Dollars and Celtic’s diminishing Australia market

306

Right from the off, Celtic knew there was a chance Newco would pull out of the Sydney Super Cup.  We negotiated a better package, the right to announce the tour and to call it the Ange Homecoming Tour.  Newco were fully occupied with the prospect of a couple of million landing in the bank, knowing nothing about their commercial value, compared to Celtic.

When the league breaks for the World Cup, Ange Postecoglou will head home for the first time in three years.  It is an opportunity for Celtic to garner support in an important foreign market.

Emigration from Scotland to America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand dropped off in recent decades.  As a consequence, a large portion of Celtic supporters in these markets moved there over 30 years ago.  They are older and are not a market that will foster support too far into the future.  Despite having an Australian legend as manager, without some work, our commercial prospects there diminishing.

Competing for eyeballs outside the almighty EPL is difficult, but the Almighty has given us a ladder.  We have a high-profile event taking place in Australia in five months, set to generate future dollars and fans.  We also have a high profile in Japan, a market I see little effort put into, outside of social media.  A 2023 Japanese tour is needed.

Surprised they didn’t also ‘snap up’ Jack Wilshire. Fits the Lundstrum midfield thug model.

I saw a headline about Sevco completing another “box office transfer” 😂😂 I assume this was it.

Not that I know much about that boy but they’ll definitely be weakened by Aribo going.

    Big wavy

I was impressed with clips of Tom Lawrence for Derby last season but as I say it was only clips.

  8. as much as we deserved the title last season and the play was sensational at times – our weaknesses were obvious and exposed against quality.

So far, we have not strengthened the team IMO – the new left back looks good going forward but does he strengthen us defensively ? not at 5’7 he doesn’t

Its about time we signed some physicality in midfield and height and power in the back line – then we can maybe do something in Europe.

Tom Lawrence was a good player a few years ago.

No idea what happened to him. Career stalled.

I assume injury was a factor.

Free transfers, re-signing old guys, selling young guys?

    Go figure.

  11. Stebhoy,

    Size doesn’t matter.

Real Madrid won the big one with a LB standing at 5ft 9in in his stocking soles. A centre half Alaba at the same size and Dani Carvehal at 5ft 6in. Their giant CH Militao is 6ft 1in (the size of both Starfelt and CCV).

A falsehood that we need big lumps.

  12. For those saying we have not improved the first team, here’s a thought. The four Japanese boys are all likely to be better this coming season having now had a proper break.

Abada and Jota likewise, young players who were not accustomed to playing every week now have the experience to go up another level.

We all know another good CH is needed and maybe a RB if JJ goes and a DM.

Patience. We are going in the right direction.

All the Galacticos you cite are superb fitba players. It is really hard to get the ball off them. Plus, to a man, they are hard as teak. Top teams like Madrid know that if they allow crosses into the box, unpredictable ( and bad ) things can happen, either directly, or from the second ball. This is why they bust a gut to prevent crosses coming in at all.

They also have a very tall keeper who just dominates his box.

From our point of view, we have to play the Undead at least 4 times. Several of their players, including Goldson, Katic and Helander, have all scored crucial winning headers against us, so we might as well get ready for the onslaught.

I’m in the camp of prepare for Europe and the league will take care if itself. We manifestly are not any stronger in key areas which saw us dragged all over the place and lose more goals than any of the other 31 Europa Group Stage teams. This tells us that improvement, and substantial improvement at that, is desperately needed.

Watching teams like Leverkusen and Bodo effortlessly cut through us was not pleasant viewing. The main problems were that none of our midfield players could tackle a fish supper, their spacing without the ball was all over the place, and our average team speed was way below that of the opposition. JJ and Alexandro will be quick enough, Starfelt will not, and we desperately need central midfield protection in front of our center backs. McCarthy is far too slow, and we haven’t seen enough from Hideguchi to decide if he will suffice.

Remember that we were totally inadequate for Europe’s third tier competition, and now we will be among the elite in the top tier. Have we strengthened sufficiently to make a fist of it, and prevent repeated drubbings? In my humble opinion, we have not.

Fella. I could have predicted the size isn’t important with the comeback, they are all great players.

    Arrrggggghhhh

The argument was height and no amount of teak and skill can influence the point you were making about lack of height. Loads of studies on this and flags organisation and single points of height more important than a ‘big’ back four.

We haven’t lost a headed goal since February and have clearly organised better and the sliced through butter from teams last season was poor pressing and tackling and positioning (Abada and Taylor 2 culprits).

I’d like a big leggy CDM with mobility and technique (Bitton +) and see our robustness not being about height per se but organisation and the execution of Ange’s philosophy, something I’m hoping to see go up a level…
