Direction of travel encouraging for Scottish football

759

It’s heartening to see Celtic linked with a raft of players over the weekend and encouraging for many but I’d ignore everything you read about a Celtic target this far out from the transfer window opening.  All an agent needs to do is post a DVD to Lennoxtown to be able to legitimately link his player to Celtic.  The club will also scout up to 100 players a season, enough to keep you busy on the stats sites for hours, but even Ronny doesn’t know who he will be signing at this stage of the season.

After 11 wins in 13 league games Aberdeen’s title challenge inevitably slipped.  They’ve won once since February, coming from behind against Motherwell at Pittodrie, as Celtic, Dundee and Partick Thistle have taken points from them.  We are at the stage of the season when injuries, suspensions and fatigue kick in.  Whereas Celtic were able to add quality to their squad in January, Aberdeen have to work on a tighter budget.  That the gap at the top is only seven points, with Celtic having a game in hand, says a lot for the direction of travel at Aberdeen.

If Ronny gets his treble wish, this season’s title will be a lot tighter than the last treble, won at a canter by Martin O’Neill.  It was a weaker league back then, Aberdeen were rubbish.

Talking about direction of travel, have you been watching the ebay auction for Hospitality for four for a day at this year’s Open Golf Championship at St Andrews?  This is a unique prize and has attracted some incredible support.

The auction is in aid of the Celtic Quick News appeal to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.  Shuttle transport for the five minute journey to and from the golf course as needed, with beer, Gin and Whisky tastings throughout the day with the master distiller.

You also have the chance to create a unique CQN single malt whisky cask worth potentially £5000 for future CQN charities, and you will receive a bottle of this very special single malt whisky to commemorate the great day when it is bottled in several years.

Eden Mill is Scotland’s newest and most innovative distillery and brewery incorporated in February 2012!  Located just 2 miles from the famous Old Course itself it provides a perfect base for hospitality for yourself and 3 friends on a day of your choosing at the forthcoming open golf championship on July 16th to 19th.

But this is so much more than just a day’s hospitality at the home of golf.  Before taking to the course to watch, you will enjoy a breakfast roll or two and discuss your perfect single malt whisky with the master distiller.

Whilst you and your friends are enjoying the golf he will seek to surpass your favourite whisky by using the best barley to create the right wash and recommending the right type of barrels for our very own unique CQN 1/4 cask of single malt.  A cask which will mature and provide over £5000 of future funding for our charities in a few years’ time.

You will return to the distillery by shuttle bus for lunch and an optional beer tasting and then for afternoon tea with a tutored gin and whisky tasting with the owner capping off a memorable, unique and very special day for your group and for CQN.

My thanks to Eden Mill for their incredible support.  You can bid on the auction here.

  1. Good evenin (morning), all my fellow Hoops fans… Loving all the chatter bout the paving stone / brick, and see that with the momentum it’s stirring, this is gonna happen! Fantastic!! (I am of course in). This might sound fantasy or ridiculous, but what if we had something on the shirt, perhaps next to or opposite the crest?? We have so much to be proud of as supporters, – the Kano Foundation, Malawi, our local and international charity contributions… our HISTORY.!

We are the Fans, We are the Club.. it’s OUR HISTORY!! We should be so proud of it. Let shout about it.

On a different tack, does the glib and shameless one not make you sick to the stomach?? If the SFA allow his return, what does that make the game in Scotland? What does that make us?? If it happens, I don’t know if I could never set foot in a football ground in Scotland again, including my beloved Celtic Park.

Still on a different matter.. any over 35’s who still got (or can get into) their Adidas Samba’s? South Lanarkshire’s Eastfield Gym starting a Friday night 5 a side footy night. Might be fun! ahm gonna give it a go.. been 12 years since the Pitz on a Friday… we used to play Bellies v Baldies!! Loved it.

  20. BRT&H @ 19:16,

Thanks for the clarification regarding Dave King at the CoS yesterday. It is always good to get some precision to cut through the guff.

However just a point regarding your reply to neganon…

    BRT&H @ 19:48,

“Correct me if I am wrong but RIFC does not hold a licence from the SFA to run a football club.

It is the holding company is it not.

A subsidiary is the “Football” company and Dave the King of Tax Returns is not a Director of that company!”

Now no doubt that is the case, however the MASH shareholding and Associates who were Directors were concerned with the holding Company. So it was for his influence on RIFC PLC that Mike Ashley was Fined by the SFA.

