Dirty battle between SFA and SPFL

803

The SFA put on a show yesterday, providing boxing and snooker promoter, Barry Hearn, with a stage to take aim at the SPFL.  I would urge caution when digesting Hearn’s words.  He took aim at some easy sounding targets, for example, the league not having a sponsor, but the league don’t have a sponsor by choice.

The alternative choice would be to sell the rights for a value considerably less than the old SPL’s rights.  The league took the view that they would rather maintain their asking price, and go to market when the league is in a more competitive position.  This may, or may not, be a wise decision, we don’t know, and neither does Barry Hearn.

He also talked about making money by selling fights between low-quality but committed boxers at £150 per ticket.  Good for him.  This kind of sport, and his auditorium-filled darts, may well have a bright future, but it’s not the direction Scottish football should be heading.

The backdrop to all of this is what’s going on at Hampden.  There is a power-struggle between the SFA and the SPFL.  The latter are more likely to deliver radical change, the former want to maintain control, privilege and the bowling committee-type structure which has lasted for over a century.

Can you imagine how inadequate the SFA would appear if the SPFL held a similar forum, with an invited guest there to poke fun at the SFA president’s EBT and “heavily conflicted” past?  If the Association are trying to clip the league’s wings I suspect they will fail.  It’s more likely the SPFL will redouble their efforts to bring structural reform to our game.

This has become a dirty battle.

Some great fun at Celtic Park last night, it was like the old days, you know, when John Greig was manager at Ibrox.

Remember, Joe Miller, tonight, at Waterstones, Stirling, from 5pm. Signing copies of Caesar and the Assassin, bring your camera.

The 2015 CQN Annual is through design and ready to ship next week. You can pre-order yours now.

The Not Proven verdict is a construct used exclusively in Scottish Criminal Law

If the SFA panel are employing the “beyond reasonable doubt” …then it is reasonable to have NP as an option

The RD standard requires corroborated evidence to be available

In Tonev’s case the standard of proof used was ” balance of probabilities “.., the standard of proof used in civil law where there is no requirement for corroboration and the standard of proof much less onerous ….there is no place in such a set up for the NP verdict

The fact that Boyd was found NP exercised me as it seemed the SFA panel were applying such standards as the wished to achieve a desired result

NP verdicts are usually returned when an individual is suspected of committing the offence …there is some doubt …but the accused is not deserving of a not guilty verdict ….I could talk to you for hours on this topic

Suffice to say where a decision is on balance of probabilities there is no place for a NP verdict

Spot on mate . Scottish football has been allowed to become a toxic brand , and won’t recover until people who have a real feeling for the welfare of the game in scotland take control , and rid the game of these people who have made a mockery of the sport . It is unbelievable how the people currently at the helm at Hamden , have been allowed to remain in situ . And will fall even further unless they are stopped and removed . I had high hopes the likes of turnbull Hutton was going to start the ball rolling , but our game needs people who will govern without fear or favour , surely there are people out there who can deliver .

  4. Delighted to announce that the final total from my Movember campaign was £845. Equally delighted to tell you that just over £300 of that came from the fantastic bloggers on this wonderful site. Thanks to everyone for their support particularly when I’m very aware of the other multitude of great causes that are out there.

Totally agree, congrats to Janette Findlay and the FAC committee for hours of top class investigative journalism, they have produced a factual accurate account which has shamed Police Scotland to its core, Police Scotland in conjunction with many Sevco fan groups were the catalyst for the OB legislation demanding the evening up process, to the SNP’S great shame they jumped on a political populist bandwagon following on from the MSM, TIME to repeal following this report

Would like to echo the comments on John Mason MSP in the report………………….a buffon

FFM- I do find it difficult to accommodate the ideas put forward by the factions you mention as something I would expect from fellow Celtic supporters, but I suppose that we are a broad church and need to accept that some of us see the targeting of tims as justified.

  7. Anyone hear how the tribunal judged on the Dundee United player who Rangers wanted money for?

I.e. Dundee Utd were quite happy to pay for the 2 years he was nurtured by the New Club but not for paying money to the New Club for his tenure under the Old Club.

