Dirty battle between SFA and SPFL

803

The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL.  I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words.  He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.

The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights.  The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position.  This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket.  Good for him.  This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.

The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden.  There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL.  The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.

Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past?  If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail.  It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.

This has become a dirty battle.

Some great fun at Celtic Park last night, it was like the old days, you know, when John Greig was manager at Ibrox.

Remember, Joe Miller, tonight, at Waterstones, Stirling, from 5pm. Signing copies of Caesar and the Assassin, bring your camera.

    The Tonev Case .

Man A claims that Man B used racist language to insult him.

    Man B claims -No I didnt .

A Kangaroo Court is convened ——–a decision to hide behind the Civil Law is made and the decision is made that ” on the balance of probabilities” Man B did use racist language to insult Man A . . There is no evidence , evidence is not required -The Kangaroo Court simply decides to believe Man A in preference to Man B .

Kangaroo Court punishes Man B .

Man B appeals to The Kangaroo Court . . That Appeal is heard and The Kangaroo Court decides it needs more time to make a decision ..

    Why ? Why ? Why ? .

    ##############################

How long did it take to find him guilty?

Three persons find Tonev guilty, who were they and what is their expertise? they came to a decision in a few hours.

Three persons, is it the same persons? hear an appeal, who are they and what is their expertise? they can’t come to a decision in a few hours, but Tonev was previously found guilty in such a period.

So now the boy has to wait two weeks for a decision.

It’s obvious that the three panel members cannot reach a decision, have postponed it to seek further advice or direction from somewhere.

That in my opinion is not a three person panel. Scottish Football would give MI5 a run for their money. Like the five way agreement and this farce of an appeal panel national security is at risk at their disclosure…!

  6. Good morning CQNers,

The increase in the number of Celtic staff being subjected to verbal and physical violence must be of concern to the club.

Considering there is still over 8 weeks for the msm and others to ratchet up the hype before the cup game with Sevco (if they can survive that long) it has to be a concern where those consumed with a hatred of everything Celtic might next turn their attentions.

Am I the only one that thinks Tonev and Celtic are being mucked about ? Would this happen to any other club ? I doubt it. It is time Celtic took a stand on the many issues that are being used against them. H.H.

Strangely, he stood up to the CIA, FBI, president of the USA etc by releasing Al- Megrahi on compassionate grounds, almost unheard off in the recent history of the west.

  15. There is a donkey stable in Shameden. In that stable in Shameden there’s a donkey stable door labelled ‘Not Guilty’; there’s a donkey stable door labelled ‘Guilty’; there’s a donkey stable door labelled ‘Not Proven’. And there are three donkeys with a simple decision to make. Each door has a wee ‘looking glass’ cut into it so the donkeys can see what awaits them on the other side of indecision.

Behind the ‘Not Guilty’ door swirls a thin mist of parochial dissent and a few waging fingers and a couple of shaking heads.

Behind the ‘Guilty’ door an angry and raging inferno of wrath, demonic suits waving accusatory writs whilst laughing atop a daunting mountain of legal fees.

Behind the ‘Not Proven’ door a siren of languid carrots beguile.

If you were one of those three donkeys… which door would you wish to pass through?

Since I’m not one of those donkeys’ I selfishly hope they all chose the second one because I’ve heard it can get hot in hell.

But for the sake of peace and goodwill to all, I should really plump for the third door in the donkey stable in Shameden.

Nah feck it, pick the second one, don’t be a stupid donkey, pick the second one, pick the second one; because you don’t have the basic honest integrity to pick the first and you’ve all grown fat on imorality too, so no more carrots for you.

  27. Ann Budge quite right to condemn supporter behaviour, says Robbie Neilson

    Donald Cowey

    Friday 5 December 2014

ROBBIE NEILSON has backed Ann Budge’s scathing criticism of Celtic and Hearts supporters after revealing the Tynecastle club are looking to the United States in a bid to revolutionise the match-day experience.

ROBBIE NEILSON has backed Ann Budge’s scathing criticism of Celtic and Hearts supporters after revealing the Tynecastle club are looking to the United States in a bid to revolutionise the match-day experience.

Budge, the Hearts owner, pulled no punches in her assessment of the behaviour of both sets of fans in last Sunday’s Scottish Cup clash, describing vandalism in the away end as “appalling” and citing the destruction of almost 100 seats. She also noted “disgraceful” graffiti and “intimidation” of Hearts fans and staff as the atmosphere turned sour in Gorgie. The home supporters were not spared Budge’s wrath, with the self-made millionaire confirming that one Hearts supporter has been banned for life, having been ejected for sectarian singing.

Her statement, which was published on Wednesday evening, drew immediate criticism from the Celtic striker Anthony Stokes, while the Glasgow club issued a swift response.

