Europe a sideshow to league duty at Fir Park

1000

A Europa League tie against Rennes on Thursday would normally set midweek pulses racing but when Celtic have such a crucial game ahead in the fight for second place Neil Lennon has a major decision to make, does he rest players for the Motherwell game?

Sunday’s game at Fir Park is set to become one of the most important games of the season for Celtic and I’m sure Neil would prefer a clear midweek to prepare for it, but resting players, with the inherent increased chance of defeat, could further damage fragile morale.

Celtic need a confidence boosting win but they need heads focussed on beating Motherwell even more. The consequences of defeat on Thursday are unpleasant, but the consequences of defeat on Sunday are incalculable.

Aye thats right Dr Joe – he knows nothing about football eh? I guess if you take your lead from the record and the sun thats the conclusion you come up with.

Wrong wrong wrong – and the booing of Fergus – even justifying it now marks you out as an exceptional clown.

Jansen resigned. No one got rid of him.

And while we’re at it, why would anyone want to stand in the Jungle again with p1sh running under their feet?

Is that some sort of fetish?

    Classic photo.

I hope the rumour merchants are embarassed with themeselves and think twice about posting anti Celtic crap.

    Maybe not though.

  9. Dr Jo brought us Lubo Moravcik. I know the main thing in football is results, but there are times when you look back and can’t help but reminisce about the skill he had and the enjoyment we got out of watching him play.

We might not have won the league that year but memories of Lubo will live longer than memories of a championship.

  10. Jo Venglos was quite possibly one of the most knowledgeable (and very articulate with it) football managers I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. One of those types that you’d love to have along at your kid’s Sunday morning games just to hear him pick out everything, not to help out with the team, but simply to hear their thoughts as the game progressed.

  11. Dr Jo gave us 5 – 1 against the Huns, that was something I’ll always be eternally grateful for – and Lubo of course.

You may well think that but it’s not true.

  13. We might not have won the league that year but memories of Lubo will live longer than memories of a championship.

I thought we were more entertaining to watch that year than the previous one too, though perhaps the nerves during the previous season due to the importance of it just made it feel that way.

The green hun is a strange beast.

When we are losing, they boo stating winning is the most important thing.

When we are winning, they boo stating that winning isn’t everything without style.

When we have won with style, they boo for no apparent reason.

As far as I know Jansen did not manage another professional football club after leaving Celtic. Was he still sore at Jock Brown?

  22. The Celtic Wiki The Celtic Wiki has a good discussion about Fergus McCann and Brian Dempsey. The key thing to remember was that Dempsey offered to put in £1 million along with Fergus’s £9.7 million but in fact eventually never put in a penny.

Kevin wants etc is right about him being like the old Celtic. Like the Kelly’s and White he was a chancer who thought that saying you loved Celtic was all that mattered. In the real world Celtic has to be run like a business or it will go under. When it was going under before it was Fergus and only Fergus that put his hand in his pocket and saved our club. Dempsey stood at the back egging him on and then had the cheek to try to share in the glory.

As for those who booed Fergus, Kevin rewrites history by saying that it was a majority. It most certainly was not. I remember this well and around where we were in the N stand upper 402 no one booed and lots of people were trying to pinpoint where the booing was coming from and cursing those who did. That was shameful then but I fear that the same fans exist today. They kiss the badge and advocate spending in a way that would destroy the club. They are ‘false’ friends of Celtic and are best ignored. So I have no more to say to Kevin wants.. and his like.

Dr Jo was the ‘cheap’ option for McCann!

Neil Lennon was the ‘cheap’ option for DD!

No Celtic supporters running the club in either of these situations and, do you know why that is…..

because the Jungle started the chant, “Sack The Board!”

Now, with seats…the fans are scattered and mixed and therefore, the bonding area/Jungle was no more!

Apathy has, in the main been the true atmosphere since, the Jungle was gone!

Yes indeed, Dr Jozef Venglos was man without pedigree or distinction.</b?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jozef_Venglo%C5%A1

Dr. Jozef Vengloš (born 18 February 1936) is a former Czechoslovak football player and coach. He has a Doctorate in Physical Education, as well as specialising in Psychology. He has been selected by FIFA on various occasions to lecture at the FIFA academies throughout the world.

Born in Ružomberok, Czechoslovakia (present-day Slovakia), Venglos played as a midfielder for Slovan Bratislava 1954–1966, and later captained the team, and also played for Czechoslovakia at the B level. After his playing career was prematurely ended by hepatitis, he began his managerial career in Australia, first in club football, before going on to manage the national team. He then returned to Czechoslovakia and coached at club and Under-23 national level.

    [edit]Coaching

In 1973, Venglos was appointed as manager of Slovan Bratislava. During his three years in charge, he twice won the championship. He was also assistant manager of Czechoslovakia from 1973–1978. As assistant to Vaclav Jezek, he helped guide the team to victory in the Euro 1976, beating the Netherlands in the semi-finals and West Germany in the Final.

As manager of Czechoslovakia from 1978 to 1982, Venglos led his side to 3rd place in the 1980 European Championship. He also led them to the 1982 World Cup Finals, where they went out in the first round. He then coached Sporting Lisbon from 1983 to 1984, before coaching in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur FA & Malaysia). In 1988, he was re-appointed to manage Czechoslovakia and took them to the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup.

Following this, he took over Aston Villa, making him the first manager born outside Britain or Ireland to take charge of a top division club in England. He left after one season after they finished just two places above the First Division relegation zone. He then moved to the Turkish league, where he managed Fenerbahçe from 1991 to 1993. He was the first manager of the Slovakian national team from 1993 to 1995, before managing Oman 1996–1997.

Venglos was appointed as Head Coach of Celtic on 17 July 1998. Season 1998–99 saw his Celtic team in some excellent form, but they failed to qualify for the Champions League and lost the League Championship and Scottish Cup to Rangers, who also won the Scottish League Cup, completing the treble. At the end of the season, Venglos left to take up a new position as a European technical adviser and as a scout for Celtic. He is most credited for signing fans' idol Ľubomír Moravčík during his season as manager.

Other successful signings include club legend Johan Mjallby and Australian striker Mark Viduka, and while a trophy evaded Venglos, he is still looked upon fondly by fans for bringing such players to the club. The stand-out of his reign came as his Celtic side inflicted a punishing 5–1 defeat on arch-rivals Rangers in the first half of the season. In the new year of 1999, he also took Celtic to Ibrox where they held their Old Firm rivals to a 2-2 draw on their own soil.[1]

He later managed Japanese team JEF United Ichihara for a season in 2002.
