Dollars and Celtic’s diminishing Australia market

306

Right from the off, Celtic knew there was a chance Newco would pull out of the Sydney Super Cup.  We negotiated a better package, the right to announce the tour and to call it the Ange Homecoming Tour.  Newco were fully occupied with the prospect of a couple of million landing in the bank, knowing nothing about their commercial value, compared to Celtic.

When the league breaks for the World Cup, Ange Postecoglou will head home for the first time in three years.  It is an opportunity for Celtic to garner support in an important foreign market.

Emigration from Scotland to America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand dropped off in recent decades.  As a consequence, a large portion of Celtic supporters in these markets moved there over 30 years ago.  They are older and are not a market that will foster support too far into the future.  Despite having an Australian legend as manager, without some work, our commercial prospects there diminishing.

Competing for eyeballs outside the almighty EPL is difficult, but the Almighty has given us a ladder.  We have a high-profile event taking place in Australia in five months, set to generate future dollars and fans.  We also have a high profile in Japan, a market I see little effort put into, outside of social media.  A 2023 Japanese tour is needed.

  1. I use Amazon for various purchases of goods and was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from them this morning, this is an extract from it:

“This is your quarterly AmazonSmile donation notification. Your chosen charity, Celtic FC Foundation, recently received a quarterly donation of £778.28 from AmazonSmile, thanks to customers shopping with AmazonSmile turned ON in the App or at smile.amazon.co.uk

To date, Amazon has donated a total of:

    £9,697.68 to Celtic FC Foundation

    £15,693,285 to all UK charities

    £300,496,168 to all Worldwide charities

Thank you for supporting Celtic FC Foundation at no extra cost to you by shopping at AmazonSmile. You can track your impact throughout the year at the Your AmazonSmile Impact page.

AmazonSmile is also available in the Amazon Shopping App on iOS and Android phones. When you activate AmazonSmile in the app, every eligible purchase will automatically generate a donation for Celtic FC Foundation. See how to activate here.”

Amazon must be utterly amazed at the Celtic Foundation donations through this scheme in comparison to UK donations which to my reckoning is about approx 60% of all UK donations, furthermore, 5% of Worldwide donations have gone there also. Just really emphasises what we are as supporters! por cierto

  2. “to my reckoning is about approx 60%”

Actually, it’s nearly 75% Isn’t it? POR CIERTO

  3. Those nice people at Lush (the cosmetic firm, not Big Jimmy & BRRB’s drinking pals🤣😉) are having a wee charity event for us up at the Fort Shopping Centre this weekend. So it’s off to Glasgow with my Lisbon daughter to put my smiley face on for a few hours this afternoon. ( Their products really are lush, especially their charity pots). There- statuary endorsement applied!

Yesterday i was treated to a belated Fathers Day pressie, tickets to The Tommy Burns Story,in the King`s Theatre

Even though i knew all aspects of the life of one of my all time favourite Celtic players,he was a Celtic supporter.a fellow East End Bhoy, but most importantly what stood out for me was his humanity,he was a good person.

I am not a person of faith, but,Tommy Burns was,and it shone through all that he did in a magnificent career as a player and manager ,but most importantly as a husband, father, and a friend to all,

I only spoke to Tommy a couple of times in passing at Celtic events, but in the show the rendition of Tommy singing Mack the Knife took me back to his performance of that song at a Celtic Convention in Las Vegas in the Riviera Hotel,he brought the house down,I am not ashamed to say i crumbled ,i sobbed uncontrollably like a wean.

This is what it means to be Celtic!!

Don’t fall for the bullshit, and save us the deluded, self congratulatory smugness.

Amazon avoid paying tax on their enormous profits, thus reducing the level of services the state can provide.

But indulge in a bit of PR virtue signalling by having their customers donate token amounts to their chosen charity.

  8. Good morning from a sunny but a bit windy North Staffs

Got this message from Amazon this morning

Celtic foundation getting the majority of UK donations which is fantastic

Looking forward to the game later.

  9. Should have read back – feel suitably chastised.

It’s up to governments to extract the tax from Amazon etc.

  10. Agree that we probably don’t need a defensive midfielder as such. But we do need to learn how to defend as a team and a unit .

That is, midfield and defence need to be tighter ,as at present when we are out of possession against better teams we are far too open and easily played through.

I think we need to add a couple of players to improve the starting 11.

  11. In the meantime if I decide to buy stuff from Amazon and as a result benefit the Celtic foundation then I will.

Of course it helps when you are shown on prime time on BBC 1. Women’s football has come on in leaps and points over the last twenty years or so, and it is fantastic that it is now a sporting direction young girls and women can aspire to. The USA deserves a lot of respect here, especially via their schools and colleges, whereas it has taken time in Scotland and England to overcome the legacy of a total ban from the early 1920’s through to the early 1970s. (In contrast with the organisation, support and encouragement of Welfare/Works football post 1918.) You want historic prejudice and discrimination, look no further than the FA and the SFA. In some ways I wish women’s football had their own independent FAs, especially in Scotland.

