the centre of the community.”

The words of Aberdeen chairman, Dave Cormack, spoken less than two weeks ago.  Yesterday, we discovered two of his players tested positive for Covid and a further six have been isolated as all eight attended the pub at the centre of the Aberdeen outbreak.

Mr Cormack, those are empty words.  Today, you are a poster boy for poor governance in healthy living, booze and the caring for the heart of your community.  Your primary task as a director of a football club is to direct the actions of those you control.  What happened?

His interview, in the Daily Record, was full of empty management speech:

“Something I think we have to explore at the centre to drive an agenda.

“What do we want to be? What is our vision? I don’t know what the vision is. We don’t have a branding strategy.

“At the centre, it’s not run like a real company that would have a vision, a branding strategy or goals to drive income.

“The cup is half full, how can we drive things?”

It’s like he had just finished watching a very poor Ted Talk on business growth by an entrepreneur who sold for millions and has no idea how it happened.  Or maybe that’s really him.

Scottish football is the great grounder of egos.  Think your business background gives you better insight and decision making than those in an industry you’ve never worked in?  Buy Hearts or Aberdeen and find out.  Think that your experience as on the Conservative Party – Scottish executive while Tony Blair earned a landslide prepared you for anything?  Maybe you should become chief exec at Partick Thistle?

Football players have been granted ‘sports bubble’ special status, when they abuse that privilege by hitting busy pubs, they have let us all down.

  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Cheers Bada.

I see quite a few potential issues with this.

    (all speculation – BTW)

Club routinely sell discounted tickets for CL qualifiers to ST holders.

If they pitch the price of a one-off ticket too high, Premier Sports could undercut Celtic.

If they pitch too low and take up is poor net revenue will be limited.

There’s also the possibility that Celtic have sold the match rights for a higher fee (as ST holders will also be potential buyers).

Also the issue of sustaining the relationship with Premier Sports longer term.

    (partner rather than competitor)

One off game instead of two legs may require TV rights to be shared among both clubs?

(Team drawn away already at disadvantage)

Anyone on here know if Premier Sports use Sunset and Vine for their match production?

    Hail hail

“My” line up was just what I thought Neil would go with, like you I wouldn’t mind if El Hamed started, think Taylor & Frimpong will be (hopefully) attacking more than defending

Gene- I think it’s possibly because the pandemic could escalate in any country, at any time.

  4. Bada

I expect that Reykjavik would fly into Glasgow airport on a charter – I know they pass ipox on the way but as long as they keep the windows shut they should be ok.

Seriously what country would they choose which has a very low rate and would be happy to stage the games

Not sure who decides what ties play where but here is the quote

“Greece, Cyprus, Hungary and Poland have offered to act as neutral venues for UEFA competition matches if COVID-19 related-travel restrictions prevent them being played in the originally-scheduled country, the European soccer body said on Thursday”

The fat bam should lose some weight.

  7. you will lucky to see Ajeti this year considering he hasn’t kicked a ball in earnest this year , all this time to make your mind up if you want to come and play for us , having to be coaxed to join, not for me.

Now that would be strange. The Polish Super Cup between Cracovia and Legia Warsaw was cancelled yesterday due to Coronavirus. Whilst Kraków, and indeed Poland, has been doing relatively well during the pandemic, a recent spike in cases gives cause for concern. Friend in Kraków quite happy with the cancellation as he is a Wisla fan, but also fears that lockdown may be coming back just at the time tourists were flooding back to Kraków.

  9. WTF…no early team sheet leak…

    Yours in disgust…Kilmasonic ;-))

    H.H.

  10. Ron67…you’re conflating going to see his family…with dithering, on Ajeti’s part…you really need to stop reading the SMSM

Have I seen him play, no…so I can say with conviction that he’s a haddie ;-))

Exactly … these things are going to be changing daily … it will be a long time before I go on a plane again … wasn’t the best flyer but always enjoyed the holiday so just got on with it… just my opinion but won’t take the chance for a good while …

I see -£4m (copyright Bankiebhoy) starts for the Huns today … shoorly the law of averages a “striker” should get his first league goal of 2020 :-)

  12. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Icelandic Givernment May have to grant a special dispenataion to Reykjavik to travel as the aicelandic league has been suspended due to a jump in Covid cases.

FourStoneCoppi – I’ve cycled El Camino and trans-America and its a doddle. Just remember the uphills never felt as steep when you were cycling doon them, and the downhills never lasted as long as you’d hoped they wid. Oh, and I never trained for distance; only for hills. What’s yer cycling target ? BTW 3-1 for us today HH

  14. DALLAS DALLAS

The Icelandic Government has superbly managed the pandemic, with a total of 10 deaths. New daily cases have been in the single digits, but leapt to 22 on Friday. Suspending the league program shows they are really serious. If no dispensation is granted, I believe UEFA will award Celtic the tie.

  15. Dallas 3.00pm

I wonder if Iceland is similar to Scotland and football (elite sports people) will be allowed to travel …

Dallas junior (ref) in charge of the Huns game and red red red card Ross on the line … surely Morelos will get a wee penalty to get him off the mark this year (with ex-ger in goals :-)

  16. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Iniquitous, if I read Uefa’s guidelines last week correctly, we will be awarded the game if the opposition don’t fulfil the fixture.

  17. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gerry , Ross and Dallas are the perfect combination for the seas. Ibrox , in the future , will probably be the only stadium Ross won’t get grief due to his full time job.

  18. CELTIC: Barkas, Jullien, Taylor, Brown, Christie, Edouard, Elyounoussi, Frimpong, Ajer, McGregor, Forrest.

Subs: Bain, Bitton, Klimala, Soro, Ntcham, Bolingoli, Robertson, Elhamed, Karamoko

  19. Dallas 3.16pm

I thought he would have took a step back from his linesman job since his “promotion” ….

    Celtic team

    My team from earlier

  20. Gene 3.17pm

I think Alnwick is a great signing for St Mirren … and like you I hope he does have a shut out as well, and maybe Marcus Fraser gets a wee winner for our own Delaneys Dunky

  21. Today’s starting line up v Kilmarnock ……

Barkas; Frimpong, Jullien, Ajer, Taylor; Brown, McGregor, Forrest, Christie, Elyounoussi, Edouard

Subs: Bain, ElHamed, Bitton, Bolingoli, Soro, Robertson, Ntcham, Dembele, Klimala

  22. Lòoks like Twinkle Toes Rogic is surplus to Lenny’s requirements….as good as he is on his game it’s been too few appearances over the past few seasons….I wish him well ;-))

Really hoped Lenny would’ve went for 2 up front today….grrrr

    H.H.

  23. Goldson scores for scum.Operation Sell Morelos on full bung,as he starts.Huns hoping he plays like Messi.

  24. No hindsight from me.I said at 12.58 on last blog ,that I have never seen Broony play well on plastic. No Frimpong,ElHamed to make up a back 3 playing 3-5-2.I hope we never play Jullien on a plastic pitch again.Like Bambi on ice.
