Energy in abundance but discipline key

286

If you cast your mind back 50 weeks to the visit of Barcelona to Celtic Park you may remember we took to the field with a so-called skeleton squad.  Captain, Scott Brown, was missing, as was Hooper, Stokes and Izaguirre.  Of those outfield players on the bench, only Paddy McCourt had made a dozen appearances for the club.

We lost Lustig and Samaras to knocks during the game, replaced by Watt and Kayal, respectively (yes, an 18-year-old striker replaced the right back).

The script was written.  We have another enormous challenge ahead tonight but I would rather tackle Ajax than Barcelona.

There will be an abundance of energy from the crowd, and from the Celtic players, but discipline is all important.  Don’t make unforced errors, don’t take unnecessary risks, don’t pull jerseys, and most importantly of all, don’t concede free kicks in dangerous areas.

The team who makes the fewest mistakes will win the game; we don’t need to be desperately creative, just stick to task.

This is our Cup Final, let me at them…

I agree the midfield will be key tonight (stating the obvious) but it’s imperative that we track runners after they’ve made a pass and don’t allow ourselves to be dragged where we don’t need/want to be.

Sadly I don’t share your faith in Balde I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the starting 11.

Don’t think Amido will start. Think he will have a big part to play, coming off the bench late on.

  11. Bobby Murdoch…

The 20yrs younger thing did me little good. I was deployed on the left of midfield to provide cover for the 64 yr old playing behind me. Only my pride prevented me from begging to be substituted whilst he continued to bomb up and down the touchline like a spring-heeled teenager.

I did score our second goal however – a well placed header from a corner, although suggestions that the ball simply hit my face and dropped over the line are not entirely without foundation. :)

I won’t be able to make 9th of November as I’m participating in the little known and much misunderstood sport of tandem spacehopper racing (it’s a long story – the missus has put it down to some sort of premature mid-life crisis), so I won’t be in Bristol that weekend.

I will see what I can do about this weekend however.

  12. Appropriate Liam Henderson scores today on the maestro’s birthday.

Many have likened young Liam’s play to that of Paul.

Lovely young Lhad , great parents.

  13. Have the ole jippy tummy this afternoon. Maybe the ole nerves kicking in but, while it is more painful than the variety that set in when we used to play thon deid team, I would rather have this feeling than that. That was a mixture of anxiety and dread. The dread really had nothing to do with the football but with what we would have to endure from the officials and the rest o the Establishment, whether we won, lost or drew. Then, the nonsense afterwards that we would be faced with, whenever we won…..

Let’s hope every last player gives their all for the Hoops this evening. We can ask for nothing more.

    WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

I’ve got that too but it’s more likely related to the fiery curry, gallon of Guinness and multiple drams in Aberdeen last night.
