Dirty battle between SFA and SPFL

803

The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL.  I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words.  He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.

The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights.  The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position.  This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket.  Good for him.  This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.

The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden.  There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL.  The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.

Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past?  If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail.  It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.

This has become a dirty battle.

Some great fun at Celtic Park last night, it was like the old days, you know, when John Greig was manager at Ibrox.

Remember, Joe Miller, tonight, at Waterstones, Stirling, from 5pm. Signing copies of Caesar and the Assassin, bring your camera.

The 2015 CQN Annual is through design and ready to ship next week. You can pre-order yours now.

Your note and Jamegang’s news today made me think of my dad, and how he struggled to give them up before they eventually took him from us (and way too early) …

MY old man was a tough old guy, but he just couldn’t beat the smokes… and if he couldn’t give them up, it must be pretty damned tough. So you have reason to be proud of yourself!

so, do yourself and all of us a favour … stay off the smokes and keep posting.

Thank you for your support. It really is a shame these ECCs could not have been invented earlier. In saying that, my dad never smoked for the last 30 yrs of his life, but Gullet cancer took him. My mum gave it up at the same time and died this year aged 94. Very difficult to work out the stats. My gran, on my dads side, lived till she was 102 and gave up smoking when she was 90, and started back on her 100th to celebrate. Beggars belief. :-))

BBC news report on the huns v Alloa game described Spence (?) who scored the winning goals as a former Raith Rovers player. I’m sure someone on here said he had been on our books at one time. Anyone think maybe the BBC knew that but couldn’t quite bring themselves to spit the words out?

As for Tonev. If he gets cleared, look out for lots of MacInness in the good old impartial SMSM

He was a Celtic player, we signed him from Alloa for a few quid, but he never played for the first team.

Was also a Youth player at the Old club too.

This is a bit bizarre, and nothing to do with football, so be warned.

Monday this week was UAE national day – a holiday where locals engender a kind of Nuremburg style of nationalism. Buildings, cars, people are bedecked with flags, there are traffic jams everywhere and locals practice handbrake turns, donuts + wheelies on the streets.

Anyway, amidst all this chaos, a murder took place. White American female murdered by a ninja in a shopping mall. Turns out the American’s kids are at the same school as my kid, so it takes on an even more surreal nature. Abu Dhabi police released this video that is just completely bizarre.

Brilliant, The Maryland. Supported Joe Cocker and The Grease Band on their promotional tour for the hit, With A Little Help From My Friends. One of the best bands I ever heard, all session musicians. Superb. Thanx for that. Remember Xanadu, supported that band in the Carlisle Drill Hall. Nae googling noo. Thinking back, I’ve had some life. :-)))
