Dunfermline debacle caution ahead of Motherwell

996

Do you remember the game after the Cluj Champions League debacle last August?  Of course you do, you are still chasing the cold from you bones, it was a League Cup encounter with Dunfermline at Celtic Park, where the Championship club took the game to extra time.  The game, the only domestic cup tie in 34 games we have not won in 90 minutes, was six minutes from going to penalties before James Forrest settled things.

I don’t know what happened in the dressing room between Cluj and Dunfermline but I cannot imagine it is a happier workplace this week.  This is Celtic and everything goes on the line every game.  Let’s not have a repeat of the Dunfermline performance.

I know a few Motherwell fans and they are unanimous in their praise of David Turnbull, their star 21-year-old midfielder who joined Celtic on a reported £3m deal yesterday.  Turnbull originally signed for Celtic in June last year, before failing a medical.  A knee operation, and the best part of a year in recuperation, saw him clinch his dream move yesterday.

The question now for the manager is, how does he shape his midfield?  Therein lies the answer to our season.

Welcome to Celtic, David.

  1. 31003,

    Aye ok

Speculation that it affected there performance and belittle there professional integrity due to money.

Could feyenoord not just have been the better team on the night.

His response to the question when asked the likely score after Willie Waddle said 2-0 Rangers

*hate tae be pedantic but it was davie scheidt who was left staring like a rabbit in the headlights. Don’t think Jock would belittle waddle.

Did Hamilton not beat Rangers at Ibrox last season, the night we drew away to Livi.

I didn’t see how well they defended as I was at the Tony Macaroni , before anyone asks if I’m a Hun .

  4. I believe Feyenoord put out the holders AC Milan in that season 69/70 so it would be strange if Jock underestimated them.

I think you could be on to something there . After all , those were the days when we could lose European ties to teams that were better than us , ‘sigh’ .

*Aye they were, Jock underrated them and we had no Idea van Hanegem was that good or WTT. If Billy hudnae blundered and we had held on tae a replay we would have beaten them. Jock would have changed the side just like he did in the Scottish Cup Final replay the following year with skip tae ma lou for Wispy.

Yes they did but it was after December so it doesn’t count.

  9. You did ,read back at what you said.

You speculated that it couldnt have been good having that mindset throughout the game, how do you know, as any time I’m playing sport I think of nothing else apart from what’s at hand. And with that statement you also questioned how professional they were to let this same mind set affect their performance.

Not looking for an argument, just said why don’t we just give feyenoord credit for beating us, it was a cup final and you can sometime get beat and not because of anything else but the opposition plays better. I would like to keep my heroes as heroes and not look for flaws in there caricature. I would have preferred if in never read the story.

Thanks and let’s not get angry it was never my intention to upset you.

*the same night we won on the toss of the coin in Lisbon, WTT and van Hanegem were the scorers. We all cheered that as we did when the beat Legia in the semis, in fact prior tae the draw for that round we were hoping for the dikepluggers as they were seen as the weakest side left.

  11. I lived in Holland at that time. I was also in Milan. The Dutch all expected Celtic to win; they hadn’t flowered as a footballing nation up to that point. But, as Tontine Tim said, they had the great Wim van Hanegem, who virtually beat A C Milan on his own.

    He looks the part!

    But who is signing him?

The manager or the chief exec?

  13. 31003

I’ll be getting accused of that as well shortly

Neil … play two strikers please

Maybe Klimala and the Griff … if only

  15. Just checked the facts on that EC campaign and the 2nd and 3rd top goal scorers were Ove Kindall and Ruud Geels, joint 5th was the wonderful WvH. We didn’t have any in that group, Leeds had Mick Jones no 1 and Johnny Giles as joint 5th.

The only strikers in that group were Mick Jones and Ove Kindall, we lined up with the Bear and wispy as joint strikers.

I thought some of you on the blog might have thought my info re that game interesting. I never for one moment thought I’d be crucified for it.

I’ll keep other TRUE stories to myself in future.

Going back to that game, as far as I’m concerned, if it was me, I’d go out and try and prove a point. I’d try my best and try and score. (a la TG) but I know, personally I’d be raging. I am not in a position to say what Tommy and Jimmy, or the rest of the team were thinking, but I would think they weren’t happy. Now maybe someone like you can simply blank that out, and fair play to you if you could, but I’d be raging. I’d still be trying my heart out to win that cup, but because I’ve never been in that position I couldn’t say if my rage would have affected my performance or not.

  17. In other words, I’d rather be in a HAPPY mindset going in to a final rather than an angry one. And by what I’ve been told…they weren’t happy

  18. MARKIEBHOY on 29TH AUGUST 2020 9:09 PM

Parkheadcumsalford They had 7 players in the Dutch 1974 squad. They were no slouches.

*That’s fine but that’s 4 years later, by that time Ajax had won it 3 times and were runners up in 69. Unfortunately we had put Dutch football on the map.

I see Bayo scored two goals for Toulouse in today’s game . Craig Levein has contacted the French F A to have them given as own goals.
