Erik ends difficult year with loan move

412

I know we all liked big Erik. He brought instant calm to Ronny Delia’s team when he arrived two years ago today. But, while 2016 started authoritatively for the central defender, it ended with him looking pensive and out of his depth at Ibrox, albeit in a Celtic win.

2017 has been largely forgettable for the player. This season has effectively been a write-off for him, after an injury in the Champions League qualifiers. It would have been better for all if he got a permanent deal elsewhere but at least a loan return to Midtjylland will afford him time to regain his confidence, hopefully leading to a new deal elsewhere in the summer.

I am sure we are still looking at the central defensive space for this month.  There could be more in and out.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT NOW FEATURING TOMMY SHERIDAN

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 30th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Kevin Graham is joined by Scotty Alcroft to interview Scottish pro-independence politician, Tommy Sheridan, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

The other voice you may hear throughout this episode is that of former Celtic striker, Frank McGarvey, who is a friend of Tommy’s, and who was also interviewed separately that day for a future show.

You are sure to enjoy Tommy’s eclectic input, as he discusses everything from Catalan independence to Coolio, with a constant undercurrent of that thing called Celtic.

I found an old Girvan v Cumbernauld programme from 2012 today , how long has Paddy played with them ?

Your Freddie quote reminded me of one of my favourite random quiz questions. The song which knocked Bohemian Rhapsody off the number 1 spot (after loadsaweeks) included the same lyric – what was it? Or something like that… ;-)

By the way, great debate on here this afternoon by some of CQNs real heavyweights (not literally). For what it’s worth, at the start of this season I decided that I’d no longer attend games in the 2 domestic cup competitions. The problem comes when my Bhoy, who is going, asks ‘so can the wife buy your ticket off you then…..’.

    When is a boycott not a boycott…

I know what you mean about going tonto, but my personality is to laugh it off, I knew it had annoyed her, so no point in me sounding off, incidentally the guy beside me put his hand up after that, but she chose to ignore him. He told me later that he was going to say Martin McGuiness as he was a modern day peacemaker, unlike the historical figures who had already been mentioned. That annoyed me more, that she never asked him. Can you imagine the reaction?

I love Robert Nesta Marley too, his Rastafarian beliefs would certainly add another angle.

    This is his second season.

I think he was in USA then, although he did play for them for about six months previously, which may have been around then.

I can’t imagine too many junior fixtures going ahead this weekend.

    MMcG! What a response!

My family upbringing was neutral so I was subjected to the BBC version of Ireland in the 70s. Also remember as a wee young 4th year having broken into the rugby big team as the only 4th year being struck at songs on the bus from school matches where many of the older guys sang songs deriding the recently deceased Bobby Sands…..

I thank God I never ran with the crowd or took the easy option and joined in. I think it made me still more Unrepentant over time as I learned about Scottish and Irish history beyond the confines of school and the MSM.

Attack the Celtic for other club’s crimes and somehow that will work ?

Glad to write, it’s all hot air, just don’t understand why the same tired weary mantra is spewed out again.

Attack the Celtic, boycott the Celtic, seriously why ?

You have a gripe with the cheats get out on the streets organise something anything, persuade someone, or would doing something tangible be JUST too much ?

    Easier to to sow discord.

  9. All problems are solved by Celtic continuing to win win win. Nothing any cretins in this SFA hole can do if we sweep all before us relentlessly.

The Huns will die over and over. The rest will go part-time. Then we win the long game and have legal right to ship out to a bigger, better environment.

    Just win, Celtic.

  10. Sandman

There sure is something to be said for us winning over and over, I would have thought that the sfa would be delighted to get rid of us, they could then indulge their pet team till the cows come home, they would get their CL cash year in year out.

    Make it happen Pedro…….

I think back to the reaction on this blog (and other sites to be fair) when the SFA announced it would not carry out a review of the huns’ cheating. It was all about boycotting everything to do witnthe SFA which included buying tickets for Scottish Cup matches. Even TD stated he wouldn’t go to Scottish Cup matches ffs!!!

Now it’s all too difficult too organise and we should boycott the SFA’s sponsors instead. What an absolute cop-out.

William Hills did not let the old huns away with years of cheating, the SFA did and it is they who should be hit hardest. Boycotting their premier competition, the Scottish Cup, is the only game in town I’m afraid. I agree it’s a decision for individuals to make but just how hard is it to to decide not to pay the people who allow cheats to get away with cheating. If we can’t even do that then I’m afraid the game’s a bogey and the cheats have won.

Enjoy paying to watch your team continue to be cheated. Shame really.

    ==============================

The very fact that there is little appetite to boycott Celtic games in the SC (or other clubs supporters to boycott SC games their teams play in) is why an alternative has been suggested.

Indeed I see others making that very point in response to you. A Bookies Boycott is not ideal I agree but its certainly not a cop out.

A sponsor boycott is an easier ask and has relevance to a core issue that should concern bookmakers, the integrity of the competition they ask punters to bet on. Do Bookies agree there are no coals to rake over? Why? What assurances can they provide?

Success howver would depend on two things:

    1. The full extent of the cheating in our game from 2000 to 2017 (including systemic failure) be realised by as many supporters as possible. There is a clear and damning narrative there just waiting for the SFA to say their piece in the off chance they can deny it.

    2. A boycott having an achievable objective that restores the trust destroyed by Rangers up to 2012 and then the SFA/SPFL thereafter and gets buy in across the full supporter base in Scotland..

One objective of a Bookies Boycott would be reform of Club Licensing. It is an objective that would be hard for the bookies themselves to criticise, especially if the SFA Compliance chap does his job in investigating how the UEFA 2011 Licence was processed and highlights the failings of a self certification system that is not adequately policed.

Such a reform should be attractive to supporters of other clubs other than Celtic. Hence this post on Scottish Football Monitor.

    https://www.sfm.scot/the-elephant-in-the-room/?cid=165908

It will be interesting to see if there is an appetite for a revised club licencing system from those who are more likely to endure the consequences of no change than Celtic supporters.

  12. Delighted to report that I am sorted with excellent tickets for the HIBS game thanks to HebCelt and some others.

Please keep in mind that Clink\O/ is also looking for a couple of tickets.

If Celtic draw with Brechin or Hearts draw with Hibs at the weekend, then Celtic v Hearts will be postponed as Scottish cup replays are scheduled for that midweek.

    ========================

To clarify. The original post by me was from E Tims and it was NOT to boycott Celtic, but the bookies who sponsor the SFA.

My latest post says more to put the debate on a new course and on what needs to be done to create a climate to give the idea legs.

  16. All the best Liam Henderson,on your move to Bari, obliviously your face along with Erik, didn’t fit with Rodgers, but mark my words , letting them 2 go, will come back and bite him, Griffith’s along with Armstrong, will be the next pair to leave,

  17. feckin great, celtic supporters having to debate about getting justice read mit take on things and bmcuw 2 great celts, but why should we be having a debate, they cheated pure and simple, if they get away with this, now lets have a debate is scottish football corrupt to the core, how about a poll like last night iknow where my money would be.hh.

  18. Jimbob

I don’t necessarily agree that it’ll bite as as ES wasn’t might as good as we need. Midfield is awash with players all of a similar level and style. I don’t feel that LH really got enough of a chance to prove his worth.

  19. Big Packy- IMO if the Club had made some clear and concise statements over the period, we wouldn’t be having these types of debates periodically.HH
