Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

  1. Mick11.

    Exactly right.

Delia might have the biggest and best philosophies on football in the world. His view on football might be the correct one….

But when you are in charge of 15 full internationals, you best ensure they respect you.. They buy in to your philosophy, and ultimately they give their all on the park for you.

Something tells me this ain’t happening. And going by Browns comments, there are players there, not giving their all.

It’s a thin line in the management game, between having the dressing room onside or losing the dressing room.

My estimation is that Delia’s Mowbray moment, would come very soon if it wasn’t for the international break.

  2. Twentyfirstofmaynineteenseventynine. …18 42

Jeez pal that’s some mouth full……….Ronny should give him an axe and a bow and arrow and forget about the football boots.

  3. Welcome Owen John.

Your reaction to being asked if you were a gun gave me a chuckle.

    Keep up the good work.

Hope you have lots of fun on CAN.

  4. ruggygman- have to agree, his next defeat will be his last. A sideways move to Lennoxtown possibly?

If, I was in control at CP – Hugh Keevins – would have been recruited years ago, onto the executive / board level of the club.

HK is an absolute – Celtic Oracle – imho.

Is there anyone at the highest level’s of Celtic FC/PLC who can amass the same amount of Celtic knowledge than HK?

The only person who comes close as a Celtic Oracle is – Gerry McNee. imho

A shrewd operative at the highest level of the club would have, recruited these two Celtic-minded gents – years ago, instead of being paranoid about them. imho

  6. Ronny’s biggest problem for me is his persistence in a formation that isn’t working and is unpopular with the fans.

Going with only two in midfield would be ok if they were Murdoch and McStay, two wingers and one striker is ok if it’s Lennox, Johnstone and Van Hooijdonk and the man behind is Moravcik.

Let’s get three in midfiled and a front two pairing.

Those who voted yes were voting for a currency union.

    Alex Salmond said so.

Those who voted yes are unionists.

    We are all unionists.

    It’s no longer an insult.

  8. Still think international break is the time to let him go with less team impact. I really did want him to turn the corner but we’re on a roundabout!

Too many inconsistencies in what he says and does and if he is like that in the dressing room….

A mix of Clark,Larsson,Hartson and Sutton for me but ASAP

  9. Bada……………What on earth has happened to Henderson ??………..did he have a shandy ??…..or god forbid….a coke ??…….pre season …………..Can’t really understand it……not even in the picture…….

  10. People can rant all they want….I’ve been very guilty in the past…….but the true barometer of what will force change is the attendances.

For Scottish domination RD inherited are reasonable squad of players….he has blooded some youths and he has been given resources……..Craig Gordon for a 10M FF is excellent business by the way IMO.

The team are currently sitting 6th in the division……..however?

Its a race to the bottom and has been for a number of years now…….even when the orcs were at full strength Gordon Strachan was working minor miracles with down sizing of quality and reduced budgets.

Lawell is the Provident Cheque money collector (remember that guy?)…..if you keep paying wonga like interest then he will keep collecting it…..on behalf of his masters and for a generous commission of course.

Celtic is the biggest gig of RD’s life…why would he not take the job?

Would any of us reject a trial or a contract with Celtic because we didn’t think were up to the mark…of course not!

The problem is the 4 largest shareholders and their interest collector………until the stadium is empty nothing will change…..

    It is what it is…….

  11. If Ronny eventually builds a top class team at Celtic and then loses Virgil, Denayer and Guidetti go back to Man City and some of the other loanees are reeled back by their clubs, does he build again.

  12. After watching the sport on STV I’m deeply sorry that I missed Accies winning the World Cup, Champions League and SPFL this weekend!!

Come on Ronny, sort it out and ram it down their throats!

    its not an insult

neither is calling the yes voters seperatists

that was the choice on offer

and the currency question was a valid decision to make a choice on

my only point is those who voted yes cant complain about being called seperatists, and those who voted no cant complain about being called unionists

that was the choice on the ballot paper

  14. vinniethedog- strange as he came with a reputation of developing young players, just like LH.As i have posted before when PL was talking up RDs attributes,it looked the perfect job description for Lennoxtown.

  15. Joe Filippis Haircut on

hankray. I can see a problem there although we will have Pukki and Balde back. H.H.:-(

  16. its been obvious from the start of the season we lack a ball playing midfield player (Biton is the closest we have to that type of player).

RD prefers to use brown and johanson – neither is comfortable in that role and think in the case of brown it actually reduces his impact on the game. Johansons passing is awful but i like his energy. I think both would benefit from this type of player beside them.

Denayer or amborse in that role for now?

this is RD weakest set up and he sticks with it – its frustrating that he can’t see this!!

At the end of the day , the board has built a team on the cheap and we are clutching at straws now , Celtic standards have dropped and hanging on by dreams and hope!!

  17. Liam Henderson is the best midfield prospect we’ve had since Paul McStay. Get him back in the team.

Is there a better Celtic-mind going around – currently – than Hugh Keevins?

Btw, I’m not talking about the ‘boreds’ carefully planted lackeys.

    ——

Nope, he’s wonderful, splendid, so so so Celtic minded.

In fact I think we should build a statue atop The Celtic Way for him!!!

    Hugh for Pope.

  19. Owen John … how do we know u aren’t a hun ?

I’m reminded of the great escape .

Thanks for your kind words .

I usually outwit them with my intellect!!

    That ain’t hard mind u!!!

  23. Ernie Lynch…playing on words “we are all unionists”..because of Salmonds proposed ” currency union”…no i aint having that..because you have the intelligence to play on words doesnt make you intelligent.

I voted YES…i wanted no union with the brits whatsoever, because you vote for a party or in a referendum doesnt meen you agree with everything that your party or side proposes…i am no unionist ,i am supporter of a free Independent Scotland….

  24. and another thing , while i’m ranting :) our academy needs to be used (henderson , fisher , etc..) . The young lad o’connell who came in at center back looks a sensible young player with good positioning but he’s not really a center back is he ??

For me , in modern day football , a center back needs to be big , strong , powerful , athletic – not since Bobo have we had this type of player.

We NEVER look threatening at attacking corners and we NEVER look comfortable defending corners – no height / power in the team.

    if i was manager……….

  25. Burghbhoy

The worse ones are the ones who don’t bother about football unlesss Celtic lose.

    They seriously annoy me.

  26. Just watched the highlight package

    1) We created enough chances to win the game but fluffed them. Guidetti, Griffiths, Stokes and Commons were all culpable. I said after the Aberdeen game that we needed to get our shooting boots on. It’s a simple enough problem to fix.

    2) We still are a bit leaky at the back. Denayer was pretty dodgy against Hamilton. Shouldn’t we be dropping him once we have a fit right-back? Efe is playing out of position and struggling but he and Virgil were solid last season. Why are we developing a player for Manchester City? He isn’t likely to be here long-term.

  27. God help the promising youngster who is Mark Hill.

Over the past six+ years our Nevadan know-all has given us a list of over 30 future superstars that his ‘contacts’ have assured him will be the next Kenny Dalglish.

How many of them have actually made the grade ?

At this point…….. NOT a single ONE.
