Dirty battle between SFA and SPFL

803

The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL.  I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words.  He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.

The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights.  The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position.  This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket.  Good for him.  This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.

The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden.  There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL.  The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.

Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past?  If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail.  It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.

This has become a dirty battle.

Some great fun at Celtic Park last night, it was like the old days, you know, when John Greig was manager at Ibrox.

Remember, Joe Miller, tonight, at Waterstones, Stirling, from 5pm. Signing copies of Caesar and the Assassin, bring your camera.

The 2015 CQN Annual is through design and ready to ship next week. You can pre-order yours now.

They are not and never have been fit for purpose. How do we change that? I see no way of “disbanding” them – they are answerable only to themselves. Literally. The only way to bring about change is to get inside that organisation and change it from within.

Absolutely no other way!! The clubs have to vote for change, the clubs need to modernise the rules, the clubs need to revolutionise the SFA and offer fans transparency and fairness, until i see that happening i wont be visiting an away ground or Hampdump

A wise move from a wise fellow-ask me for clarification early!

    Have you started packing yet?

  3. Whilst I’m very wary of tis Celtic board, I’m bearing in mind Lenny’s recent comments that his main reason for moving south was indeed concern for his family.

It makes me think that safety is indeed one of the reasons for the board’s hesitation to fight our battles in public.

Given the SFA used one of the rags on Monday to stir things up regarding Tonev’s appeal, it seems to me that they are aware of this, and use it to their advantage – not surprising what depths they will sink to.

It’s a dirty game here indeed, but the SFA are clearly relying on the MSM to protect them. I suspect they will be the source of Operation Condemn Celtic over the past few years. Reminds me of Daryll Broadhoof speaking at the OBA hearing to Christine Grahame in support of it.

Either way, the Celtic board have played the silent game too long, yet worse, seem to have colluded in setting up the act and pursuing it with rozzer scotia.

Time for them to be more vocal I’d say. I hope they aren’t waiting for Sevco and corrupt mibbery to increase ticket sales, as they know we will pull together as a support when we are under fire, or as the MSM call it, suffering from victimhood.

  4. Hearts are starting to get on my nerves. The self proclaimed saviours of Scottish football. A club that cheated their way to Scottish cup success a couple of times. They spent money they didn;t have. They then managed to secure a CVA to bump off the creditors. They battled for their club and that is commendable BUT they are now trying to educate everyone else about what is right and wrong. Hold on a minute Fartz.

Tynecastle is the most intimiating ground in Scotland. It’s a tight wee stadium with the fans close to the pitch. They get in players faces. Outside the ground is much the same and they are in your face. I used to travel a lot to Tynecastle via public transport from Livingston. It was always a lottery going home with the Bhoys especially if we had colours on. My mate got spat directly in the face once at Tynecastle by a Hearts supporter. This was about 10 years ago. He battered the guy to the ground got huckled and luckily the decent jambo’s in the vicinity said what had happened and the police let him go. he was walking to meet his Hearts supporting girlfriend after the match. I know a lot of jambos. Some are very decent guys. Some are as bitter as Huns. Their forum is a hot bed of Celtic hatred. I don;t mind rivalry but in the last decade it has slowly been cranked up in the Hearts support. In the recent derby draw at Easter Road I believe Hearts supporters broke almost 100 seats. When Motherwell played at Hamilton this season it was the same. Hearts owner Ms Budge needs to be commended for what she is trying to do on the one hand but what she has done is open a huge can of worms. Her supporters need to be whiter than white. They are not. Anytime Hearts lose to Hibs at least 1 Hearts fan will be on the pitch. They have a tendency to always get on there when things don’t go their way. John Wilson was the last high profile one. He was apparently a guy who was out of his head at the time and didn;t even really realise what he was doing but the seed was there. His hatred built up and the atmosphere as poisonous as it always is these days spurred him into action.

Ms Budge has possibly started something that she may regret. I’m sure there are the usual internet bampots compiling a list of all Hearts misdemeaners to send to her as I type.

I sat in the Hearts end once. I was 16/17. I sat in the main stand centre. I sat around old men with lether gloves on and rugs on their knees. I applauded both teams out and watched the match. I had no colours on. I was busted by my accent. I was abused and called a bead rattling fenian by an old man who looked like a minister. I was backed up by a Hearts supporter about my age now who told the steward I had done nothing wrong and shook my hand at the end of the match. Celtic won 2-1 and Cadette scored a cracker. I wouldn;t do it again I was tempted on Sunday though.

    RE; new justice minister.

Having seen Kenny MacAskill at close hand, I’m glad he has gone. IMO he was unhinged, and many politicians I’m sure shared the same opinion. Strangely, he stood up to the CIA, FBI, president of the USA etc by releasing Al- Megrahi on compassionate grounds, almost unheard off in the recent history of the west.

    …………………………………………………………..

CM I think you give MacAskill too much credit. He didn’t so much stand up to CIA as get an embarrassing problem off his hands. Namely Megrahi dying in jail waiting for his SCCRB appeal hearing which had been stalled as it looked like overturning the conviction.

His grovelling speech on Megrahi’s release when he invoked the heavenly judge was played out to the Bible Belt as opposed to his constituents in the Central Belt.

He sure was a shit Justice Minister but we live with his OB Act as legacy.

  6. Livibhoy @10:27,

Agree that HFC are becoming irritating with their new found, self-appointed “good guy” status.

I noticed many of their supporters ejaculating at the news that “Heart of Midlothian is the first football club from Scotland to be invited to the prestigious Christmas Truce International Tournament in Ypres.”

A more respectable approach to the loss of lives in the Great War would be for them to review their songbook.

  7. Great racing again today with Nicky Henderson getting good ground, Paul Nicholls in usual Saturday form and Mullins’ jockey Paul Townend over at Chepstow riding for Rebecca Curtis. I expect at least two winners from each quarter. Just need to decide which ones. Late night last night, late selection today to follow.
