Doors closing across Europe

318

I watched as passageway surfaces were wiped down at Celtic Park ahead of kick-off on Saturday, an early visible sign that a public health alert is on the horizon.  Actions will not stop at a bucket, cloth and a dash of Dettol.

Games are already being played behind closed doors in Italy and France.  Today’s total of confirmed cases in the UK is 285, France surpassed that figure five days ago, it is possible public events will face similar restrictions here within a week.  If Germany and Spain take similar restrictive measures in the next few days, the UK will inevitably follow.

Celtic have one home game between now and when the league resumes after the split on the weekend of 18/19 April, so there will be little commercial impact if games here are played behind closed doors, but there is a crucial Scottish Cup semi-final on 12 April.  We would all rather be there than watching on TV.

The issue is more likely to see complications for our players who travel across Europe and beyond on international duty this month.  France under-21s travel to Liechtenstein in two weeks, which is 160 miles from northern Italy.  We have more than a passing interest in that game.  The principality is served by air from Zurich; it is impossible to tell what travel arrangements will be like in central Europe at that time.

We should also spare a thought for those with the burden of financing community clubs, where survival worries will be very real right now.

Couldn’t agree more, and our government, for once does seem to be taking a sensible approach to it to avoid the sort of panic that can lead to irrational, selfish and anti-social behavior. They are saying that we need to avoid the sort of “fatigue” with the issue that false panics can bring about and mean when we do need to be most vigilant we’re all properly engaged.

We (the UK) were also in the middle of a very uncertain time with our economy before this came along. We need to be mindful that an extended downturn in our economic fortunes could have very serious repercussions for the whole country.

  2. Not wishing to trivialize Covid -19,but the worldwide panic just seems to be just that.

This year in America, official figures for the common old Flu virus are thus,34 to 49 million will catch it.500,000 will be hospitalized, and up to 52,000 will die. This is every year, during Flu season.

    Malaria,will cause 300 million acute cases,with around 500,000 deaths.That again,is every year

Listening to the Scottish news last night,I think the total number of cases was 23,none serious.

Health services will be under tremendous pressure whatever happens but if people follow the advice given and don’t think any time off is a time to socialise then the number of cases will be kept just within a manageable level at any given time.

Its far from guaranteed this will happen though – people in Italy socialising and frantically trying to travel to get out of areas in lockdown etc. and potentially spreading the disease a lot further.

The problem is a lot of people are stupid and just don’t listen. But we knew that already with the number of anti-vaxxers around, who I’d guess won’t be so noticeable when offered a vaccine for the coronavirus next year!

  6. You need to frighten people enough to encourage them to wash their hands more but not frighten them so much that they go bog roll shopping in a transit van with a bucket over their heads.

Another issue I done think has been publicised in the uk, guy I’m working with has daughter who is an intern in London. A patient was misdiagnosed recently and 300 interns were told to self quarantine for 2 weeks, that will have an impact on available medical staff.

  10. Ah the etims rumour….

    How pish-stained was that source.

    GG,

Found it, where should I send it to 😁

Oh and maybe you can tell us more about the medical practices in a country that had doctors for thousands of years compared to the west’s hundred years taking over from barbers crew cuts and amputations.

If you read the links I put up earlier you might be better informed about where it actually emanated from.

Covid 19 is not a type of influenza ,it is a new type of Coronovirus..Given the chance it will turn your lungs into something resembling a mushy honeycomb..

  20. Interesting newspaper piece i came accross recently concerning the current virus which has us all on our guard to quote ‘this kind of virus was, until recently, found only in East Asian bats – and it doesn’t harm them.

The virus is thought to have got to humans via bats sold in Chinese markets for food or traditional medicine or via other species also sold in the markets. Chinese scientists and some foreign colleagues have been warning for years that these bats were a risk.

The first human cases were in December, in people with links to wild life market in the city of Wuhan, many worked there, after an initial attempt to hush up the outbreak’ unquote.
