Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

If Anthony Stokes had converted even half the chances that he had yesterday this blog would be so different.

    NAIN HEAD

Lost count of the chances we missed yesterday .

Ps I blame Ronny for me missing TnTs tip :)))))

Stay away from negativity and get a text” did you bet it ?” :(((

  2. scotlands shame on

paul67 you are being disingenius about loan signings.

one is guy he knows from norway, one is guy we tried to sign last year, another we have been sniffing about couple of years and one regarded as new kompany and one we have signed is another that has been long term target.

Wakaso might be in your weah remit but he looks better than we have.

On paper we have better team than one we strolled lge with last year.

manager hopeless, we werent playing real madrid yesterday.

football isnt rocket science, those that try to make it so usually fail.

  3. Not having seen the game it’s hard to comment but judging by the various posts from people who were actually in Celtic Park a lot of the blame for this defeat is clearly directed at the players, Ronny cannot be blamed for not putting the ball in the net. At least chances were being created unlike Thursday night against the Croats when the team did not make one chance in the second half. One thing for sure nobody will underestimate Hamilton from now on and every team in the League will be gunning for them.

Like most of supporters it’s a surprise that our so-called marquee signing did not feature. Looking at the team for yesterday it’s practically the the same that streaked through the League last season with the exception of Samara’s and Joe Ledley who are big names to be missing no doubt about it. I was confident of a win yesterday by a couple of goals as the form of the team seemed to be on an upward curve. Hamilton are not going to find life at the top easy.

  6. why all the panic we have a plc who are frothing at the mouth of their beloved sevco on the way back despite fat boy trying to mess it up. we have a great manager who has only taken 10m out of the club in wages justified as he has got rid of all the deadwood ie vic gary h fraz and brought in superstars like puckki baldie etc and all those world class loanees peter just got his team tactics wrong yesterday no reason to get on their backs he l make it up to us by selling virgil in January is it true he would not let Griffiths go to hibs in case cost his beloved sevco promotion we are in good hands with pete and coach ronn

  7. Last night I had the weirdest dream…..Ronny was gone and NFL was back in an interim basis…..I hope this dream does NOT come true as that ship has sailed.

We can all greet and moan about Saturday’s result but let’s not forget 2 seasons ago we suffered the same kind of result at home to ICT after losing1-2 midweek in Lisbon…….we won on Thursday against Zagreb this time……we also went out of the SC away to the same ICT days after winning at Anfield.

On Friday morning the Dynamo players must have woken up and wondered what had went wrong…….played us off the park in the 2nd half yet failed to score….our players must be doing the same thing this morning….Big Jock often said that as long as we are making the chances the goals will come.

When we lost the League Cup 1-4 to the Maryhill Magyars who seemed to score every time they ran up the park….we had a forward line of Johnstone, Dalglish, Hood, Callaghan and Macari…although Jinky left the game early to be replaced by big Cairney after being crippled by Ronnie Glavin!!!!!…we made enough chances in the 2nd half to win 10 games…Jock signed Dixie while still under a 6 match suspension after this game….proof that he thought we needed an out and out striker…..which Ronny needs right now.

I would sacrifice the title this season if it allowed the club to be revolutionised….last season NFL sacrificed our youths in an attempt to go through the season undefeated and a clean sheet record (please don’t mention Liam Henderson as he only played through necessity)…..he padded his CV but failed in the domestic cups and in Europe to a poor Ajax (who tied with Apoel Nicosia in midweek) and AC (who failed to qualify for Europe this season).

I truly believe that we are on the right track…patience a virtue that the modern day Celt doesn’t have is required now.

I look at two “big” clubs…well big in their own country and with European pedigree that had the opportunity to change the culture within their respective clubs.

The 1st one is the obvious…they brought in the “genius” that was PLG…lets curtail that myth right now….BFDJ said on Snyde that PLG liked to take a team that was down in its luck and rebuild them….horse manure and nobody challenged him on it.

He inherited OL from Jacques Santini after they won their 1st title after he left to take over the National position…..he won only 3 of their 1st 9 games but was given time which resulted in 3 more titles.

Time was not what he was given at the bigotdome and due to fan and player power he was given the sugar lump even though they were unbeaten in Europe and topped their group.

As we know naesurname and mcsleekit replaced him and trophies were won but at what cost….they are deid.

The other team is Villa…….founder members of the Football and Premier Leagues…they have the 4th highest total of major honours in England including the Big Cup….however after winning the latter and the Super Cup, the pinnacle of their success, their fortunes dwindled and they were eventually relegated 5 seasons later.

3 seasons on and back in the top division where they had finished runners up to Manre they made the revolutionary move of appointing Dr Jo who had helped guide his national side to the Euro title as well as the ¼ Finals of the WC.

