Dead cats, no gimmies, why else are we here?

471

Although there was lots to be positive about after Tuesday’s performance against the European champions, as we left the ground, many of us could see that an unfortunate series events were about to unfold.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s incredible 1-4 over Leipzig in Germany, following on from Leipzig’s 4-0 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, was always going to result in the reaction it did.  Leipzig sacked manager Domenico Tedesco yesterday morning and appointed Marco Rose in his place.  It is inconceivable that Leipzig will not experience a Dead Cat Bounce, at the very least.

Rose, as Borussia Dortmund manager, was in charge of one of several fancied teams knocked out of Europe by Newco last season.  They finished second in the Bundesliga but he was sacked in May.  It was at Salzburg where Rose made his name.  In his two seasons there he won the league, never lost a home game and reached the semi-final and quarter-final stages of the Europa League.  Salzburg also beat Celtic home and away in 2018 under his control.

We always suspected Real were beyond our reach, but we now know that Shakhtar was not a ‘gimmie’ and have already picked up three points on the road.  Leipzig will remain a weak second seed, but not as weak as they were on Tuesday.

A year ago, Celtic offloaded Shakhtar’s new signing and two-goal hero on Tuesday, Marian Shved.  We almost certainly did not see the best of Shved, but I suspect that Shakhtar fans have seen an unsustainably high level of output from him.  Their stats against Leipzig suggest it was a freak result: five attempts, four of them on target, all of which went in the net, from 32% possession.

As it stands, the group is wide open, but Celtic have ground to make up, either by matching Shakhtar’s away win in Germany, or beating the Ukrainian’s in Warsaw on Wednesday.  It is a difficult task, but why else do we want to be in the Champions League?

Giovanni van Bronkhorst suggested it was “Too much to ask” for Newco to compete with Ajax and Liverpool in the Champions League.  I wonder if that phrase was part of the £60/basic seat ticket campaign.

“What Celtic fans want to know [Gio], is where is all the Seville money?”, to coin a phrase that started a blog a long time ago.

We’ll pick up on that topic later.

  1. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 8TH SEPTEMBER 2022 1:13 PM

    Good analysis.

  2. SFTB @ keyboard abuse

I’ll stop you there with your overblown analysis — poor at every level that it is.

Our MF needs more shape / structure / positioning.

    Our MF needs better tacklers.

MO’R still has time to learn to go from OK to good.

CMcG does not — if he ups the effort he usually gets sent off.

    Plus his positioning is poor.

At his worst he is playing hide and seek behind the opposition CF.

See B/G x 2 for more than enough evidence.

Not his fault — he is not a natural DM / pivot.

  3. Turkeybhoy

Watch for an early rule change from Truss where if you don’t vote you are voting no.

  4. SFTB

Your post showed that you are perfectly aware of the wrestling with a pig analogy…..so, why do you not take note of it?

I suppose you are adopting the ` Hope springs eternal` philosophy and for that I admire you but, in the case of MM, there is no hope.

  5. Maeda is pressing the keeper while GG presses the left back. It could have been the other way round but Maeda was brought on to press higher up the pitch than Abada.

Calmac is pressing Modric who’s sitting in front of their defence.

It takes ten seconds to move the ball from Alaba in the right back position to Vinicius Jr.

Calmac would need to cover 80 yards in ten seconds to get anywhere near making an interception or putting in a challenge

When we dont have the ball we dont have a sitting midfielder to disrupt those sort of moves and we wont unless Ange changes the way we play. Taking one of the three midfielders out of the high press we employ changes it completely. Makes it much easier to play through

Someone asked a few days ago how you beat a high press – that’s one way if you have players with the highest technical skill levels. It was an exceptional team goal. It’s why they’re the best club side in Europe.

  6. Brighton? Seriously? We are going to see Ange linked with every job going in the coming months. Maybe I am naive, but he strikes me as the kind of man who will stay with us for a few years as long as the Club supports him and backs him. He has a vision of where he wants to take Celtic and the board is backing him as best they can.

Never say never and all that, but I don’t think he is at Celtic as part of a career plan to manage in the EPL.

  7. For me CalMac was our man of the match v Madrid.

Like every Human ever born the day will come when he will be replaced but in the meantime let’s look at past 6 Seasons, 46/55/59/52/49/52 .

That is in total 313 appearances for Celtic in 6 years as well as International games,

In total 426 Appearances under Neil, Ronny, Rodgers & Ange.

You would wonder how these idiot Managers would keep playing him,

The man is an absolute Legend, fractured cheekbone, he is back in a mask.

I can’t say enough about the ghuy,

  8. Full focus now for Wednesday. I can’t see us playing this weekend. Gio gets a reprieve, they were not in a good place this week, Pittodrie would have been a big test for them.

  9. Daughter just text me saying all MP’s have left parliament and BEEB have cleared their tv schedule.

  10. As I still see it, we will get a better result off them by time Spain rolls around.

Bold-to-plucky attempts by our done-us-proud bhoys against Los Blancos. IMO, some were a bit off their personal bests: When did we last see our x2 big defenders end up on their khybers’ leaving us well exposed?

