Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

  1. Never saw any comments from Johansen and Brown after the game but the article suggests they were critical of their teammates. Bit if a shocker if true. We lost the game in central midfield where both these guys were ineffective. They need to take a close look at their own performance before criticising others.

We have a game in hand. If we win that we’re 3rd with 2 teams ahead of us. Both of whom could drop points and we’d be first.

My objection to Billy Davies isn’t that he is a hun (although that is certainly objectionable), or to any of the others like him (including Tony Pulis) ….

the problem with scottish football (and with bringing in a scottish manager) is as Einstien said … madness is doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Over the last 20 years or so, the game has passed Britain by …. its managers and players (even those who have had some degree of success… like MO’N… played much like the top English teams from the 70’s and early 80’s) … but the game has moved on so much since that time, and the game and coaches in Scotland haven’t kept up with the developments…

Because of the huge TV money available to them, England has, to an extend, been able to paper over cracks by bringing in top foreign players and coaches …. In Scotland, the money isn’t available to do that …

The lack of money has made the problem in Scotland more acute … when was the last Scottish team, other than Celtic, to do anything of note in Europe?

Even most of Celtic’s ‘successes’ of late (e.g., the win over Barca) came not by skill so much as desperate every man to the pump, throw your self in front of everything defending … which will steal you the odd point, but isn’t really a viable plan to win a lot of matches….

Too many players (and we saw it at Sevco under PLG) would rather work half a day, and then go to the boozer or the bookies… the continental teams are much more professional, and the players from asia or south america are hungrier, and, from what I can see, work harder and develope their skills more (for many of them, it is the only way out of a life of poverty)…. in short, they are hungrier … Even Gianluca Vialli – who was playing with the top English players at the time – commented on their lack of professionalism … if the top guys are lacking, what about the lower tier players or players in Scotland ?

Scottish football needs a complete overhaul…. from the roots up … this will take time, but is necessary, or else Scottish football will continue to fall further behind… As the only real team with a stake in Europe, Celtic needs to lead the charge, as they have the most to lose and/or win…

For Celtic, in some respects, the problem is more acute … we may buy the best of Scottish players, but as noted above, this comes with some built in limitations…

And, given the poor standard of football, Celtic dont usually have to get out of second gear to win most SPL games, but then are not battle-hardened when they come up against the best UEFA has to offer …

A further problem for Celtic is that, now with Sevco gone, we are exepected to win every game 7-0. This puts tremendous pressure to get results, rather than giving a new manager time to get his team playing proper football….

Celtic is now at a crossroads… the absence of real competition at the moment can afford Celtic a once in a lifetime chance to reboot and start teaching our players how to play football the modern way (with little or no risk, as we will continue to win the league)

I supported RL because I thought he was the sort of progressive European manager we needed to drag us into the modern era …. but, if not him, whoever it is is going to have a lot of work to do … he’ll be fighting to change things within the club and in Scottish football generally ….. this is not going to be easy or quick …

RD might not be the guy for that fight (I thought he was, but I am less sure now ..)….

What I am sure about is that the old way (Billy DAvies et al.) might be a short term fix … win a few more games immediately …. but the old guys and their old ways are not the men to take Celtic forward…at least, not if we want to be able to compete at the top level in Europe once again…

  5. Can any of the Deila supporters on here tell me one thing that they have seen on the park and not that they have heard the manager say that gives cause for optimism…just one example of where we are improving …..JUST ONE…

Celtic should practice hitting crosses, at a headable height, at a volleyable height, along the deck, into the penalty box area, in front of the goals.

Not overhit, clearing the box, underhit, hitting the first defender or passing outside the 18 yard box.

Ronny Deila as a manager from 2008 year on year progressed with Stromgodset, to eventually winning the league in 2013, he has the ability to do it and it took him 6 years to do it with them, he will do it with Celtic given time and patients.

Great post! Completely agree. My thought would be he would dig us out and, in a short period time get us the league perhaps. A la a Tony Pullis or those other “throwbacks” we could all mention.

I agree that the appointment of RD was a good opportunity and this was the time, the season to do so. Your right, would be great to see RD revolutionise our club and drag it kicking screaming and cheering into the next 20 years!

My worry is how long is enough? End of Oct is probably the right time for a change if one is required.

Then we would have 2 requirements – win the league this season and recruit a manager to take us forward given the limitations you mention.

Chances are we will need a trouble shooter to win us the league this year who may not be the medium /lomg term answer. Thougha short term fix who gets us the league has the perfect opportunity to become the medium, long term answer.

I actually think RD would have been a good No2 and a Good No1 in a few years.

As I said earlier, I just think it isnt looking like its working and I think, and its only my opinion, that RD is a man out of his time. He’s too late to be No2 and he’s too early to be number 1.

weeron – There is only one thing that is important in football: Winning the next game.

    Agree wholeheartedly.

Winning is ultimately the only metric by which a manager’s success or failure can be judged. Everything else is mere commentary, opinion, and blether.

Up to a point, Lord Copper.

But I remember some guy from our past saying something about “pure, beautiful, inventive football”.

And loads and loads of other guys – on here and elsewhere – bemoaning what they saw as the turgid nature of the (predominantly winning) football we played under WGS and NL.

Ronny Deila’s brief is to pull us out of the footballing backwater and transform us – club and team – into a modern, European outfit.

Whether he is the man to do that I don’t know. But the European teams we have been facing over the years are 20 years ahead of us, and to roll that back will take longer than three months.

And if Deila fails, he fails – but the transformation still needs to happen.

Tony Pulis? Billy Davies? Gawd love us – why not add Barry Fry and the restless shade of Jock Wallace to the list?
