Dedryck, Jozo, Erik, Rivaldo and Jason

145

Two years ago Celtic made a call on the fitness of Jozo Simunovic after receiving specialist advice from Harley St. It was a value judgement on a player who has blossomed into an excellent defender, but who requires a specific training regime and is rested at times.

There are parallels with Rivaldo Coetzee, who failed his medical despite his injury never interrupting his professional career thus far. Celtic’s recruitment format is evident, buy and develop talent who can be retained or sold at a profit, but the latter option is only available if the player can pass a medical, and for Coetzee, that means an operation and recuperation period.

Brendan has the option of playing Kris Ajer in central defence from the youth ranks, or can move Mikael Lustig inside. Nir Bitton could be moved there for domestic football, but I don’t think we’ll see the Israeli at centre half in the Champions League group stage.

We have a first-choice pairing, but as has been illustrated with Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko both out injured, while Jozo needed to be rested, we could do with cover who can operate at Champions League level.

Teenage Jason Denayer’s trajectory looked assured when he left Celtic in 2015 but the years have not been kind. He played second fiddle at Galatasaray for a year before being a jack-of-all-trades at Sunderland – once playing the No. 10 role. Needless to say, there are those who don’t see the potential in him we did.

The parallels with Dedryck Boyata, his Belgium international teammate, are striking. Dedryck was developmentally ahead of Jason when the latter joined Celtic in 2014, but that picture changed when Brendan Rodgers put Dedryck on a firm path, as Jason’s stock went the way of Sunderland’s.

The player would be a hugely popular signing for Celtic, but he’s just one name in what’s sure to be a stressful next 24 hours.

Not too sure about Denayer coming back. Thought he was destined for great things after his season with us. Haven’t been particularly impressed with what I have seen of him since.

Pity about Coetzee – seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

May well end up with someone who hasn’t been mentioned.

    Definitely need someone though.

  2. Ron- :) Denayer was good in the air though not the tallest, great pace and a good man marker HH

  3. G67- like you , not mad about loan signings, but Denayer for example, would buy us some time, and he knows the club.I have posted a few times that we should try and get a good quality striker in for £5-7 mil, and going by the mad prices lately, it will only get more expensive…

All systems go for 11/11,old bean. Usual time and place!

  5. Wee Jason is not the first player to have lost his way in the churn culture of the EPL, fast defender decent in the air for his size, wouldn’t break my heart if he came back and he has great hair:))

    !BADA BING!

Brexit might have a bearing on availability too,esp wrt work permit issues.

Two years time, certain EU players will not be eligible to play down south, but I think we apply different criteria in Scotland which might tipthings back in our favour.

  7. I bet Kenny Miller is listening to the Jozo Simunovic transfer speculation with interest. I wonder if he will give his thoughts when he lands.

  8. We now have countries buying players for clubs in the case of PSG, I have no idea how this complies with FFP within football , it looks like the super rich clubs are putting up two fingers to any attempts to curb their spending by any governing body or get smarter about how they make the sums add up.

Celtic are a well known and well supported football club, this seems not to matter at all, I read somewhere that should Messi leave Barcelona he will earn 1million a week, where do Celtic fit in to this new game and are we even wanted?

Be worth it to get a couple of loans in in the next day or so, just to see the usual mob on here go ballistic.

Mods might be on overtime if thats the case.

  10. Big Jozo is a splendid natural defender, but Celtic gamble millions on him now, every time he plays.

Astana – taking BR’s official excuse – is the perfect example. Big lead, so he’s rested. We wobble a bit for 20 minutes and we can’t call on him.

If he can’t play, he can’t format defensive understandigns and partnerships, can’t refine them; crucial for those CL moments the game can turn on.

I tthink he’s our finest CB since VVD, a better defender than VVD, but if some bland EPL side want to give us £30 million and take him – and Jozo wants to go – Celtic would be mental not cash in our chips on him and go find an injury-free CB to replace him.

Jason Denayer was great for us but I’v eseen him live twice since, with Sunderland, and he looked unfit, unwilling and lost. Put it this way – he’s not ready to face up to Neymar; probably months from the required level.

I’d rather go with Lustig and Boyata at CB pairing.

  11. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

No thanks to Jason DeNayer at this time — he will not do at Centre Half at Champions League level in his current condition and that is a fact.

We need a Centre Half — a good experienced solid centre who will come in and do a job just the way Marc Reiper, Stan Varga and big Ramon Vega did. Even better if you can unearth a Mjalby who was not a huge household name when he walked through the Parkhead gates.

But — all the talk about Azmoun to Lazio was in June or the early part of July. The guy is a superstar in the making — not a Guidetti or a Bangura or a Pukki — this is the real deal, a huge talent and he is STILL at Rostov and would move to a Champions League team.

Go on Celtic — spend the VVD money — offer a record fee £12M plus — you will double your money!!

Surely Odsonne has plenty of SCOPE to improve as a player.

We should definitely go for it, I hope PL can PELLET off.

  13. South Of Tunis on

    Jozo Simunovic .

Confused -in the wee beach bar –

World Cup qualifiers stuff on the tele .

Wee item re Bosnia — info included speculation re the possibility of Simunovic making his debut for Bosnia . Has he switched his nationality -if so when ?

  14. Boyata is injured. has been for months, Coetzee should have been brought in then…giving us time to look for his replacement! Why do we look to buy from England? Especially AMn City.. We should not be paying to take any player n Loan unless an agreement to buy is already in place. Which is what we had with FF.

Yes, but don’t forget he had 1.82M Alessandro ‘Lofty’ Costacurta alongside him!

Denayer? Not for me. Not good enough to improve us, and we don’t need no more loans.