Ange seems miffed cos he knows a few of his picks kinda squibbed it when the gilt-edged chances appeared.

Talk of us scouting that goal-sneak seems well-founded given our potshot profligacy at this level.

It’s not that we can’t finish brilliantly, but doing it when pressure/stakes are sky high is a different test I guess.

Callum MacG was as imperious as I’ve seen him in the hoops. Mooy has a cool hand look that’s so good for us.

Haksa looks a potent weapon in glimpses so far. Time to give Tony another run for my money.

So much to admire about this freshly assembled team.

Ange’s ambitions are way bigger than Brighton. A small worry at a time of great opTIMism.

The only whey is up, baby.

Parliament still in session. For my sins, I am watching the energy costs debate. Tbf, the benches are fairly sparsely occupied

  13. From the angle that I have at games I do not always see what banners are being shown by the Green Brigade. That was the case of Tuesday night. What was very clear was the lighting of flares. Now we are told that a young nine year old Bhoy was injured by one of these flares.

Less important than the injury to the lhad is the fact that once more Celtic will be fined by UEFA for this action of idiots who never seem to learn. Their little thrill at setting off a flare is more important than the fact that once more Celtic fans will be blamed for the actions of a few.

If the Green Brigade have any control over these idiots or, hopefully not, are responsible for setting off the flares then they should cease doing so or let it be known that they disagree with flares.

  14. It’s all down to Liz Truss,

I reckon Lizzie took one look at her and said Boris and now Truss, eff this for a game of soldiers, I’m outta here,

  15. Don’t know if it’s been mentioned before, but on my first sight of Haksabanovic on Tuesday night, I thought Big Yogi was back.

    Anyone else?

  16. Hopefully the Huns wont see sense and do what we did post Seville. Paying down debt, controlling spending wages and taking a longer term view to our transfer spending didnt stop us from winning 4 out of the next 5 titles, losing one on the last day, and from being the most competitive we’ve been in the big cup for the last 45 years. 2 x last 16s while living life in MON’s slow lane seems almost impossible to fathom now.

Its the sort of longer term thinking that would be mean they’d be more likely to offer us a more serious challenge over a longer period. But I dont think they’re capable of that, I think there are other things behind it and they’ll revert to type, if they’re still in charge.

They aren’t capable of learning the harshest of lessons. They chased a solvent, careful but very well-run Celtic with a clear vision and a successful model, with short termism and poor decisions and paid the ultimate price.

You can see it happening right now. Under Gerrard they wanted to beat us in a game, they did it, Gerrard lost his shit and they thought that was it. They achieved their short term goal and then wondered why the league didnt follow. Then when they finally won the league they thought they’d cracked it and failed the next season. This time they thought all they had to do was get into the champions league, end the journey, take their seat at the top table and they’d done the job.

Lookout Ange and his language, its not about winning games, being happy with achievements, its about striving to be the best you can be. Compare the reactions to playing in the CL this week. We go toe to toe for 90 minutes against the worlds best and Ange looks like he’s totally gutted to have fallen short. They go in at half time 3-0 down and go to a back 5. GvB then tells the world that they can’t compete, even though the Ajax wage bill is the same as theirs and their net transfer spend is far lower than his own clubs.

Whats the point of even qualifying?

  18. Hello guys haven’t read back as I’m still reading Live Updates. Hope the link below works

A Bhoy from the Brig, Shug Valenti, is living in Indonesia and is asking for some help. He is trying to start up a local football team that needs everything a team would need. The locals are very poor and you see young kids playing in their bare feet. Shug is looking any help he can get, boots, Celtic tops, socks etc or even your hard earned cash.

With so much history in Elizabeth’s time, I wonder if some countries will take the opportunity to go full republic e.g. Canada, Aus, NZ?

Cheers mate. I used to have Celtic Quizzes with my friends in my youth. Sadly, most people I now know have little interest in Celtic. I played 6-a-side football on Monday night, and I was the ONLY one who had watched the derby game! BTW they are all from a nationalist / Catholic background (hope that doesnt sound sectarian – but I think you get what I am saying).

  24. With us playing Livi at Home and the Huns Away to Aberdeen, I really hope the Queen gets well soon.

  25. Not too bothered by Hun game being cancelled, If she hangs in until 3 pm on Saturday, I’ll say a prayer for her,

  26. I’ll never be able to get my head around working class people crying and banging on about the royal family. The concept is utterly ridiculous. A life of pure privilege while others can look forward to food banks.

Simple, really. Those working class people have been told forever how wonderful the royal family is. Brainwashing works.

After Seville our finances collapsed and the bank had to invite us round for a chat — £4mill negative cashflow in 2004/05.

    .

We then had to have a heavily discounted rights issue to bring things to some sort of balance to proceedings and keep the bank happy.

Selling SP/1999 helped and WGS got lucky with AB and SN but our board can’t preach to anyone regarding the successful running of a football club.

They snore while sometimes the manager puts in a shift.
