Derek McInnes gave Neil Lennon anticlimactic end to first tenure

181

If Neil Lennon carries the scars of defeats around with him, Saturday’s game against Aberdeen will have some significance.  The last trophy Neil lost as Celtic manager was at the hands of Aberdeen.

Then Derek McInnes was in the Aberdeen job a year and that season saw his team with the League Cup, their first trophy in 19 years, and qualify for Europe for the first time in five years.  Anthony Stokes put Celtic ahead in the fifth round tie at Celtic Park, but Aberdeen came back to win 1-2.

That game took place on 8 February with Celtic out of sight in the league.  They won the title in March, at the earliest date in over 80 years, but elimination from the Scottish Cup so prematurely meant the last two months of Neil’s tenure were anticlimactic.  The stadium was flat on match days, giving everyone unwelcome time to ponder, What next?

If we got the better of Aberdeen and extended competitive pressures until the end of the season, different decisions might have been made.

Much has happened since but Derek McInnes still knows what he is doing.  He won at Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden (against Newco) last year, killing that old question about Aberdeen: Can they win in Glasgow?

  1. Glendalystonsils…………..obviously a huge continent to pick from and the players would be attracted by the money they could earn at Celtic in comparison to South America. I think it’s something to do with difficulty in getting work permits although I’m open to correction on this.

Yes , the fans of several clubs were on hand to provide their chairmen with a conscience when said chairman didn’t seem to have one of their own . With a few honourable exceptions such as Turnbull Hutton.

Perhaps there is an obstacle to recruiting directly from the South American leagues , which may not apply to S. American players already playing in other countries . Whatever the reason , isn’t this something we should be badgering the government about in the interests of fairness?

Great Post. I agree that Brendan did take us to a new level in terms of fitness and analytics etc.

However rather than rely on the next manager bringing his knowledge of these key areas I want the club to be structured differently.

It cannot be right that when the 1st team manager leaves that he or she takes the head of fitness and the head of analytics also, because they are part of his team. This is madness.

The club should be structured to ensure that when a head of department (1st team manager, head of fitness, head of analytics etc) leaves, there is not a wholesale loss of top management.

Clearly this structure might cause tension between the manager and other heads of department, but that needs to be managed by someone above.

  5. Guys,

Don’t know if this has been covered ( Apologies if so )

How much did that controversial VAR decision cost PSG. ? Waiting on the first challenge to VAR authenticity, either through football channels or via legal channels.

His uniqueness is to be regretted.

“Despite a particularly nasty backlash, however, the redoubtable Hutton says he would take the same stance if it happened again.

‘There was all this talk about Armageddon and the slow death of Scottish football, but the best thing to come out of that whole episode was the death of the SPL,’ he said.

‘I didn’t need or want that kind of profile. People forget that situation did not come about because of the Rangers financial situation. It was because of the involvement of Eric on that three-man panel.

‘Ally McCoist’s famous “who are these people?” speech kicked off a whole series of events that placed me to the fore. Eric was eventually outed, we had threats to our staff, supposedly viable threats to burn our stadium down.

‘Eventually you think: “To hell with this!” How could I support the rule book being ripped up for Rangers? I came out on the steps of Hampden, had 25 reporters in my face and I told it like it bl**dy well was.

‘But you stick your head above the parapet and suddenly you’re all over the bl**dy internet and it spiralled out of control. I became “Turnbull The Tim”, which I found quite amusing. But pro-Celtic – or anti-Rangers – had nothing to do with me taking the stand I did.”

When I was at Yoony (a long, long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away) my then Girlfriend and I rented a basement flat in Dowanhill for a couple of years. We felt a bit safer there, than our previous gaffe in Dennistoun, which actually turned out to be a condemned tenement building in Cumbernauld Road.

However that feeling changed when we were burgled in the West End flat. Nothing of real monetary value was taken (mainly because we didn’t actually have anything of monetary value) but the place had been ransacked and a few items of sentimental value (records*, jewellery) had been taken. The damage of such an event goes far beyond missing (replaceable) items though. I never felt secure there again after the event. There is also an intangible distress suffered because someone had been rummaging through your stuff. We gave up the lease soon after.

I hope Fraudgers wife and stepdaughter are not too distressed.

    Evening all,

Just popped in to say, there is no crisis at our Club. In my 72nd year I have seen us come through much more intense issues. Hoping you are all well, and I still lurk on a daily basis, can I just wish all of you the very best life can offer you. Onwards to 10 in a row. HH ??????????

  12. Weefrathetim –

Great to see you posting, young man! Don’t be a stranger!

However, whilst I note your use of ‘onwards’ for now let’s just enjoy (and focus on) “Here we go……. 8 (EIGHT) in a row……….” ;-)

    What a fantastic post.

The more I read of your work, the more I can read between the nicknames of certain teams, characters… The more I understand your idiosyncrasies…. Then the more I enjoy your posts.

You brought back so many memories there…

Love the reference to Shunsuke/Artur and Kidd.

    2 questions if I may..

    1) you mention Stevie Clarke (same one?) and Big Brian McGlaughin (spelling? as I can’t remember him..)

Are you thinking we would have won the league and then hades OPM trophy years leading to liquidation might not have happened?

    2) what is hades? I can read between the lines but would love to have the understanding of the name.

Keep on keeping on… Your thoughts and words are precious, as is your history and knowledge.

    1. Yes I do believe that if we had signed Stevie Clarke fae St Mirren and Joe McLaughlin fae Morton, both went tae chelsea, who were NOT chelski at the time, we would have retained the League, we were well aha ed at New Year. That may have curtailed their tainted niar but we widnae have had Big Billy back and our own Centenary Double may not have happened.

  26. Many of the comparator clubs of whom we are envious are having bad nights tonight. Salzburg 3:0 down. Benfica losing in Zagreb. The “no really that good” Valencia beating their Russian oppos and the worst Spanish team ever, Villareal have gubbed Zenit in their own backyard.

We need to start bigging up Slavia Prague and Rennes as the teams doing better than us. Probably best to do this before they have to play the 2nd leg, mind.

  27. Marco Rose linked with us then hammered away in Europe after a defensive calamity. He’ll fit right in.

TT – brilliant to see that you Love Lenny as much as me. Just give him the job. He’ll carry on with all the work the CLUB (not Roland) are doing, yet add character that Roland could never have. Also playing experience. To me it’s a no brainer and I can’t think of any logical reason beyond, the much put about now… “old style football culture” and ‘some recent you tube videos…’ excuses.
