Dirty battle between SFA and SPFL

803

The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL.  I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words.  He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.

The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights.  The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position.  This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket.  Good for him.  This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.

The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden.  There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL.  The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.

Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past?  If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail.  It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.

This has become a dirty battle.

Some great fun at Celtic Park last night, it was like the old days, you know, when John Greig was manager at Ibrox.

Remember, Joe Miller, tonight, at Waterstones, Stirling, from 5pm. Signing copies of Caesar and the Assassin, bring your camera.

The 2015 CQN Annual is through design and ready to ship next week. You can pre-order yours now.

I’d usually email this to you but as you are used to receiving moans and groans from the auld bassas on CQN, I want to thank you for receiving a book above and beyond what I’d ordered.

GGHCeltic winger Aleksandar Tonev must wait to learn if his appeal against a seven-match suspension on a racism charge will be successful.

The 24-year-old Bulgarian was found guilty of abusing Aberdeen’s Shay Logan by a Scottish FA judiciary panel.

An appellate tribunal gathered at Hampden on Thursday evening to hear submissions on the player’s behalf.

Following the adjournment of the meeting, a statement promised a ruling “within the next two weeks”.

Tonev, on loan from Aston Villa, attended the hearing and is free to continue playing until a verdict is reached.

The “excessive misconduct” charge Tonev is disputing is for using “offensive, insulting and abusive language of a racist nature” towards Logan when Aberdeen visited Celtic Park in September.

“We have to be sure about the things that have actually been said,” was the opinion of Celtic manager Ronny Deila just hours before the tribunal met.

“If not, then it’s a very hard penalty to get when we don’t know what is right or wrong. It could be a misunderstanding.”

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes declined to comment on the case during his Thursday media conference.

Celtic have suggested they could involve the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) if they are unhappy with the SFA tribunal’s decision.

When asked earlier this week if Celtic would involve Cas, Deila said: “We’ll see, this is a very serious accusation.

Tonev was found guilty of abusing Logan during a match at Celtic Park on 13 September

“We will have to do everything in our power to get this away from Alex, we believe him.

“It’s been word against word and they are thinking the other guy is telling the truth and Tonev is lying, and for me that’s not how a court should be. For me it should be real proof.

“We don’t believe Aleksandar is a racist.”

Cas is an independent international body with its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, established to settle disputes related to sport.

Tonev made his first start for Celtic since 2 October in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Partick Thistle.

I’m surprised that there has been so little comment in here on the release of the FAC report on the Gallowgate incident. The report identifies the cause as incompetent, aggressive policing and highlights the subsequent police exaggeration in trying to justify their actions. Only two convictions from an action that involved over 150 police, accompanied by helicopters, dogs and horses. Both convictions involved people responding to being kettled and threatened with batons. What a waste of taxpayers money.

  22. A light insanity/Kit

Bear with me for a while. But I disagree that ‘nothing’ or ‘little’ has changed.

There has been a vast shift in the axis of power in football beginning with Heysal which was the first domino leading to Murray decanting to Glasgow after failing at Ayr with Ally McCleod stating that he (DM) wuld only get his foot in the door over his (AM’s) body.

Without going into this too much at the moment – I need to get ready for tonight – instead of going down a route where Scottish football developed or even created its own unique character and lived within its means, we chased a gadarene rush to swim in the pigswill of TV’s desperation to sell dishes.

EPL, MONEY, TV, EPL, MONEY, TV……..clubs hit the barrier of reality that EPL was a mirage, MONEY dried up, and TV couldn’t give a monkeys other than to keep the whole unsightly mess bubbling with puss until they can once again join in ill begotten and short sighted union the brothers Grimm of Celtic PLC and You know who.

We are not only worse of administratively, financially and ethically, but the promise of having a voice via an independent internet presence has been chopped and chiselled at.

Who visits here for NEWS now. There is none.

Where is the influence of KDS or Keep the Faith.

Culturally and commercially it is clear to me at least, that this once unique site has decided to go for the nostalgia pound and survive by feeding us with tales of yore but treating with kid gloves anything that may adversely impact that ‘new’ raison d’etre.

Where is the real vision for a constructive future to be found? The mantra of EPL, MONEY, and TV still resounds loud and clear here.

I say these things with regret, but it is along time since I enjoyed a real exchange of hope and ambition for the future of Celtic and Scottish Football.

Many will not agree, many will not give a toss about Scottish Football,

In both cases that is a prerogative justly held. But I do care for Scottish football and I also think that what was once a seminal outlet for considered constructive criticism of where club and game is and where club and game goes, has become a……well I’m not sure what it has become.

There is a way forward for both club and the game in Scotland. But it will not emerge from the primordial sludge that we have slunk back into without us shedding many of the petty and divisive armours that prevent the most important people in the game – the fans- working together to reinvent itself.

It is a unique venture Sport in general, and football specifically. It is tribal, gutteral, emotive, and at times psychologically damaging (trust me I know about that bit). But it’s uniqueness lies in the fact that we don’t just shift allegiances; we need competition; we need entertainment. Not for today. Not for next year or the next decade, but for as far as the eye can see. If we lose that……and much of football has already sloughed any pretence at the centrality of competition, then the game is finished.

    Rollerball here we come.

Are there answers. Oh yes there are always answers. But what started as a quick note has taken on the proportions of a full rant….and I really do need to get changed for tonight.

Take care everyone and sorry for letting my fingers run riot on the keyboard.

    Hail Hail

    Estadio

  23. Stairheedrammy,

I agreed, but am not surprised.

But to be fair, I think those who would be most vocal in their concerns about these issues here are actually involved in doing something about it.

This leaves CQN open to a blanket of posts from people who think their fellow Celtic supporters are being manipulated by a left wing agenda which threatens their personal wealth, or to unintelligent 50+ year old men who think that their old age justifies their selfish politics.

It’s a difficult one indeed when we have to tolerate such attitudes, but tolerate them we must as we are open to all. (It’s always worth reminding them of this).
