Dedryck, Jozo, Erik, Rivaldo and Jason

145

Two years ago Celtic made a call on the fitness of Jozo Simunovic after receiving specialist advice from Harley St. It was a value judgement on a player who has blossomed into an excellent defender, but who requires a specific training regime and is rested at times.

There are parallels with Rivaldo Coetzee, who failed his medical despite his injury never interrupting his professional career thus far. Celtic’s recruitment format is evident, buy and develop talent who can be retained or sold at a profit, but the latter option is only available if the player can pass a medical, and for Coetzee, that means an operation and recuperation period.

Brendan has the option of playing Kris Ajer in central defence from the youth ranks, or can move Mikael Lustig inside. Nir Bitton could be moved there for domestic football, but I don’t think we’ll see the Israeli at centre half in the Champions League group stage.

We have a first-choice pairing, but as has been illustrated with Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko both out injured, while Jozo needed to be rested, we could do with cover who can operate at Champions League level.

Teenage Jason Denayer’s trajectory looked assured when he left Celtic in 2015 but the years have not been kind. He played second fiddle at Galatasaray for a year before being a jack-of-all-trades at Sunderland – once playing the No. 10 role. Needless to say, there are those who don’t see the potential in him we did.

The parallels with Dedryck Boyata, his Belgium international teammate, are striking. Dedryck was developmentally ahead of Jason when the latter joined Celtic in 2014, but that picture changed when Brendan Rodgers put Dedryck on a firm path, as Jason’s stock went the way of Sunderland’s.

The player would be a hugely popular signing for Celtic, but he’s just one name in what’s sure to be a stressful next 24 hours.

We should try for Michael Padzan of Legia Warsaw. Experienced. Current international (with 5th ranked team). Maybe £3m? Might be less, Legia are not making much money from European Football this year. If not him, then a similar profile. Rather than a Man City reserve.

Linking two themes, maybe Denayer’s year with us was just a flash in the pan?

Exactly! That’s why they all looked up to Costacurta, who’s very far from being a giant (physically, at any rate)!

  4. I call it the old bubble gum players swop card in here every time a window is about to close, some do get carried away like kids it’s fun, but some get a bit serious with it, …want him…don’t want him…had him…..swapped him….don’t like him…. to funny :))

  5. We don’t need to sign a centre back we need to sign the right centre back. A big powerful defender that can’t take the ball under pressure and play a pass will make mistake after mistake in our system.

I’m not worried about next summer, we have CL games to play and I want the best possible players to make the best possible team this season. Loan or permanent doesn’t matter, Denayer may lack match sharpness, but he’s not going to be unfit training with Guardiola. I would be delighted if he signs.

Also I’d be shocked if we spent any kind of serious money on a 3rd choice striker

According to a report they are trying to sign a guy from Cardiff named Declan John.

Monkey Media will love that.Their very own Declan.

Don’t know the player but generally I’d expect more plundering of teams who failed to qualify. Then again they failed to qualify because they’re not good enough, but they must have some talent.

In this case, just imagining how the conversation would go. Assuming they’ve not blocked his number.

    ‘Hi, its Peter…’

And that would be the end of that one.

  10. We would be better splashing the cash on a good striker now than wait til January,or next summer, unless we have tapped up a good Bosman

Denayer was easily the best footballing centre back we’ve had for many years.

He’d be excellent in a Brendan team.

The talk of another loan striker who may be a marksman or just fire blanks is really a bore and honestly thought CQN was a different calibre.

Ooh aye, forgot about that, lol.

He was a suggestion, rather than recommendation. I just feel there must be decent defenders, currently plying their trade in less “fashionable” Leagues (Eastern Europe, Balkans, Scandinavian countries etc) that have a bit of experience and could do a job for us in the CL.

Even if they are fit, Boyata and Jozo are inexperienced, especially at CL level, and the same goes for the likes of Denayer.

  14. My dad would be 88 today.God bless. With all this transfer talk, I remember the day we signed Joe Mc Bride and he said”Great! just exactly what we need”.Probably still the best natural striker I have seen in the hoops.HH.

I’d agree but you’d have to think the club would certainly know and have looked at every defender playing in mid level leagues and probably been quoted astronomical fees where any enquiry was made.

It would stand to reason that clubs in these leagues would struggle to knock back £3m-£5m but the deal has to be right for everyone and we probably don’t appreciate the complexity of nearly every deal now – complicated by agents in the majority of cases,

It is more likely that Ross County had a sell on fee for Jacko. Hope he does well, a good player and a great lad.

  19. Sunderland could sign Messi and make him look clumsy and ordinary. They are like a footballing anti-garage that creates problems in players that weren’t there previously.

If Brendan is ok signing Denayer then so am I.If he’s the manager we think he is there’s no way he’d accept a player who is not up to the job and out of shape.I understand Denayer might lack match sharpness but unfit and out of shape, can’t see it.

And we already know there’s a player in there.

Maybe we should trust the manager and let him get on with it.

    Transfer windows are rubbish.

  20. traditionalist88 on

@AlisonGConroy I’m told Jason Denayer won’t be making a return to Celtic before the transfer deadline.
