de Boer reads script on predictable Celtic

1017

It’s probably easier to start with what went right last night, than what went wrong.  Efe Ambrose was the epitome of composure, trying to retain possession whenever possible, his transformation since Juventus has been remarkable.  van Dijk, Lustig and Izaguirre each did well.  Fraser Forster had a few saves to make, but this was one Champions League game he didn’t need to pull off a wonder-save.  He was totally exposed for the goal but otherwise Ajax didn’t really stress the Celtic goalkeeper, a clue, perhaps, to the solid performance of those immediately in front of him.

Our top two Champions League performers, Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons, both put in their least effective game at this level.  Samaras’ normally-reliable touch and ability to hold the ball deserted him, while Kris looked like a guy returning from injury. Slowly.

The minutia of these games are analysed by each team and after last month’s game, Frank de Boer clearly identified that Georgios was the major cog in Celtic’s machine. The striker was triangulated by opponents each time the ball came near him.

Neil Lennon was left with few choices in the middle of the park.  Mulgrew and Kayal would not have been his first choice partnership, given a free hand, but the only practical change there would have been to introduce Joe Ledley.  It’s far from clear what difference this would have made.

Celtic persisted in playing down the left long after it was evident this strategy was unproductive. Late in the first half one wag text me to say, “Time to bring Forrest on”, which told the whole story. Anthony Stokes was adrift, largely unconnected to the ankle clipping going on behind him. In short, our play was predictable and correctly predicted by do Boer. We didn’t have a Plan B, which even the best of teams need to avoid defeat occasionally in the Champions League.

  1. Sounds like a bit of a damp squid last night. Still, we are not out of anything yet.

I saluted an Arsenal fan for their very good away win and he referred to the mentality of the players and that Gordon Strachan had once said that the most important eight inches in football is between your ears!! Never heard Strachan attributed to that one.

We have done so well this European campaign without three key players from last season. The Milan match will be a cracker, but watch out for that bandit Kaká who is coming into form again!!

Add Robbie Keane to the foreign imports.Only here a short while but did what he was paid to do.

the other Keane wasn’t on the pitch enough to make a great difference. Hence no champions medal.

  3. Still down about last night! Then I think about the state of them from the South-side and fair cheers me up!

Auldheid – I’d been in contact with JP this afternoon and asked if the club security officer was involved and stated that the club should put something out there. He responded and thankfully the club eventually put out their statement.

I’m not sure who the security officer is, but part of his remit is to liaise with police forces in the cities we play in. Time for him to earn his salary!

I think most will agree with me when i say “if were gonna be poor in Europe then lets be poor with Scottish talent, rather than useless foreigners who only come for the European night’s”. Does our club have an Anti-Scottish signing policy? Why aren’t the youths from our (so-called) Youth Academy getting the opportunity to prove how good they are in the SPL more often? Players that don’t perform in the SPL should not get near the Champions League Squad. And I don’t care if you have to play a 15 year old in a position to replace an under-performing Senior, it has to be done otherwise this bunch of duds will remain duds. We got a bankers mentality at this club with the Champions League being the Players reward for failure in the SPL. We should be miles ahead of all these other clubs in the SPL (not to mention Morton) with the amount of resources we have at this club, yet we are left with the impression that is opposite to that.

If Sevco were in the SPL this season they would be challenging this bunch of useless twats for every single piece of silverware going on the Domestic front.

Enough of the bs already. Celtic Football Club are fooling nobody but their very own fans.

    Monaghan1900 @ 18;42,

“To state, though, that ‘We would stress that there is no excuse for any form of violent conduct’ is nonsense.”

Defending you or your’s is not violent conduct, using force, even physical force to defend/protect is not violence.

    ——

You’ll have difficulty persuading Alan Minter that what Marvin Haggler did to him, quite legitimately, in 1980 didn’t involve violent conduct! Sometimes, however unsavoury it may appear, we are entitled to use violence.

To all those who have misgivings about our current youth set up and the associated policy of buying young. Then selling on for profit.

In the early 80’s a Mr Cruyff set up an academy in Barcellona. the aim of this institution was to identify and develop the best young players from all over Spain. Playing a style of football that would entertain the fans as well as bring success to the club.

It took over 20 years for this project to really start delivering success and bringing players through the system and directly into the 1st team.

I think we all want to see more home grown players in our first team but we all have to understand there is no magic wand. As well as developing the young players we also have to develop our coaching staff and extend our ideas out into the wider footballing community in Scotland.

That’s what happened in Spain, other clubs noticed what was going on at Barca and copied that model, look at La Liga now compared to 10 years ago and you’ll see more home grown players in each team. Also they are all technically better than their counterparts in say England.

This is a long term project.

  17. Notthebus

Plenty of teams in Scotland who have sussed the lack of a plan ‘B’ so no real credit to De Boer.

We had options but chose NOT to take them, when changes were made they were equally poor. The buck stops at Lennon’s door….poor team selection, poor tactics, poor substitutions and not for the first time.

    Forget banners being reported.

Someone should be reporting Forrest for being absolutely gash. No better than Owen Archdeacon. Stokes for being a useless git who should be playing for Kilmarnock, and Mulgrew for….well let’s put it this way, if there is a player in our team, who you don’t worry about attracting attention from other clubs who pay better than us, then he shouldn’t be in our team.

    ====================================

You are comparing JF with Owen Archdeacon as some kind of insult.

Owen Archdeacon was a committed player and fan for us,and to my knowledge still is, as is his father.

So please no comparisons to a player who gave his best for Celtic as opposed to JF who has had a charmed life with regard to game time when patently unsuited and undeserving.