Again player power took over after he introduced more time on the training pitch instead of hanging around pubs and bookies and dared try to change their diet…..they finished 3 places above the relegation zone and Dr Jo was for the “Joe the Toff”.

So where are Villa now…they since the oul Dr are now on their 9th manager…have only won 2 League Cups and 2 Interto Cups….this one of the biggest clubs in the country who while in the old 3rd Division were drawing bigger crowds than local rivals WBA in the First……one of the finest grounds as well….yet they are still hovering around mid table….why…..they failed to move on.

We have the opportunity now to change not only the culture at the club but also the country as well….let’s not blow this in an attempt at fleeting success….and let’s forget the mythical TIAT…it won’t be allowed to happen.

Am I right to assume that Choccy Eclair wouldnt get a game for the new style super fit Celtic ?

  13. My own tuppence worth on Ronny –

I think he’d improve his lot if, when playing wide players, he puts right footed players on the right and left footed on the left. But another crucial related point on this is that we then also need to have someone in the box to put away the expected crosses. Say what you like about big Efe but at least he has the nonce to realise there’s nobody in the middle so doesn’t simply fire balls in.

Playing players on their ‘correct’ side would be a step in the right direction.

Despite all of that we SHOULD have won yesterday simply based on the number of chances we squandered I think we had 8 on target. But the 7 that finished off target were actually our best opportunities but mostly fell to a very unconvincing Anthony Stokes.

I so want Ronny to succeed.but there were so many folk screaming abuse at him from the ole Main Stand yesterday that I fear he’s already a dead man walking.

Might be prepared to settle for a treble rather than the full 4 ;-)

  15. Paul

Have to disagree with you on this one

RD is not experienced enough at our level to be our manager

Lenny should not have been given the job when he was for the same reason

We got away with it because Lenny had at least had the experience of playing in a real professional league and been with our club for a number of years

There are two issues which seem to be getting put together

One is the fitness and diet regime that RD has brought in – this is the basic minimum that the club should expect for the money it pays our players and that should remain long after the present manager leaves.

The other is RD’s inability to use the players at his disposal to the best effect

Paul talks about building a team around SB and SJ – however they need help and RD’s system leaves them far too much to do!

Even teams with poorer players like M’well and Hamilton have proved that

Our three good results have been against DUFC who contributed to their own downfall by playing an open game against us. On the day we got the early goal and picked them off

Yesterday Guidetti missed the early chance and we started to struggle!

Against both Salzburg and Zagreb we got away with it because our GK made a stream of very god saves. If he had missed even one in either game the result would have been quite different

Yesterday at times we played 2-2-6 – often the six were in a static line strung across the pitch

RD reminds me abit of the late TB – who could never get away from the idea that the solution was to throw on more forwards!

Games are won and lost in the middle of the park

Witness how Chelsea yet again dismantled Arsenal because Mourinho plays at least two holding players in the centre of the park and throttled AFC!

Currently we do not have one proper holding player on the books and haven’t since big Victor left

He was the key ingredient in Lenny’s most succesful period along with Ledley they gave the team a proper presence there – which could be supplemented by Ki or Mulgrew

At present SB and SJ have to do the work of three or four !

The problem is compounded by RD insistence on playing his wide players on the wrong side

This simply slows our forward progression even more as they cut inside almost inevitably in to more congestion!

Yesterday we hardly put a ball in to the box until after we took off our one striker with a bit of physical presence! We then proceeded to put in loads towards a forward line composed or lightweights!

The desperation of flinging our CB and our GK up for attacks at the death against Hamilton

Would have been funny if not so tragic!

These things tell me that RD is well out of his depth. We don’t have six years for him to learn his trade!

We should cut our losses and get in a proper professional manager who has the relevant experience- unfortunately we probably won’t until things have gone from bad to worse!

    HH

  16. Very trying day at work with Huns ( how ironic) and others delighted in our result yesterday .

    We need to remain calm.

    Stay cool.

We cannot create this pressure on RD.

Must win game against Hertz. If not sack him.

Must win game against St Mirren. If not sack him.

    Win both and Euro tie.

    Loose to Accies, sack him.

Stick by our mhan and we will improve .We will win the treble this season.

If yesterday had been another day we would have won 7-1.

Just a bad day at the office.

We won’t have many other days when Guidetti, Stokes, Commons & Griff are so off colour.

  32. O’Neill, Strachan, Le Guen all had a track record in management at a top level

    Unfortunately Deila hasn’t.

He may turn into a great manager and if he does it will almost be a unique achievement for a promising Scandinavian manager to be successful with a British club.

Doesn’t mean it can’t happen just a huge risk taken by the club.

One thing is for the last four seasons Celtic have started slowly remember:

St Johnstone winning 1-0 Victor’s debut

Kilmarnock winning 2-0 at CP for the first time in 60 years

    Inverness winning 1-0

    and Morton last season.
