The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL. I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words. He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.
The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights. The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position. This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.
He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket. Good for him. This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.
The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden. There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL. The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.
Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past? If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail. It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.
This has become a dirty battle.

Re Tonev – I would love it if the Celtic support at Motherwell started a round of applause at Motherwell on the 27th minute at the weekend to show support for the player. Celtic believe he is innocent. The boy said he said nothing and no-one heard a thing. No tribunal or court could find a player guilty in those circumstances and the Aberdeen boy has subsequently proved himself to be a hot-head, getting sent off for abusive language in the recent game at Pittodrie.

I hope his team challenge the S.F.A. procedures which are pre-historic. The last time the club challenged them was over the ‘Red Card’ appeal at the time of ‘Dougiegate’ when the S.F.A. folded within days and changed their system. We must do more of this.

This expression is given the following definition: “Payments made by or for Rangers PLC into an employee benefit trust or trusts for the benefit of Players, including the Specified Players, employed by Rangers PLC as Professional Players, Registered and/or to be Registered as Professional Players with the Scottish Premier League and Playing and/or to Play for Rangers FC in the Scottish Premier League and payments made by or for Rangers PLC into a sub-trust or sub-trusts of such trust or trusts of which such Players were beneficiaries, payments by such trust or trusts and/or sub-trust or sub-trusts to such Players and/or for the benefit of such Players and any and all arrangements, agreements and/or undertakings and the like or similar relating to or concerning any of such Players and payments.”
Comment: The above does not limit Trusts to the loan based Employee Benefit Trusts which are the basis of the big tax case under review by the UTT/COS, but covers all payments made via a Trust to benefit players.
