Doors closing across Europe

318

I watched as passageway surfaces were wiped down at Celtic Park ahead of kick-off on Saturday, an early visible sign that a public health alert is on the horizon.  Actions will not stop at a bucket, cloth and a dash of Dettol.

Games are already being played behind closed doors in Italy and France.  Today’s total of confirmed cases in the UK is 285, France surpassed that figure five days ago, it is possible public events will face similar restrictions here within a week.  If Germany and Spain take similar restrictive measures in the next few days, the UK will inevitably follow.

Celtic have one home game between now and when the league resumes after the split on the weekend of 18/19 April, so there will be little commercial impact if games here are played behind closed doors, but there is a crucial Scottish Cup semi-final on 12 April.  We would all rather be there than watching on TV.

The issue is more likely to see complications for our players who travel across Europe and beyond on international duty this month.  France under-21s travel to Liechtenstein in two weeks, which is 160 miles from northern Italy.  We have more than a passing interest in that game.  The principality is served by air from Zurich; it is impossible to tell what travel arrangements will be like in central Europe at that time.

We should also spare a thought for those with the burden of financing community clubs, where survival worries will be very real right now.

  1. For anyone downplaying the Covid-19 Coronavirus there is one thing I would draw your attention to.

UK has 321 confirmed cases. 5 deaths

    Italy has 9,172 cases . 463 deaths.

Two weeks ago the number of confirmed cases in Italy was in the 300’s.

Some experts say that the virus can survive on surfaces for 72 hrs. If true that means we could observe all precautions regarding hand wash and could have the virus delivered through our letterbox.

At a time like this football is trivial. However I would like us to win Sunday to ensure that if the league is suspended or abandoned in two weeks time that the title is undisputedly ours.

We have the best players, the best management team and the best facilities all due to our financial strength.

Should the season be played out behind closed doors or even abandoned, only Celtic with our cash reserves will be able to withstand the impending Armageddon.

I’m sure it wasn’t foreseen but it is certainly fortuitous.

We don’t as yet know enough about the virus or it’s origins due primarily to the Chinese regime being unwilling to allow CDC and WHO experts into the area at the initial outbreak.

I think, I hope and pray that the knowledge and resources of capitalism will quickly create an effective vaccine.

Although Tedros Gebreyesus (spelling) WHO Director General,is essentially a political administrator, he does have a degree in immunology, so he is probably uniquely positioned to address the Cocid-19 pandemic. I assume we can now call it that.

  15. Wtf….covid 19….is a variation of the common flu which annually takes 2000+lives of those with underlying health problems in the uk….

  16. TLT – good on you.

I am in he same boat as you, but the elderly and infirm should take care as with the yearly flu.

Maybe slightly more so until a vaccination is found.

  21. Regarding the CH article there is no doubting the fact that different viruses can affect different ethnicities in different ways. For example the Epstein-Barr virus which is responsible for glandular fever in Caucasians is responsible for causing cancer in those of Asian ethnicity.

However, if Covid-19 was manufactured to infect those of Asian ethnicity, with a mortality rate averaging 3%, why are Italians dying at a much higher rate, currently the mortality rate in Italy is running about 5-6% which is double the global average of about 1-3%?

    TLT,

You don’t need to be in a bubble, a few simple cautions like washing your hands, resisting the urge to touch your mouth, nose and eyes and avoiding crowds, if in crowd a mask and carry a wee bottle of sanitiser. Oh and don’t kiss infected people.

I’m being told we will be expected to self quarantine here in kuwait soon, so my advice for quarantine is prepare now, start buying in tinned grub and pasta in case there is a quarantine which is likely. Remember none of it will go to waste.

There today I saved CQNers 😁

Italians tend to live long.Country is chokka with people over 80 .More elderly people means more people are vulnerable to Covid 19.-hence the higher than average death rate

  26. Dr Harries (England’s deputy chief medical officer) said cancelling big outdoor events like football matches would not necessarily be a decision supported by science.

“The virus will not survive very long outside,” she said. “Many outdoor events, particularly, are relatively safe.”

  27. I’m trying to keep an open mind on the virus thing.

I must admit last couple of days I am getting a bit more concerned.

Anyhow it’s up to each of us to live our own lives so I will not preach to anyone.

For me apart from wanting to protect my family, there is also a social issue .

The Health Service is constantly under pressure, if this virus becomes the anticipated epidemic I’m not sure how or if it could cope.

So apart from Personal & Family consideration I think there is a social responsibility to heed the warnings and if possible make lifestyle changes to try not to become a statistic adding to the National problem.

  28. I see Leigh is getting a lot of attention from the MSM.