However, Neilson, the Hearts head coach, has no doubt that the Hearts supremo was right to criticise the supports.

Neilson said: “I think Ann [Budge] has put out a good, strongly-worded statement. We are trying to run the club in the right way, on the pitch and off it.

“Ann is very intelligent in what she does and she wants this club to go in the right direction. Yes, it has to be an intense environment – but not hostile or aggressive.

“Twenty per cent of fans at the game were kids and they are the future of the club. We have to create an environment where families enjoy coming to the game, spend money and then come back next week.

“We are under no illusions: there are a small minority of fans who go to games and act irresponsibly, but the vast majority of fans are well behaved and it’s up to the individual clubs to eradicate any problems they have within the club.”

The greatest dismay in Budge’s statement was reserved for the reports of parents having to remove “terrified” children from the stadium. Neilson says that is something Hearts never want to see again, with the current hierarchy desperate to create a family atmosphere inside the stadium. He believes Major League Soccer, which has seen tremendous growth since its inception in 1996, provides plenty of inspiration.

Neilson continued: “I think she [Budge] is seeing things from a new perspective. You look at the game over in America with the MLS, where it is all family-orientated. We want it to be like that here.

“You don’t want to lose the passion and the intensity, but you can’t have the other side of it – where people don’t want to come to the games for fear of what will happen.

“In America they target the female of the house, who will take the whole family along to the game. They had 1500 when they first started, now there are teams getting 50,000 every week. It will take time her, but there needs to be a start.”

The powder-keg atmosphere at Tynecastle last weekend was ignited when Hearts midfielder Morgaro Gomis was shown a red card for a reckless tackle on Scott Brown after nine minutes, ensuring he is suspended for tomorrow afternoon’s visit of Queen of the South. Referee Willie Collum then awarded Celtic a contentious penalty in the second half after John Guidetti plunged to the turf under no contact from Brad McKay, the Hearts defender.

Neilson has expressed his disappointment that John Fleming, head of referees, has not returned his phone call after he requested an explanation for Collum’s display in the capital. He added: “I spoke to John [Fleming] on Sunday night and I was hoping to hear back from him or the referee but I have still not heard anything.

“We go along to these coaches and referee meetings and they always talk about how we need to build relationships. Well, I don’t know about you, but I find the best way to have a relationship with someone is to talk to them.

“Even if we are not happy with what is said, at least there has been dialogue and there is some sort of relationship being built. If there is no conversation then that makes things difficult in the future.”

My view on Tonev appeal. Original decision will be upheld, there is no new evidence to change the outcome. The 2 week delay is to allow the SFA to consider what options are open to Celtic and/or Tonev to take the matter further. I think the CAS route is a red herring as there terms of reference do not give them jurisdiction in this matter.

  30. Tonev – just the latest example of SFA feckwittery. They are not and never have been fit for purpose. How do we change that? I see no way of “disbanding” them – they are answerable only to themselves. Literally. The only way to bring about change is to get inside that organisation and change it from within. It needs to be professionalised.

  32. John Mason laughable risible nonsense

A SNP MSP has said he believes fans wearing “Yes” badges at football matches should be susceptible to police action.

John Mason, MSP for Glasgow Shettleston, made the comments during a meeting with football fans at Holyrood on Thursday.

Mr Mason joined other MSPs including Labour’s Jackie Baillie and Michael McMahon at the meeting with supporters’ group Fans Against Criminalisation (FAC), which opposes the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act.

The SNP politician was asked to respond to an incident at Tynecastle stadium before Sunday’s Hearts vs Celtic match.

It was put to Mr Mason that a fan wearing a t-shirt with “Free Palestine” across it was questioned by police.

He said: “I think that guy probably knew he shouldn’t be wearing that inside a football stadium.

“We should all know by now expressing political views is no longer acceptable at football matches.”

Mr Mason was then asked whether, for example, a Scotland fan at a match found wearing a “Yes” badge in support of independence should also be susceptible to police action. The MSP replied: “Yes.”

When asked to comment on the SNP banners at various football grounds around Scotland, Mr Mason said this was something he would “have to look into.”

Jeanette Findlay, of FAC, said: “Mr Mason’s remarks, revealing his view that the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act outlaws any form of political expression anywhere near a football ground, is very disturbing coming as it does come from a member of the governing party.

“This view has clearly been adopted by the police as evidenced by their behaviour on the Gallowgate in March last year.”

A SNP spokesman said: “The Offensive Behaviour Act is designed to ensure that football fans are able to enjoy going to support their team without being subject to the offensive behaviour of a small minority.

“While we are committed to reviewing the legislation after two years, figures show that the strong action taken is delivering results.

“People are of course free to express legitimate political views – and the legislation is quite clear that it is aimed at tackling offensive and threatening behaviour.”