  8. Stairheedrammy,

HH to you, I can respect what you say while not agreeing.

I think the main issue that we shoul be defending is freedom of speech for our young supporters – where we think they are wrong (offensive), we tell them in the stands.

The key issue here is that that they shouldn’t be arrested for perceived offence by any plod in a uniform, or worse, arrested in error on the hearsay of one said plod.

To all the Bhoys out on the skite in the BV today, hope you have a grand day.

I’m trying so hard not to be jealous but failing miserably!

  12. BMCUW,

Re the BV, of course, you are jesting with a wry smile and wink as you walk into a pub in Sw that serves good guiness at 9am for under £2 a pint……..

But I’d ask how much do they charge for a game of pool in this establishment?!? I’d take a trip down there to do a bit of a hustle, but there’s no money to be made from punters who won’t pay more than £2 for a good pint of guiness, and won’t bet on their last game as they know they need to run for a train shortly – this is not the ideal formula for a pool hustle, Paul Newman would run a mile :))

  13. FFM:

I agree, I think Hearn’s speech highlighted more than a few glaring ‘inconvenient’ truths and everybody in that room whose nose wasn’t out of joint was a tungsten Pinocchio, diamond cutting woodies.

    Pfayr:

I appreciate you taking the time to translate law into layman’s terms and after reading it I appreciate the discriminatory application of the distinction; it leaves me to conclude that bigotry defines the SFA ethics, just my honest opinion of course. I hope to have a talk, in person, next year.

    Jimtim:

The only people who can break the toxic mold that is the SFA hierarchy are the people who pay to perpetuate it. The sponsors have seen the light and ran away leaving only the poor football supporter to maintain the life of the corrupted. Again, just my honest opinion.

A wee section from Scotsman article

“Perhaps most damning of all is that the result and performance served up at the Indodrill Stadium could have come at any juncture since the liquidation of the old Rangers in 2012 forced a reincarnated version to start again at the lowest tier of the senior game.”

    Sorry if already posted .

  16. BMCUW,

They pay £1 for a game of pool??

I expect you to prepare for my arrival by telling said Anglo-Saxons about my delusions of pool grandeur. Don’t worry that these delusions are real, that’s my problem. :)

Man A claims that Man B used racist language to insult him.

    Man B claims -No I didnt .

A Kangaroo Court is convened ——–a decision to hide behind the Civil Law is made and the decision is made that ” on the balance of probabilities” Man B did use racist language to insult Man A . . There is no evidence , evidence is not required -The Kangaroo Court simply decides to believe Man A in preference to Man B .

Kangaroo Court punishes Man B .

Man B appeals to The Kangaroo Court . . That Appeal is heard and The Kangaroo Court decides it needs more time to make a decision ..

  19. Interesting development re the SFA and SPL nonetheless.

As one crumbles, the other will strengthen.

Either way, I don’t expect Sevco II will suffer enough.

Paul67’s suggestion re the lack of a sponsor would make sense to me if I continued to trust the Celtic board to be doing the right thing.

But now that is in question, I take a step back, and think, how you can possibly justify and reward the failure to get a sponsor for the SPL, when you have Celtic in there, along with other clubs such as Aberdeen and Dundee Utd.

Whatever Herne’s(SP) agenda might have been, he seems to have made several comments that we would all like to slap into any of the beaks at the SFA/ SPL.

Because the court know they haven’t got a leg to stand on, but they’ve now put themselves in the position of calling the complainant a liar.

Instead they should have properly heard the complaint and told the complainant that they cannot punish the alleged offender on the basis of one man’s word against the other and then send both of them on an awareness course.

Well they can say that the complainant (who’s name I can’t recall) must have misheard Tonev, but they had to take the original complaint with the seriousness it deserved. While the punishment will not be applied in this instance it’s indicative of what would be merited in a more concrete case.

Alternatively, when the complaint was made, the Compliance Officer should have said that he will investigating said complaint, and obtaining all available information.

Having done so,he would have been able to state that insufficient evidence was available to sustain a charge-much less a conviction-for such a serious allegation.

Both clubs, and each player, could have been presented with the findings and advised accordingly.
