Ethics, Fifa, support for Beram

823

Remember when Barcelona were regarded as the model of an ethical football club?    I don’t know if it’s just every time I see Tumbling Neymar that I feel a little less affinity with brand Barca but that image has proven to be a mirage.

The clubs tax affairs, specifically over compensation to Lionel Messi, brought it into more disrepute than could be compensated for by the ethically immaculate (cough) ‘Qatar’ emblazoned across their shirts.  Tax is not just for the wee guys.

Now Fifa (you know you have issues when these guys can get moralistic with you) have banned the club from signing players for the next two transfer windows and a fine of 450k Swiss francs after investigations into the signing of 10 foreign minors over the period 2009-2013.  Their accomplices, the Spanish FA, were fined 500 Swiss francs for their role in the episode.

We’ll see if the Spanish FA have the equivalent of What-school-did-you-go-to Ogilvie in charge, who is able to arbitrarily change which transfer windows the ban applies to, in order to assist the club.

Speaking of Ogilvie, after leaving now-liquidated Rangers he continued his work at Hearts, who administrator Bryan Jackson yesterday admitted were themselves facing liquidation.  Ogilvie had a legal responsibility for Rangers during the period they introduced the ruinous EBT scam, some of which was found to be illegal during the First Tier Tribunal, the remainder of which is currently subject to an Upper Tribunal deliberation.

Indeed, the man, who remains president of the SFA, pocketed a £93k EBT, but he can claim no credit for the liquidation of Hearts, which was brought about by the liquidation of the club’s shareholders and lenders.  If there were two clubs in the whole world you would ask karma to liquidate……….

Before you react to this acknowledged possibility, check, are you a fan, or player and fan?  If you are a fan, feel free to proclaim the situation loudly.  If you are player and fan, stop.  The SFA don’t want you proclaiming an acknowledged possibility, as though you were a fan.  Hearts are going bust, but the only man in football allowed to say this is the Hearts administrator.

I see a bit of push-back against Beram Kayal, which is harsh.  After a very promising start Beram is increasingly out of the picture at Celtic and needs to construct a narrative for himself and potential future employers.  Everything he said was almost certainly true: he was ‘done’ by Lee McCulloch, leaving him with a poor first-hand experience of our game.  Why would he retain a love for a league which is offers him nothing?

The comments about Liverpool and Manchester United showing an interest in him prior to his injury tells you lots about how the game works.  Promising, though he was, he was never in this class, but all clubs watch hundreds of players every year.  I see no reason why his agent would be unable to get Beram scouted by a couple of top English clubs.  This would have been reported to the player, but should not be confused as being a qualified interest.

Apart from the MGMRT ebts which the UTT are considering, Ogilvie introduced the irregular DOS ebts in the Rangers Employee Benefit Trust scheme.

He failed to mention the irregular nature of these ebts to Lord Nimmo Smith when giving testimony at the LNS Commission.

The LNS Commission was unaware of the distinction because Duff & Phelps did not release the documents that would have revealed the irregular nature of the DOS payments to the law firm responsible for the LNS Commission.

The even greater significance of this is not only did Rangers cheat with ebts, they continued to cheat in the same way ( concealing evidence) when a commission tried to establish the truth about ebts, aided and abetted by the silence of Ogilvie.

If that man is in football by the time the season starts I’m finished with the game as a paying supporter unless there is a satisfactory explanation for his silence on all ebts.

The full detail is on The Scottish Football Monitor blog if someone can post a link to it.

  2. The Honest Cover-up on

Maybe my memeory is playing tricks on me but from what I recall Kayal’s form had dipped long before the McCulloch assault.

In his first season he looked a tenacious wee player who was a bit rough round the edges but had plenty of dig. In the last few years however, he has shown next to nothing positive. His goal against Ajax was a freak goal and after the Barca defeat at Parkhead he was posting gameplay pictures of himself alongside Xabi. The sort of behaviour you might expect from a fan who has won a raffle to play in a charity match with his heroes. This for me sums up his Celtic career. Content to appear to have made an impact rather than actually doing the business on the park.

His comments about the lack of technique in the league are a bit rich I think. I agree comletely with his comments about McCulloch but there are a raft of youngsters at Aberdeen and Dundee Utd with a far superior technique than Beram. Liam Henderson looks a much better player. His second touch is a tackle. Twist for me. Would be happy to see him regain his form elsewhere but I think he will find his level back in Israel rather than the Championship.

If elbows went in on Beram with absolutely no intention of doing harm to the player, it will have been a first.

  9. Very interesting visitor at the brewery yesterday with some great tales about corruption in re game and pro rangers bias. A certain Mr Fulston the former Falkirk guy. Clearly no angel himself he certainly painted a picture close to what some on here suggest re esp Peat and some of the other esteemed gents running our game.

Neil and PL had promised him a new deal and as a result of those promises

In due deference to the practises of those running the beautiful game and their major alcoholic beverage sponsor our wee brewery team ae looking to create a beer to be known as ‘Definitely Not’ the official World Cup beer. Key point of difference is it will have character, authenticity, integrity and most of all taste.

  15. All this investigation stuff is going no where, it’s being fought hard and clever and with great gusto, but it will be to no avail in my opinion, but you have to say great effort and well done to the ones at the helm, I mean I was keeping up with it and interested in it, then thems had an investigation into themselves as to what was going on with thems, and then thems came to a conclusion that thems had, and where doing nothing wrong, and thems closed there meeting saying to all, people have to stop making accusations at thems, as none of it is true, because we had meetings after meetings and have found nothing wrong with the way we have conducted, and are conducting our business,……….hey! Ffs, gimmi a break.

  17. Last night’s Libertadores

    ++++++++++++++++++

Real Garcilaso (Per) 0 Defensor Sporting (Urg) 2

I said yesterday that I thought this one could be a draw. By halftime, I was convinced I’d got that spot on. Then two well taken Defensor goals early in the second half changed all that.

Man of the Match (I would say tournament, so far) Giorgian de Arrascaeta was quite in the first half, but shone in the second in this one. This included claiming Defensor’s second after good work with 20yr old, Brasilian forward, Felipe Godoz (who’s also a good candidate for Best of Tournament – so far).

I checked a bit further on Arrascaeta yesterday. Apparently, after Defensor turned down Barca’s offer this season, he signed a 3yr contract with Defensor, but with a clause that he’s free to go to a foreign team at any time.

Now, seems like he MIGHT have signed a pre-Contract deal with Galatasary and go there post World Cup/Libertadores, whichever finishes last for him. If so, that’s a shame as I don’t think he’ll get the same level of week in/week out European exposure if he goes to Turkey (good money though, by all accounts).

This result now means Garcilaso are out and Defensor are all but, mathematically qualified.

  21. No surprise that Super Salary would deny Elbows is a dirty player – the Klan look after their own. Kayal has been a good servant to Celtic, made innumerable vital tackles for us. He’s only considering leaving because we found even better midfielders in Wanyama and now Biton.

  22. Kayal comes over as a wee bit petulant but he is very much entitled, on the evidence, to feel that Elbows deliberately crocked him. Therefore, am I being paranoid when I am suspicious of an article in the same paper headed “Ally McCoist defends Lee McCulloch over Kayal slur”

Wouldn’t an impartial journalist be more inclined to say “Kayal accusations”?

Just another wee thing that is designed to subliminally influence the views of the great Scottish public.
