Defence need to play-up for their keeper

812

First the treble then the double slipped through the net leaving Celtic absolute certainties for the inaugural Scottish Premiership title, but with only a couple of higher aspirations to aim for.  Fraser Forster is closing in on Bobby Clark’s Aberdeen league shut out record, which if he keeps a clean sheet at home to St Johnstone on Sunday, he would be able to eclipse 31 minutes into the visit to Tynecastle on 22 February.

Neil Lennon called Saturday’s defeat unacceptable but it would be just as unacceptable to concede to St Johnstone at home this weekend when so close to an all-time record.    Saints have scored only one league goal away from home (at Firhill) since winning at Tynecastle on 2 November last year.  Notwithstanding their four Cup goals at Forfar on Saturday, you could not wish for a more goal-shy league visitors.

The manager was rightly critical of his defence on Saturday so will hopefully use this weekend to ensure they are ready to play up for their goalkeeper this Sunday.

One of the highlights for the Celtic community last year was the incredible Ben Nevis Huddle, completed on the snow-capped mountain in June. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, 28 June. Applications opened on Friday and there are only 77 places left (big mountain but limited safe standing capacity). Go here if you want to get involved.

Is it possible you’ve misunderstood the song?

    He also wrote this.

    “The Sign”

    -Eric Bogle

In the summer of last year, in a city far from here

That stands on the shores of the fair Pacific sea

I walked its pleasant streets, no view in mind, no one to meet

Content to wander where my aimless feet led me

A few streets from my hotel, I passed an old stone wall

Where three words had been scrawled by an unknown hand

When I read them I stopped dead, in disbelief I shook my head

For the words on that wall read, “Free Bobby Sands”

As the sun began to fall, and the day began to die

Thought I heard the wild geese call, from a dark and empty sky

For long minutes I stood there, in that busy thoroughfare

While the past rose sharp and clear in my mind’s eye

I saw it all again, the passion, hate, and pain

The indifference and the shame as a young man died

But it was all so long ago, and who now cares or knows

Why Bobby Sands chose his lonely death?

But to the one who wrote that sign,

It seems that Bobby’s light still shines

The words rang from another time,

    But the paint was fresh

As the sun began to fall, and the day began to die

Thought I heard the wild geese call, from a dark and empty sky

So I went down to the sea, to let it’s wild song comfort me

But my thoughts would not let me be, and unchecked they ran

Through my future, present, and past,

Not for the first time nor the last

I heard them ask, “Could you be the kind of man

Who would gladly sacrifice everything, even life

And put no price on a cause, or an ideal?”

No answer echoed in my heart, so I turned and I walked back

Through the twilight’s deepening dark, to my hotel.

Scott Brown was wrong against Barca but we used to forgive our players their transgressions. Why should Johnny Doyle be forgiven because 10 men did his work while Scott Brown gets it because his 10 men did not cover for him?

it’s a disgusting piece of drivel, disparaging the sentimentality of one particular group, whilst ignoring the same shit that goes on for the Scottish diaspora.

Every exiled people exhibit this, but Bogle thought it was funny for us…. too-ral-loo-ral-lay. He’s a hoot…. he pissed off to Australia and got all sentimental about what he’d left behind.

And he’s only an exhibit, for the rank hypocrisy that presents itself as humour.

Anyone who thinks that the policy was operated solely by the management lives in a dream world -the craft unions were full participants – Communist or not

Perhaps it was easier not to bring it up but that’s what was going down

I await your evidence of him speaking out or saying anything about it

Trade unions are not always progressive in such matters as women found out for decades

It is possible that he meant both emotions. There are many who can admire Irish people displaying Irish Nationalism but have a problem accepting Scots born or Aussie born expressing affinity with their roots.

The lyrics don’t leave much room for misunderstanding. They say it’s alright for Christy to sing this but not for a fellow Aussie, or, by extension, a Scots or Irish born Aussie citizen. The word Plastic offends and it is meant to.

  14. ernie,

    No, there is no misinterpretation.

I’m aware of that song, and I’m aware how radical and incisive it would make him seem, but he was sing about the “genuine” irish, not me and mine, not the ones that fled the famine, and all they had left was songs and air. I despise this disparaging of the poorest of all, those that are looking to claw some pride – however misplaced – from a life of misery.

What happens to that plan when PL sell a couple of the team against Lenny’s wishes ?

Problems again for the manager, and he will be held accountable, he is doing a wonderful job all things considered.

I believe the signing policy is the root of the problem as you’re never gonna have a settled team for more than a year or two. Then you get players that come to the club simply to put themselves in the EPL shop window. Those two added together are a recipe for disaster. Just go back to the start of the Lennon Era & you will notice that once any of players become hot property (injuries aside) they don’t sign new contracts. Whether or not this is due to them being offered very slight increases in their current contract or the knowledge that they can get double or even triple that over the border I don’t know.

I would really like to know how much Hooper, Wanyama & Ledley were all offered to sign contract extensions before they left the club. Something I am aware of though, is that financial income doesn’t allow to have more than two players over the 20k£ mark.

  18. ernie

I thought he’d make it specific then that all rubbish folk singers deserved criticism.

Why bring the nationality of the songs into it?

Are we to have Irish songs sung by Irish people only? Should Eric Bogle never sing Burns songs again once he took Aussie citizenship?

I cannot see the innocence in this one. I like Eric Bogle but I’ve always hated that song, that phrase (even when used by genuine Irish people) and that sentiment.

DjYNWA, Agreed we are stuck with Brown for the moment and as i mentioned earlier we need to mange our comings & goings after selling the spine of our team & not adequately replacing same. Yes think Ledley was sold on cheap but thats PL the man who put Profit&Loss into the PLC’s department, who didn’t asset manage properly or maybe JL on top of selling our 3 best players would have been a “trick” too far!

    Cliftonville Celt, thanks,

Exiled Tim, its all going a bit pear shaped for PL at present & the peg may become more shoogly if he sells the assets. If FF or wants to go then if there is nothing we can do so be it, if VVD was to be “traded” then many fans will throw in the towel & support from afar imo, we have brought in £78m now is the time for stability & backing the manager the fans have had enough smoke & mirrors from the PLC!!!

    What a load of bollocks

When did Irish traditonal music have integrity, when did it stop shifting and changing, and how was “plastic paddy” a term that would re-inforce that.

Let’s give them time and opportunity to develop an understanding.

Lenny has pushed for a couple of players, and got them, he pushed for Hooper, proven right, he was vocal about LG, got him, he will do the biz for us no doubt.

I can’t recall any other he has publicly touted, LG was obviously way down his list, but I reckon he stood his ground with him, or he would have been left with a bigger balance sheet and no striker.
