Defences, views and runs

We can take some comfort in the fact that Salzburg have lost three games on the bounce but they sit in second spot in the Austrian Bundesliga, Celtic are fourth in the Scottish Premiership and have won only one of their previous five games.  The Austrians will see just as much comfort in our form.

Success on Thursday will be determined by who manages to overcome their frailties most effectively.  As far as Celtic are concerned, that will mean trying to find the kind of defensive performance that we put in last season.

Our reason for most confidence should be the speed which we can break at, and Salzburg’s only defensive issues.  They shipped three goals to Sturm Graz and Malmo in recent outings.

Many thanks to everyone who has already taken our ‘Who we are and Our Values’ survey, it took just over 1 hour to register 1,000 submissions.  It’ll take you little more than 5 minutes to share your view on some important matters, take a look here.

I’m a wee bit late to the party but I’ve signed up for the Great Scottish Run on 5 October to assist Celtic Foundation’s work in the areas of health, equality, poverty, and learning.  If you’ve already registered with the event, or you have a pair of trainers and an outrageous disregard for the aging process, get involved.

You can register for the Great Scottish Run here and with the Foundation be emailing them, details here.

This is our club, they are your trainers, that is your outrageous disregard for the aging process.  Let’s do it.

    I agree with you that it is important that countries take responsibility for their mistakes.

    I do not agree that ‘Icelandic’ were the architects of their own downfall.

    Sure there were a small cabal of Icelandic bankers and willing politicians who had access to easy money, or money for nothing, but not Iceland as a whole. The same could be said of people all over the world who have had their lives ripped from under them during what is called ‘austerity’. This was a deliberate campaign of financial fraud aimed at people who do not have the time or knowledge to comprehend credit default swaps, derivatives,financial regulations, and how Larry Summers changed The Game..

    Below is a link to an review of an excellent documentary that explains what happened (and is still happening), with respect to the Global Credit Crisis, with accurate reviews from people who know. Iceland plays a major part in the story….

    Who to Blame?

    Would like to know your thoughts…

    As I think the negative campaign from WM relates to the above…..

    Currently the people of Scotland recognize they are in a mess and are trying to fix it. There are powerful interests do not want a Yes, they do not want an example of Civic responsibility and Political engagement that Scotland is currently exemplifying.

    Other citizens are watching with keen interest too…

    Just about the same reasoning I have had. Would much prefer to stand or fall based on our own decisions.

    Westminster’s interests, and the interests of the South Eastern centre of power, are their own – and fair play to them. It is unrealistic to expect there not to be an element of self-interest in how a London-centric power and finance base acts, and makes decisions.

    They act in their interests.

    We should act in ours.

    Like Tom, I’ve changed from a Naw to a very firm Aye.

    Yes. You finally get it.

    It is called responsibility.

    I like what you write about fitba.I disagree with your on the referendum.

    =================

    I get responsibility and standing on your own two feet OK and I also think you learn from that experience, often painfully if you make unwise choices. I did.

    However taking responsibility means thinking through what you are doing to achieve whatever end you wish to be responsible for (without the pain if possible.)

    Without purpose, without an aim what is there to be responsible (and accountable) for?

    Voting Labour, Tory, SNP etc is not an end, it is all a means to an end as set out by each party when they seek a mandate.

    Indy is no different , it is just a means towards going about achieving the ends that we vote a party in to achieve.

    A sign of maturity is taking responsibility, but the evidence responsibility has been taken responsibly is in what it achieves.

    Kris Commons?

    He is a Glory Hunter..

    =====================

    On Saturday he unleashed a 30 yard effort that flew high and wide. On the tv replay from behind him you see Scepovic making a run into the clear directly ahead of Kris; no more than a 5 yard straighforward pass to put Scepovic in on goal.

    Instead, Commons wasted the opportunity with the wild shot.

    It half backs up your theory – looking at it, it’s so obviously the selfish choice. Commons football brain is much better than that; he saw the run, but I believe chose the shot due to either greed, or, I lean more to, attempting to prove himself with the spectacular to cement him in Deila’s plans.

    But I can’t see the latter transpiring. He’s not the archetype Deila wants. Guile will be sacrificed for fitness and efficiency; certainly in the major games. The only way RD can make his system work is primarily with athletes.

    That may be his undoing. You need a bit of…the metaphysical; some left-field instinct to bedazzle at the top level.

    We need someone. We only have Commons; he is as close as we get to the undefinable. But the price of a top athlete with footballing sorcery in his boots?

  16. Sandman, fair enough. It’ll be over soon. We can get back to slagging players, managers and formations and the country can go to hell in a handcart ( no don’t know what that means either). :-)

    If I knew the aim of Independence I might be able to gauge better if it would meet it.

    I heard Salmond say it was for a fairer society.

    I agree with the idea OK but just what is it when it stops being an idea and becomes reality ? How will I know? What will be done to achieve it? What are the risks, how will they be minimised?

    As it stands the “plan” sounds similar to the one Charles Green sold the SFA after Rangers dumped their debts in liquidation and whose successors are running without a line of credit.

    All on the SNP’s watch too.

    If one of the aims of Independence is to get rid of bedroom tax or stop decline in social spend, which I think would be indicators of a fairer society, why not use the tax varying powers to tax only us Scots if a fairer society is our objective?

    I’d be more than happy to pay more, in fact the reduction in benefits cost me a good few bob to help a family member. I’d been even happier to help more than one through extra tax.

    Its not that I’m a No, its that I doubt Yes is the only answer to producing a fairer society.

    I need to go to bed, but I have a fairly simple view of the 2008 collapse.

    (1) Property prices in USA and Europe were rising and “going to rise forever”;

    (2) Governments loosened controls on banks;

    (3) as (1) was true it was “safe” for banks to lend money to anyone as the rising prices would cover any default;

    (4) bankers earned bonuses on lending, not on the returns achieved;

    (5) the borrowers in (3) defaulted;

    (6) The governments (us) picked up the bill. The bankers picked up their bonuses;

    (7) Elves were not involved.

    Iceland bought into (3) more than most countries and the Icelanders ended up with (6). I well remember the interest rates their banks were offering.

    Fortunately I also remembered the old adage that “if it is too good to believe, it probably is”. Others weren’t so lucky.

    I still think Iceland was the architect of their losses. The Icelandic have also taken responsibility for their recovery. They never tried to blame their problems on elves.

    I like Iceland. I like the Icelandic and their elves.

    My sister had an interesting thought on the monarchy today when chatting.

    She has no time for it and indeed we think it is the totem around which the WM elite dance. However she did admire the Queen as a person doing a good job and respected the persona but not the paraphinalia.

    Her thought was that when the Queen dies the Monarchy will be a lot less respected in England and be on a shoogly peg.

    I would not rule that out.(if rule is the right word)