No need to worry — I have a spot of power-washing to do.

Yes really some full on /hot power-washing action today.

Not a wind up to generate another bout of moon howling.

Playing nice at the moment — TMcL started it.

Consequently it will be a no show from me.

    For today anyway.

  16. Tried watching the Germany v Denmark ladies’ game last night. I wasn’t impressed. Maybe in part because I can’t really work up any enthusiasm if the Celtic aren’t playing. Would the BBC be broadcasting all the games if England weren’t expected to win the tournament?

Welcome to the new world of right wing / raving mentalist welfare.

As with most new ideas from the neo liberal right wing “radicals” it has a veneer of credibility.

However in practice it is just a case of tax cuts for the corporate sector followed by making the poor dance for support / bobbins.

See UBER for the re-introduction of surge pricing — 110 years after the whole world realised it was a bad idea.

Now the neo libs want to replace the welfare state by giving pennies to charity.

They want collectivism dead and too many believe the hype / the froth / the shiny newness that they put up to convince an apathetic populace that giving pennies every time you shop will cure the ills of the world and deliver a better society.

    Company towns are next.

    Private currencies.

The hype behind women’s football on the BBC is nauseating.

Too many are salivating at the prospect of women’s sport getting all the publicity.

Forgetting that the bigger issue is the lack of publicity / support for traditional women’s sport.

We as a football club should be bigging up women’s football.

The BBC as a supposed inclusive / national broadcaster should have bigger fish to fry.

Celtic midfielder Ismaila Soro is in advanced talks to join FC Arouca, sources have told Football Insider.

The 24-year-old has been left out of the Glasgow giants’ pre-season tour so he can finalise a loan move to the Portugese club.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglu has given the green light to Soro leaving as he does not consider him a key part of his first-team plans for the new season.

  24. By my reckoning we need a left sided centreback and a defensive centre mid as a must. We have a lot of good options everywhere else and a lot of versatility in the squad.

However, if we get the opportunity to add a real quality player then we would be silly to walk by. If we can secure the services of Jordan larsson for free its a no brained. He is not his dad but he is a quality attacking midfielder/ forward, works his arse off and has electric pace. Basically everything ange loves in his player. No way he even considers celtic if not for the emotional pull. Ps think some would be surprised by his qualities and I would expect him to be a key player I.e. 30 plus games a season.

Not showing CQN in a good light — I fear your moral / civil code comes from a particularly badly run bowling club.

But hey ho — I’m sure your thoughts on Amazon will surprise us all.

  28. Funny how the mention of power-washing brings a few personalities out of hibernation.

Even I was surprised by the timing.

  29. Seemingly the egg chasing has had its share of Sky friendly refs this morning.

  30. TLT @ 11.26

I would suggest that your thoughts / attitudes towards women’s sport needs to be reviewed.

At the moment women’s sport gets media coverage if they play a traditionally male sport — discuss for latent misogyny and the continuing influence of a patriarchal society ?

Should keep you busy for a while.

I don’t need as much time as I have thought about the issue — last week / last month / last year.

  31. Women’s football — specifically in England — seems to have a media grid behind it.

Gets more headlines in the Grauniad than the SPL.

And the nugget came out yesterday — crowds are down in the EWPL.

Big issues in play as we all know but an average of less than 2K per game is not great.

I fear that the hype is being pushed well ahead of the reality.

In other news — our Ladies team needs a B team to smooth out the pathway to the first team.

Plus they need a ground to call their own — Crownpoint vs New Helenvale.

No pun intended — I blame the old Glesga Corporation.

THELURKINTIM – like you I wonder about this apparent lack of a DM/enforcer when we have several decent midfielders that can’t get a game. But then I think of how John Lundstram will be allowed to foul at will when we play sevco a minimum of 4 times, and think we definitely need someone with a bit of steel that can stand up to him.

    ………………….

I agree we need a ruthless, hard as hell, DMF player who can also pass a ball accurately. However, some of our players can look after themselves.

When Kyogo was being fouled at will last season, Ange said that Kyogo could look after himself.

In the 1-1 draw with Sevco last season, Kyogo tackled Lundstram from behind, raked his studs down his Achilles’ tendon and then bent over him apologetically wishing him Konichiwa. Lundstram rolled about in agony for five minutes and the tears streamed from his eyes.

I don’t think Lundstram will get a freebie from our players to wreak havoc the way he did with Madden. I pray that a few of them will learn from Kyogo’s example.

Do unto others as they would do unto you ……… but do it first.
