Dirty battle between SFA and SPFL

803

The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL.  I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words.  He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.

The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights.  The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position.  This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket.  Good for him.  This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.

The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden.  There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL.  The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.

Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past?  If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail.  It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.

This has become a dirty battle.

Some great fun at Celtic Park last night, it was like the old days, you know, when John Greig was manager at Ibrox.

Remember, Joe Miller, tonight, at Waterstones, Stirling, from 5pm. Signing copies of Caesar and the Assassin, bring your camera.

The 2015 CQN Annual is through design and ready to ship next week. You can pre-order yours now.

I was in the close two along from Andy in Yorkhill St., with the red telephone kiosk outside it, next to Old Dumbarton Road, across from the ‘toffs’ in the red sandstone buildings. Played football in Yorkhill St with diagonally positioned goal posts (street lights). Overnewton St., outside the school was a straight up and down pitch, in the middle of the street with jackets or pullovers put down. Fractured my arm in a street game, on a Fair Friday evening in 1965 and had to get washed and changed before being taken up Dalnair St to the Children’s hospital.

Graduated to the two black ash pitches at the Plantin.

I don’t know why, but Castlemilk never came in to our gig area. But, just thinking back, did Brian Adams not appear there in the 80s? If so, I think I attended the show with my son. May well be mistaken on that, hopefully you can confirm, if correct. :-)))

  21. Sevco debacle at Alloa takes me back to Oldhuns losing at Berwick. I was at Parkhead where we beat Arbroath 4-0.Great cheers went up when the score came through. Their kick off was earlier.

By the Sunday a memorable poem came out.

Just over the border in Berwick one day

The great Glasgow Rangers arrived in array

With a busload of talent and a new coach foreby

To play lowly Berwick in a Scottish cup tie.

Don’t remember the rest, but some great references to the DOB nation and a goal scorer called wee Sammy Reid( passed away recently)

    Also..

    Said Lizzie to Philip

    We’ll make a new law

    That if you beat Rangers

    It’s only a draw !

A great day, believe it was my birthday

A wee bit more on the “SFA Presidents EBT and heavily conflicted past…..

    Campbell Ogilvie Facts

    1. He set up first Rangers venture into questionable tax schemes on 3 Sept 1999 (Discount Option Scheme) for “a valuable Rangers employee” when he subscribed to two £1 share premiums in Montreal Limited at a subscription price of £2 and a share premium of £149,998 in a letter he signed as Secretary/Director.

    2. He attended a meeting as Secretary of Rangers on 16 September to discuss remuneration planning of Rangers employees at which it was confirmed Craig Moore was to be offered beneficial ownership of the Company’s shareholding in Montreal Limited as a constituent part of the remuneration package to Craig Moore.

    3. He knew that Craig Moore was the valued employee at 1 AND from 2 what the Discount Option Scheme consisted of and that it was now part of Rangers employee remuneration planning.

    4. He was employed by Rangers, in various capacities until around September 2005 and was there at the time in March/April 2005 when HMRC had made enquiries about side letters re Flo and De Boer.

    5. He was a beneficiary of a payment of £95,000 from MGMRT (Employee Benefit Trust) but claimed no knowledge of details of it.

    6. He denied any role in drafting player contracts and assumed all contributions to the trust were being made legally and relevant football regulations were being complied with. (In spite of 1 to 3 and implications from 4).

    7. He gave testimony to Lord Nimmo Smith in the enquiry into player registration and non-reporting of EBT side letters.

    8. He did not provide any testimony or clarification to LNS on players named in the Commission List who were in receipt of trust payments with side letters withheld that were paid via the DOS in spite of his knowledge at 1 to 3 and possible knowledge of their illegality stemming from 4 or subsequent public knowledge of the existence of the by then unpaid tax bill resulting from the DOS based Trust.

    9. He became President of The SFA in early June 2011 just before the UEFA Licencing monitoring checkpoint of 30th June 2011 process too place, which is being questioned by Celtic shareholders.

    10. He could not have informed the SPL of 1, 2 and 3 during the Commissioning of LNS because of the SFA decision to act as appellant body (although subsequently providing key influencing testimony during the enquiry and where a possible alternative of The Court Of Arbitration on Sport or an independent Appeal body could have been set up to carry out the Appellant Role.)

    11. He did not correct or comment on LNS’s decision to treat the early DOS Trust and EBT Trusts as continuous in spite of the difference being public knowledge during the time of the enquiry and when LNS ruled, that Rangers had accepted liability for but failed to pay the tax bill which was created as a result of the scheme Campbell Ogilvie was one of the instruments in establishing in Sept 1999. (see 1 to 3)

    12. He did not comment on or correct the LNS decision arising from 11 that said

“Although the payments in this case were not themselves irregular and were not in breach of SPL or SFA Rules, the scale and extent of the proven contraventions of the disclosure rules require a substantial penalty to be imposed;”

(This calls into question Lord Nimmo Smith’s overall ruling which is based on all payments being regular (“not themselves irregular”) when at least three were not regular and so the appropriateness of the penalty imposed and possibly even more of the LNS judgement.)

Another night and another cheer at the expense of Diedco:

And that would most likely have been the outcome if it hadn’t been for an outrageous injury-time equaliser from Nikolay Todorov, putting the scores at 4 each and sending the huns for a collective early bath. Oh how we laughed at how the mighty had fallen – no more would we be subject to their high profile European encounters on the midweek telly as they’d again have to make way for Coronation Street. Such relief.

As we rolled into Celtic Park, smiling from ear to ear and ‘ere to there, we were met with some grim news. There had been no forewarning on the radio on the way to the ground so it was quite a shock when Tiger Tim announced that there would be a minute’s silence before the game got underway. Was it one of the players? Directors? One of the club’s legendary figures? There was no time to speculate as he went on to declare the silence was “in memory of (now known as Sevco) the Huns European Cup campaign, which was declared dead earlier today in Bulgaria.”

And how we laughed! He’d got us hook, line and sinker!! No-one had seen it coming it all. THIS was what a match announcer was all about, getting it right up Them at every available opportunity.

But it was not to be. In a move the Bulgarian Communist Party would have approved of, the Tiger disappeared. Not only did he not return for half-time, he never returned again. At a time when the old Board did nothing right, they’d got it wrong again! Kiljoys could not be added to the ever expanding range of expletives and abusive terms they were being subjected to.