As Mike Ashley was fined for having influence on an SFA Club, while being involved in another Club, i.e. Newcastle United, surely it follows equally that the fit and proper criteria should likewise be equally valid for the holding Company.

    Just-a-Thot

    Hail Hail

Morning CQN – can you feel the match day experience in the air ?

As daylight breaks over the East end of Glasgow i am heading from cambuslang to London rd this morning. It is gonna be my first day working along from Celtic park while the day builds up to this evenings match . Always love the first sight of our great stadium as I approach it – always feel the buzz – reminisce of going with my dad as a kid and taking my son along when he was a kid too.

Now I can see the stadium every working day I still feel that way .

Interested to see who steps up to lead the midfield in Scott browns absence . I think Stuart isn’t ready to hold that mantle and not sure big Nir is the bhoy either so guessing it’s gonna have to be joe Hansen .

And I hope wee Leigh scores a hat trick tonight then pulls a caramel log out and scoffs it in one on front of the SMSM ;)

    From the Herald:

THE SPFL is set to net a sensational £1million-plus windfall from Rangers as a result of a clause in their regulations over play-off gate money.

The governing body is entitled to 50 per-cent of all ticket revenue from the knockout matches – before costs – and it will bring in a sum beyond their wildest dreams.

Remarkably, Rangers are on course to pay out more than double the prize money of £342,000 they will receive if they finish second and go on to reach the Premiership play-off final.

Assuming the Light Blues take on and beat Hibs in the semi-final and then face either St Mirren, Motherwell or Ross County, two 50,000 Ibrox crowds will bring in well in excess of £2million.

Not only will Rangers have to hand over half of this revenue, they are required to do so within seven days of each match.

However, Rangers will have to wait until August to get the bulk of their entitled prize money – £232,000 of the £342,000 for finishing runners-up.

Regulation C26 states: “A levy of 50% of the monies (gross excluding VAT) received or receivable by the Home Club for all Play-Off Matches played in the Premiership/Championship PlayOff Competition from all admission charges paid and payable to and for the relevant Play-Off Match shall be paid by the Home Club to the Company within seven days of the date on which each Play-Off Match is played.”

The stinging clause will also hammer Hibs who will have to hand over half of their ticket revenue from their involvement in the play-off – and that could be over £200,000.

They had to do the same last year when they lost to Hamilton Accies although the parachute payment of £500,000 eased the pain.

Ironically, chairman Rod Petrie was instrumental in pushing through this clause when the play-off procedure was introduced by the SPFL.

It was revealed last week that Newcastle United are due a payment of £500,000 if Rangers are promoted under the terms of a deal agreed by Derek Llambias, the ousted chief executive and former Magpies managing director, over the loan of five players.

Only Haris Vuckic has played regularly with Remie Streete lasting less than 45 minutes and the other three Kevin Mbabu, Gael Bigirimana and Shane Ferguson are all injured and unlikely to play at all.

So, incredibly, it is going to cost Rangers over £1.2million to get back up to the top flight.

On top of that, the SPFL is still involved in a battle with the Light Blues over the payment of a £250,000 fine imposed on the oldco for breaching EBT regulations.

The governing body claims that former chief executive Graham Wallace agreed liability on behalf of the newco but in a statement last December, Rangers said they were fighting this.

The SPFL then indicated they would withhold prize money from Rangers to cover the payment of this fine but the Ibrox club subsequently appealed to the Scottish FA.

A judicial panel has yet to meet to decide the matter and in the interim the SPFL has continued to make the staggered payments.

From the section Glasgow & West Scotland

This table contains the names of Rangers players, coaches and staff who were beneficiaries of the Murray Group Remuneration Trust, and how much they received through that trust.

It also lists the names of people where the BBC has seen evidence that they received side-letters – a promise to make contributions to their individual sub-trusts.

BBC Scotland asked everyone in the Employee Benefit Trust scheme featured in the documentary about their use of the trust.

None would tell us anything about their EBTs.

The list has now been deleted

There is a chance that Scottish football will play the club/company fandango as suits it’s interpretation of the rules.

UEFA cover the definition in Article 12 where an applicant for a UEFA licence is either

    a) a club is solely responsible for it’s football operation (and a registered member presumably of its national association)

    Or

    b) a company has a contractual relationship to operate a club which is a registered member.

I paraphrase but the definition is designed to cover the two major constructs of

” clubs ” as we know them in Europe.

Our club licencing would do well to echo, indeed it might do already, but Scottish football is slow to follow UEFA licencing principles probably because few clubs would pass muster and some clubs, well one anyway just circumvent.
